Officail Rice Tranfer Thread for Fall 2011

Thanks, that’s good to know.
I think my application will otherwise be really strong, so I’m just hoping the GPA won’t be enough to get me rejected…

Hey guys, I think if you have a high college GPA and a persuasive essays, you have a good shot. I transferred with a 4.0 GPA and my SATs and HS record weren’t amazing (my SAT was really weird, perfect score in one area, LOUSY score in another section). Then again, I am convinced that Rice takes the essays VERY SERIOUSLY and judge 50% of the application on that alone, so work on the essays & good luck!

Haha well… that doesn’t make me feel much better considering my low college GPA and good high school record/SATs :P

Out of curiosity, fall2009transfer, if you’re comfortable, would you mind saying where you transferred from? I just want to get a sense of how much one’s current school might play into how one is viewed by Rice in the transfer process.

And that is a good decision. As we advise everyone, go to your school and see how it goes. Do not go in with the sole intent of transferring out. It is great that you enjoy it at UH.

@Boots47: Since I currently attend Stony Brook, If you don’t mind me asking, what were your stats like when you transferred to Rice from Stony Brook? Did you transfer Fall of your Sophomore year as well?

I’m transferring to Rice in fall 2011 (already accepted in 2010 but deferred enrollment to do stuff in South America) My previous school was Bard’s College at Simon’s Rock, an early college. I never got my highschool diploma since I dropped out two years before graduating to go to college (getting my GED later, more as an afterthought)

I got accepted with a GPA of 3.75 and the following SAT I scores:
CR:720 M:660 W:670

The transfer process was a pain though. Both my college and highschool transcripts were… “difficult” for Rice to process. But I guess my endless correspondence with the admissions office paid off, I got accepted both to the school AND for deferral. Can’t wait for the fall!

Just out of curiousity, do you have any idea why your transcripts were difficult to process?

Two different reasons. Both were unique to my situation (and unlikely to effect any of you) but I believe it does reflect on admissions abilities in general to respond to applicant issues.

A) My school recently went through a name change but the CEEB/ACT code stayed the same, so Rice admissions got confused and thought they got a transcript from Bard College (they own simon’s rock, but the schools are very separate) but not from Simon’s Rock (it listed both transcripts online, the latter one unreceived) It was an understandable mistake and they fixed it quickly after I email, but not without sending me a response email that basically blamed me. They told me, just as they made the changes deleting Bard’s College’s information and updating Simon’s Rock as received, that it was I who must have “misread” the website.

b) As for my highschool transcripts, they were posted as unreceived for the longest time. I sent them again figuring they got lost in the mail, but the second time when I checked with my highschool they said that BOTH times when they had sent it, they received a receipt saying Rice had gotten it. The website still had it marked as “not received”. It was approaching the deadline so in a desperate attempt I sent an email saying basically “Are you waiting for my junior/senior year transcripts? Because they don’t exist… that’s why I sent you my GED” My highschool transcripts only cover two years because (as I fully explained in my application) I dropped out after two years to attend Simon’s Rock. The admissions department never replied, but they updated the website the next day.

I’m still a little scorned because they kept acting like all of my problems would be solved if I just checked their magical website, as if I didn’t know it existed. That said, I found that the schools that accepted my transfer applications were the ones that made me jump through the most hoops. Either my efforts helped win them over, or the schools who knew they weren’t going to except me just didn’t bother.

Rice and others handle lots of paperwork and losses/slow updates is common. I am a US citizen who applied from abroad who owns a house in California, had a mailing address in Boston, CA and a current residence out of the country. That somehow managed to confuse everyone.

Cornell managed to lose my application 3 times.

It really comes down to staying on top of your own app. And it looks like you did just that. Congrats on getting into Rice!

I’m applying to several schools including Rice. (UT Austin, Vanderbilt, Tufts, Duke also).
I’m currently a physics major at Ithaca college, applying to major in Civil Engineering. I’m Very familiar with Rice and have strong reasons for wanting to transfer.

Stats:
3.92 GPA (all A’s, A- in physics)
1430/2070 super scored SAT (790 in Math)
good rec letters from two professors, one from that physics class.
not many EC’s: Assisted in research lab with adviser (3-4 hrs/week), Intramural sports team manager/captain (3-6 hrs/week), Radio show (2-4 hrs/week).
High school GPA 3.6
High school EC’s: Varsity Lacrosse (10-14 hrs/week), NHS, Retreat leader, Recycle team (1 hr/week), various clubs without much commitment.
Both non-ranked schools
neither bad nor exceptional at writing essays. probably on the “pretty good” side.
took 16 credits last semester, taking 17 this semester. Most challenging course load possible. taken Calc 3, and taking a 300 level econ course.

APs:
English Language-4
Chem-3
U.S. History-3
U.S. Gov.-3
Micro economics-5
Psych-5
Calc BC-5

Chances?

@transfer1992

I think you have an excellent chance in getting in. Good luck.

Also does anyone know the application deadline? The website only had the deadline for last years application deadline.

nvm… found it!

I am applying to transfer too. I currently attend Texas A&M university, and am a freshman

I applied for rice ED and was deferred then waitlisted and opted not to be on the waitlist.

College GPA: 4.0
SAT: 800 math, 740 CR, 670 writing.
Extra curric: GENTS, chess club, mma, soccer, etc.

I also have a pretty big legacy at rice (both parents, many aunts and uncles)
My high school GPA and class rank are what kept menout, so hopefully i can get in. Good luck everyone!

I am applying as a sophomore transfer and I am only choosing to submit my ACT score to Rice (I feel that my SAT score is not an accurate reflection of my performance) I hope it is not a huge negative factor in my application…

Either will work. It does not matter which one you submit.

Good Luck!

Is the ACT easier? I’m taking the SAT tomorrow and I am pretty worried. I’ve been averaging in the 1700s on the practice tests, which in fact is better than my original of 1520, but its still pretty bad.

Personally, I felt that the ACT is slightly easier, maybe it’s just because of the format. Also, I found the writing section to be much easier. Although the ACT does have a “science” section. Typically, you do not need to know scientific facts, it’s more about interpreting scientific graphs.
Good Luck!

The Rice website states notification of admission decision is May 15th. Does anyone know if the notification is exactly that date or if it can come before the 15th?

From what i’ve heard, in the past years I think you are notified before that date.

I believe that everyone will know by that date. They let people know a little earlier
