Hey. I'll be a freshman in the fall. About how many classes (on average) do you take a semester? How many hours?

15-ish. That’s 5 3-credit hour classes.

You may also consider taking one extra class, then dropping the one you dont like.

They will go over this THOROUGHLY at CTOPs, they won’t let you out of registration w/o 12 credits but they recommend 15 - 16 so you have wiggle room. If you have 12 credits and you don’t like a class and/or are doing badly in it you won’t be able to drop it.

Is the freshman seminar included in one of those 5 classes?

yes, FYS are included in that number of hours!

I dont think you can take one extra class apart from the 5, usually.
For you to be a full-time student you need to take at least 12 credits (4 classes), but they recommend 15 credits (5 classes). You can take up to 17 credits, that’s the maximum. So if you were to take 17 credits, your sixth class would have to be a 2-credit class, and those are usually labs or something like that I believe.

Personally, I registered for 5 classes, I’m a transfer junior, a new student regardless, so it will be a shock for me as well as for a freshman. So I’m thinking on maybe dropping one of those if it turns out to be complicated in conjunction with the others I DO need to take.

^I think the maximum is actually 18 hours? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought I heard something to that effect at CTOPS.

They said 17 for Freshman fall semester, after that 18 is the max.

oh really? I thought what they said was that when you’re signing up for classes at CTOPS, the max is 17 hours, but once drop/add starts on August 2, the max is raised to 18 hours. I really have no idea now though, I wasn’t worrying much about the maximum number of hours.

A lot of this information is available on the UNC website …

http://www.unc.edu/ugradbulletin/requirements.html#curriculum

Ctops recommends you read the ugradbulletin before you go - although they spend the first morning reviewing a lot of the info. It does make your registration experience a lot easier if you understand the foundation requirements, and what your options are. It is suggested you go through the bulletin, and put classes into your planner on the registration portal so that when you go to register you have some options, without hunting through the entire search engine.
