Off campus housing

Is anyone planning on (or do you already have) off campus housing?

Anyone living in NYC year round?

My D is transfering to the city and is looking for long-term year round housing. Anyone having any luck finding a nice place to live that doesn't cost over $1000 a month?

1) 99% of columbia students live on-campus, at least in CC/SEAS (in GS many live off-campus). The sense of community you get, the relationships you make, for living on campus, are a large portion of the value of going to columbia.

2) Just east of columbia in south harlem, rents are pretty good. i'm by the 2/3 on 112th and lenox, and I pay $750. of course, "BUT IT'S HARLEM! WE"RE ALL GONNA DIE!" you scream. And I can tell you firsthand that it's a very safe neighborhood, that a bunch of white girls live in my building, and it's a 5-10 min walk from campus. I wouldn't say the same about most of harlem north of 125th st, but south of 125th and west of Lex, it's not too bad aside from the projects.

I'm in a 4BR/2BA with 3 friends, we have a pretty nice kitchen/living room area, and laundry in the basement. Is it the ideal neighborhood, no, but it's damn good for the price. I'm a block from the express train and two blocks from the park.

note that denz pays 750 with 3 other roomies to split the bill with.

i have to believe it would be cheaper to live on campus during the year and find a sublet for the summer if year round is so important to her

Not to mention the huge social costs of not living in campus housing.

As for summer housing, NYU actually seems to be better for about the same cost--some of the lofts are nicer than anything that I've ever seen at Columbia.
