Does anybody know how many classes one typically takes per semester at UNC? 4? 5? Thanks!

15 hours is average I think, some classes count as 3 hours, some more like sciences with a lab. So 5 or 4.

4 or 5 is pretty standard. A class'll count 3 hours, and if it's a first year language, a science with a lab, or a larger class that has a recitation then you'll have another hour with that. Music classes, groups, ensembles, etc are usually one hour, too. The absolute max is 18 hours, though the advertised max is 17, but for your first semester I really wouldn't recommend taking over 15. It's okay to start out with a light load, you'll thank yourself later.

If you come in with AP credit or other credit you can slack off and take less but you need to be over 12 hours to be considered a full time student for the school purposes and yOUR PARENTS insurance. Othewise you may find yourself OUT of the dorm and no insurance.

I am actually a transfer student, coming in as a junior. I wanted to take 5 but I'm not sure if that will be too many since I don't know what the workload will be like compared to my current school. I'm thinking about doing a double major, so I'm trying to fit a lot of classes into two years...

very nervous about the 5 semester rule!!
