An odd situation

I'm a Canadian citizen and today I got a package from MSU in the mail. I was happy to read that I was offered the Tuition Grant Scholarship, a Professorial Assistantship, and Presidential Study Abroad Scholarship.

Without revealing too much over the internet, I'll keep it short and sweet. If I become a MI resident before my freshman year, I was told by an MSU Honors College official that I would be able to convert the Tuition Grant into the STATE scholarship (valued at $2,000).

This is a little disappointing because I was hoping for a little more (after all, the Tuition Grant is valued at ~$18,000 annually when it comes to international tuition). If I do indeed attend MSU and have the Tuition Grant converted to the STATE scholarship, I'll have $4,500 in scholarships for the first two years because the Prof Assist. comes with a $2,500 stipend (which I assume can be used for anything, including books, room and board, etc.), but just $2,000 for my junior and senior years.

So, is there anything else that I could be eligible for if I do become an MI resident before I attend that the official didn't mention/forgot about? What about scholarships for upper level students? Is there any way to somehow snatch 8K more from MSU? (paying 10-11K a year would make MSU very attractive)

Thanks, and of course, I'm thrilled that MSU thinks this highly of me. Currently, I'm still an international and what the school has offered me is worth over $20,000 yearly, so I'm happy but I'm just looking at all possibilities.

You could potentially receive a 2K/year scholarship called the “MSU collegiate scholarship.” My friend (in-state) and I (out-of-state) both received it in June after we were already officially enrolled. But generally there aren’t many scholarships given to in-state students outside of the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship Competition (taking place in the beginning of february). The tuition grant you have equates your tuition to in-state tuition. Getting residency would give you an additional 2K a year…you can’t really complain about that. There are other scholarships you could apply for (departmental/college ones) either as a freshman or upperclassmen when you are attending MSU - the HC also gives awards for students who excel academically/other ways. In terms of getting by after your professorial assistantship ends, there are a ton of on-campus jobs (research positions) that you could apply for that could easily cover the 2500/year you get from a professorial assistantship.
