I was excited to attend Tulane as a transfer student; however, I think I may have to accept admissions elsewhere because of the housing situation at the university. Not only do they not have dorms available, but I am having issues securing off campus housing close to the university. When I called the housing department they basically told me I was on my own in securing housing. I live all the way in Wisconsin. If I can't find reasonable housing that is safe I will have to attend another university... this is so sad being that I was really excited about Tulane. Everything is perfect about the university except for this housing debacle. My parents basically told me they won't let me attend unless I am able to find safe and secure housing. They already are nervous about New Orleans and now that I'm going to have to be living off campus in a city I know nothing about they are even more worried. I have till July 1st to decide between Tulane, Rice, & Emory... I would really like to attend Tulane, but it's looking like housing is removing Tulane as an option which seems so silly.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? I could really use help.

Things are unusually difficult this year. There are more freshmen than they expected by 130-150, and retention was higher last year (and probably this year) than in past years. All good news on some levels, but it put a strain on housing resources and it doesn’t help you at all. I think they had to get rid of some of the temporary housing units they had gotten from FEMA (I think), and the new dorm won’t be ready until next fall. Again no help to you.

The housing office usually has a few names of property owners they have dealt with often in the past that rent to students. Did they not share these names with you? Please ask them specifically. Also they might have a list of people looking for roommates. I see a great house in the Garden District for 3, available Aug 1. Not as convenient as living closer to campus, but 2 blocks off streetcar and safe area, and it would be a great experience. Anyway, PM me if you want more help.

I’m looking for a student to take my place in a house in the University area. The house is on Willow Street near Tulane. Large house with 6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 floors, 2 kitchens(1 per floor) with a large backyard. The kids living in the house are great guys, all juniors and seniors at Tulane. I am transferring from Tulane to a school closer to home and I am looking for someone who is willing to occupy my spot in the house for one or both semesters (either through December 2010 or through May 2011). The rent is roughly $585 per month and you will have one of the downstairs bedrooms. room is available immediately. Please respond to 845-406-7112 for further information.

Please let me know too if you know of anyone. I sent this post to peppler because I am transferring to Syracuse.

there are a ton of places available on craigslist. i highly recommend you check it out and then look for places uptown or in the garden district, and ask here about the specific block every place is on. you can also go here; [New Orleans Forum - New Orleans - Metairie - Kenner metro area - City-Data Forum](New Orleans Forum - New Orleans - Metairie - Kenner metro area - City-Data Forum) this is a very active forum full of nola residents, and people post there all the time who need moving advice. you could post to ask about an address and you’d get a quick response.
