Off-campus housing for next year, too late?

Hi,

I’m a current freshman and I’ve been thinking about living off-campus next year. I live in a quad on north campus right now and I already have a roommate for next year and we were thinking off either spending another year in the dorms or trying to find something off campus. But I’ve heard I might be too late to find things off campus, but then someone else told me they don’t sign leases until January so I could find something.

I’m not really interested in a house, just an apartment that can comfortably fit 2 guys in it. Price is somewhat of a concern, but as long as it is a little cheaper than the dorms we should be ok (no meal plan fee is going to be nice).

Proximity is also key. Must be very close to campus. Prefer closer to Lane/North Campus/Fisher, but someplace along High would also be nice. Not super picky, but I guess nothing too far by South Campus.

So are we too late? Or at least too late to find something close that won’t break the bank?

Thanks

If you are serious about finding a place, you may want to start calling agencies now- there are a half-dozen or so major ones which own the apartment complexes and houses around campus and rent primarily to students. I rent from Oxford Realty ((614)299-2897), and recommend them, but there are a number of other rental agencies too, including Pella and Buckeye Real Estate.

Call them up, ask what they have available in the areas you’re interested in, and ask how much the rent is. Expect that a lot of places will be no longer available, as you are starting a late, and a lot of agencies have already started signing leases, but you may find what you’re looking for. You should be able to schedule a tour.

Avg. rent on a 2 bedroom should be something like $400-450 per person for a fairy convenient place (15th-Lane, close to High), and maybe $50 less if you are willing to live a few blocks past Lane, or on south. I traded a longer walk for cheaper rent, and I really don’t mind the extra ten minutes to and from class. If proximity is truly key, expect to pay more like $450-500. Utilities usually aren’t included.
