Off campus pricing

Hello,

I was recently accepted into the Acting program for University of the Arts. I got a great financial aid package but unfortunately I don’t think I can afford On-Campus housing. I was wondering if anyone had any information on off campus housing,

*cost

*availablity

*convienence

*ect

also, if anybody knows any Uarts performance majors who are looking for a roomate next year feel free to point them my way

Thank you very much

ps

excuse the spelling i wrote that in a hurry

One more thing,

how easy is it for acting/MT majors to find/sustain employment while they’re enrolled?

My D is doing work study through Uarts, and so you should contact the Financial Aid office, or contact any of your teachers to see if they have work. She works on crew. It’s not lots of money, but every bit helps. Some students work in different jobs, but you need to get something that provides flexible hours.

As to apartments, you should try to get on the Uarts facebook and advertise your need there as well. My D met all her MT freshman fellow classmates there last year. Also, let the housing people help you out; they may have a bulletin board you can post on.

I wish you good luck. Uarts is located in such a fabulous place, that I am sure you will be able to find something.

There is a lot of housing available in the vicinity of UArts. To beat the costs of dorm housing, as a general rule you will need a couple of room mates to share the costs of rent and utilities. I know of several students who have secured off campus housing within a 10 minute walk to the Terra Building (where freshmen spend most of their time) who by sharing a rental unit are paying as low as $500/month plus utilities for a multi-bedroom apartment or small house. Keep in mind, however, that most leases will be for 12 months; school term leases are hard to find and you pay a premium. While the per month costs for off campus housing may be lower than the dorms, your annual costs may be higher when you take into account the summer months for a 12 month lease. The suggestion that you speak to the office of student life for housing suggestions is a good one.

Just to embellish my prior post a bit:

Take the current cost of dorm housing at $7200 a school year (9 months) and you end up with $800/month. There are plenty of studio apartments in the vicinity of UArts that you can get for between $650 -$800/month. But then you have to add in utilities and the cost of rent for 3 additional months of a 12 month lease. That’s why you need to find a room mate, possibly 2, to benefit from the economies of a larger apartment spread over more bodies to end up doing better than the cost of the dorms.

thanks for all the help

and once again, if anybody knows anyone who’s looking for a roomate next year

point them my way

Have you tried posting on the various UArts Facebook pages? Easy way to hit a lot of students at once.
