Waitlist results will be "emailed after 5PM", Today!

I just called the admissions office and that is what they said. I did not ask, however, whether they even took anyone off the waitlist or not.

i called, and the guy told me the emails will come out around 6 o’clock…i asked if it meant kids were taken off the waitlist, he said he couldn’t say…idk, to me this sounds like a blanket rejection being sent out to all waitlistees…

i just got the email

and it reads…

Dear bicyclekick,

In my prior correspondence, I promised you more news concerning your candidacy for Columbia University.

We have now heard from all of our admitted students, and the Class of 2013 is full. This leaves us with the regrettable task of releasing the great majority of the candidates on our waitlist so that they may go forward with their plans for the coming year. We are confident that the colleges where you and these other strong applicants will matriculate this fall will be made richer by your academic and personal contributions.

This has been an extraordinary year at Columbia in that both the quality of the applicant pool and the responses to our offers of admission have exceeded our expectations. We recognize and applaud your record of academic and personal achievement and regret that Columbia will not have the benefit of the contributions you could make here. I am confident that you will be successful in college and wish you the best in all your endeavors.

Thank you again for your longstanding interest in Columbia.

Sincerely,

Jessica Marinaccio

yup, exactly like my councilor told me
they didnt use their waitlist

didn’t use it

Dear jenshort7,

In my prior correspondence, I promised you more news concerning your candidacy for Columbia University. As things now stand, we have filled our class and cannot be sure that we will have places to offer any more students.
We have officially released the great majority of our waitlisted candidates, but we are holding on to a small group of students should any additional openings occur. We would like to offer you the opportunity to have a place on this extended waitlist, although I understand that this may serve only to prolong your suspense. Of course, there are no guarantees that there will be any movement, and we must emphasize that the chance that we will be able to offer you a place at Columbia is small, but we are offering you the option of holding on just a little longer. We will continue to keep you up to date on your status through the month of June.

Please let us know by May 22, 2009, if you wish to keep your place on this final and most selective waitlist by replying to this e-mail and using the form below.

We send our best wishes and our thanks for your longstanding interest in Columbia.

Sincerely,

Jessica Marinaccio
Dean of Undergraduate Admissions

This is getting slightly ridiculous. Though I guess I can’t complain…
Anyone else get this email? Does this mean the absolute latest we’ll find out is June 30?

^ did you makes this alternative letter up? There so many ■■■■■■ on here that I do not even know what to believe and what not to believe.

^ no i don’t think she did, in my letter, they said they released the MAJORITY of applicants…implying that they’re keeping a few on the waitlist

She released me. How poetic. Columbia is a she, right?
Best of luck for those on extended waitlists!!! I hope you won’t be released:D

i got let go too. sucks but whatever

honestly, i would rather be released then be on the extended waitlist…waiting is just getting to be too much…

It’s not a ■■■■■, I’m on the extended waitlist too. I’m gonna stay on just to see what happens, but I doubt much will come from it. Vanderbilt here I come!!! :)

Yea, i’m on the extended waitlist as well. I almost wanted to be let go. I don’t know quite what to feel.

The extended waitlist is, in my opinion, in case many of the accepted/attending kids decide not to attend Columbia b/c they got off the waitlists elsewhere. This means that enough kids replied that they were attending (high yield) that they dont actually need to use the waitlist, and the extended waitlist is only a back up incase things change between now and September. Though there will be a little moving around, I dont believe they will use the extended waitlist since I dont think enough people will forgo their deposits and enroll elsewhere, especially since HYPSM rarely use their waitlists. But from the adcom point of view they are playing it safe, in case such a mas exodus does occur. With that said, I could be totally wrong since I didnt even apply to Columbia/get waitlisted/know how they do things. This is just an educated guess from a Penn 2013-er.

That’s crazy that they didn’t even take 1 student off the waitlist…but it sure makes being “released” as they put it sting a lot less…congrats to those who got in originally and to those on the extended waitlist! You undoubtedly deserve it.

Yep I got released too.
Oh well.
Now waiting on Dartmouth…
Congrats to all accepted students and extended waitlistees. I hope you make it!!

I got placed on the extended waitlist :] It says they’ll keep us posted through the month of June, which leads me to believe that if there are any spots they will fill them by July 1st (as they originally said they would if there were to be openings in the waitlist letter, or at least that’s how I interpreted it). I’m just very thankful that they didn’t release me. At least I still have a one in a million shot, you know?

Speaking of which, anyone have any idea how small the extended waitlist is?

And are we allowed/encouraged to send additional info/recs/etc?

I already know one person who got into Princeton off the waitlist and dropped his spot at Fu, so there might be hope for some people yet!

^ columbia’s target class size is about 1200-1300 i believe? If they’ve overenrolled and have like 1400 people who accepted, it doesn’t matter if 1 person switches schools due to getting off the waitlist. IT would take 100+ people dropping off. good luck to all extended people though :D

The target class this year is about ~1100 for CC + ~330 for seas = ~1440 total

How would we possibly know how many have accepted though? Like, how much they could be overenrolled/close to that point?

I’m just curious if they’ve released stats like that yet.
