Offered a Scholarship by Penn

I'm shocked right now. I never thought I'd be offered a scholarship by Penn or any school but I have. The scholarship if for $10,000 for a one-year Master's program. I don't know what I'm going to do now, as I was pretty set on going to the University of Michigan but U of M did not offer me a scholarship. Is there anyway to let Michigan know that Penn offered me one in the hopes that they'll offer me one? This is a good problem to have but I'm just so shocked right now. Anyone have any advice?

Congratulations!

Does the $10,000 scholarship even the field between paying for Penn and paying for UMich – or for living in Philly over Ann Arbor? If you calculate the costs of each program, it might not make a significant difference. If this is true, then the real value of the scholarship is prestige, especially if you plan to continue academically after this degree.

Most master’s programs won’t – can’t – counter another scholarship offers because funds are limited; however, if you would attend Penn otherwise, then you have nothing to lose by trying.

wow thats awesome, congrats mate

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. Yes, the ten grand would level the field between Michigan and Penn since they have about the same tuition rate but living in Philly would be about ten thousand more a year than Ann Arbor. However, Michigan sets you up with a job within the field and Penn doesn’t. Basically, I have a job waiting for me while I’m in school if I go to Ann Arbor but I won’t have one if I go to Penn.

I need to talk to my fiance and see what she thinks about all this as well. Can’t bother her while she’s teaching class.

Since you were already pretty set on going to Michigan, Michigan would set you up with a job while Penn wouldn’t, and you’d end up shelling out about the same amount at either place even considering the $10k scholarship at Penn, I’d say to just go to Michigan. Yes, there is the prestige factor of getting a scholarship, but I’d say Michigan balances that out with its job placement program.

Best of luck with your decision, and congratulations!!

^
I agree with Aceflyer. Congrats on both acceptances and the scholarship. :)

what is the job success for UPENN grads from this program. It may be that if you have a scholarship and do well in the program, the job options also even out. Would you have a greater range of job possibilities from either program?
