Off campus living

My daughter's excitement about moving off campus is a little bit contagious - but on the other hand, I've been dreading this moment her whole life :) She had actually decided she wanted to stay on campus in Aron for safety and convenience but after viewing two of the apartments, decided she wouldn't be happy there. So she's starting the process and may have already found a pretty good place through a friend of a friend who is a senior. Any helpful tips from students or parents? We've got most utilities down: Entergy, S&W Board for gas, electricity and water. Trash service - not clear on that one yet. What about cable and internet service? Looks like there are multiple choices. Any wisdom on the whole off campus thing is appreciated.

I was surprised to see that the campus parking fee is almost as high for commuter students as it is for students with on campus housing. That is disappointing and surprised me since we can't even be certain she would have gotten on campus housing if she planned to apply for it. I had hoped upper classmen who lived off campus got a break.

We expect her lease to be from June through May. Is there anything we should keep in mind about provisions in a lease agreement specific to students or the New Orleans area?

how close is her house to campus and how many people are she living with? these are 2 important things to saftey

The place she’s looking at is 4 blocks from campus. One roommate but there is an upstairs that 2 more people live in.

Most leases I have seen and heard about are still 12 month leases. It is just the way it usually is, despite the fact that few students use the place in the summer. Subletting is usually an option, but of course hard to find people that want to rent over the summer.

You might want to look at [Tulane University - index](http://tulane.edu/studentaffairs/offcampus/find/index.cfm). See the links toward the top of the page.

Thanks, helped. I’ve found that site to be a good start.
