Oh definitely, Amherst is well-known all around (so is CalTech, but it's funny, because alot of people have only heard of MIT and not Caltech (but then again, those are just the Average Joes))

I'd go in for Caltech, but it's really your choice. Congrats, though, those are some extremely great schools.

Jedimaster: Whoa, good guess. It's 11 45 here and will be, like, 2 30 am when Columbia finally does e-mail me. I can't decide if I should stay awake or not. I mean, if it's good news, it'll be worth staying up, but if I'm up until then and I get a rejection, I'm gonna be pretty much crying all night. Sigh. AND I have work tomorrow. Basically, anyhow, I doubt I'm getting any sleep tonight.

wait Nickel Xenon, why do you think if I am doing premed I should go to caltech? I always thought it would be kind of the opposite becuase Caltech is toooo science focused and not enough humanities

Well, I guess we'll be with you for the next few hours :)

EDIT: If you want premed, it'd be better to go to Caltech.

Grad schools usually don't put much preference on schools' prestige (Unless it's something like your local local school v. Harvard, etc.) There'll be no real difference between Caltech and Amherst in the long run.

Go to sleep and set an alarm for 2:30 AM. Then check your e-mail. After you check your decision, go back to sleep. ^_^

Because pre-med is very science focused and I figure if you wanted to get a good science background for med school, that's where you should go. Unless you're not sure if that's what you want or not. Persoanlly, I'd major in like Biology, that way I could still change my mind. There's tons you could do with a Bio degree and it seems kind of limited what you could do with a pre-med degree if you changed your mind.

Haha, Redstorm, that's solace to my nervous little brain.

NickelXenon: that'd work in a perfect world. I doubt I'm gonna get any sleep.

Ah, well, maybe there's a good movie on...

Haha, the time just starts ticking really slowly. I've gone through that for Stanford SCEA and the Ivy 'Black Monday', what's another? :)

Of course. If you really want to do pre-med, I might just go to Amherst... or Columbia if I get in. It's two hells harder to get a 4.0 at Caltech than at Amherst... Just my opinion, because if you're aiming at medical/graduate school, a 4.0 (or whatever) at Amherst, Columbia, or Caltech will all bring you to the best medical schools in the nations, and it's a lot easier to get the 4.0 at Amherst.

GPA is relative... but even getting a 3.0 at Caltech is extremely hard.

Andromeda: Can you actually fall asleep? o.O I memorized lots of time zones because I moderate a certain forum, and forum members always look for a time to chat together, so I have to appease everyone by arranging a global chat when as many people as possible can participate. =P

If you have nothing to do, here's a good movie:

crunchyroll - feed your need!...

RedStorm: I hear ya. This is doing oodles for my tolerance levels.

I think I'll alternate between watching The Pallbearer, reading Cosmos - Carl Sagan and posting here.

It's going to be a loooong night.

Jedimaster: wow, that must've been fun. Memorizing time zones, I mean. Well, you're certainly good at it.
There's some job satisfaction for you.

It's true. My friend goes to MIT. He says he works his butt off and makes mediocore grades. He says he misses the good old days when getting a 4.0 didn't mean losing a social life. XD But still, if you can get a good GPA at Caltech, you'd really stand out.

haha thanks guys!!

andromeda where are you from again?

NickelXenon: thanks for the link! It didn't work, though.. what movie was it, anyway?

Tealover: I'm in India. What about you?

From what I've heard... MIT is extremely difficult, but Caltech is even harder. Like... students there stop breathing and are given transplants of solar+hydrogen fuel power cells to keep them going.

It didn't work! D< Go to crunchyroll.com and then click on the tab that says Drama. Click on the letter T and then go to page 3. The movie is called The Beast and the Beauty. Here's a summary:

[quote]
The Beast and the Beauty (Yasuwa minyeo) is a 2005 South Korean romantic-comedy film. It involves voice-actor Dong-gun (Ryu Seung-beom), whose blind girlfriend Hae-ju (Shin Min-a) suddenly receives surgery to regain her eyesight. Having lied to Hae-ju about his appearance, the beastly Dong-gun chooses to undergo extreme measures to change his appearance, while promising Hae-ju that he will return soon. Meanwhile, Hae-ju bumps into the Joon-ha (Kim Kang-woo) - Dong-gun's high school friend whose appearance is how Dong-gun described himself to Hae-ju - and mistakes him for Dong-gun. Hilarity ensues, and Dong-gun finds himself struggling to hold onto the love of the woman he loves.

hahahaha nice comparision jedimaster, ya caltech is insanely hard. core classes include 5 math, 5 physics O.O and a bunch of other bio and chem. I was just rethinking things, becuase even the kids who did average or even below average at Caltech ended up at great places :P and plus I know this guy with I think a 3.0 GPA and he got a amazzzinngg score on the MCAT

oh I am from california haha but I am international, I think that affected my chances at admisson a lot :(

The Ivies are need blind, though, even with internationals, right? I don't think it would affect your chances. I think going to a challenging school like Caltech would really prepare you for med school.

Ditto. Like I said to Nickel Xenon, all my hopes now rely on Harvard and Princeton, which is ironic cause I didn't even apply there.

Oh, if only they'd take Columbia students off and everyone'd go there! THEN we'd have a great chance. PLEASE, GOD, PLEASE!

Ni Xe: Columbia isn't need blind to internationals, they're what they like to call 'need aware'. Which is like, huh.

Beauty and the Beast? Aw. I'm watching The Pallbearer right now. Really old movie. Really stupid.

nope only harvard yale princeton

ya need aware doesn't mean anything, it just shows that if you can pay for everything it is easier to get in than if you need money
