I just thought I should post here that UF is now taking requests for appeals. I emailed them and got a quick response that my appeal was valid and I am being sent a packet in the mail.

the appeal packet is not even a packet.
consists of 2 pages: 1. talks about what is an appeal and if you have NEW GROUNDS and how to prepare to have a plan b if it doesnt work(10% of appeals get in)
and
2. Info page where you put your name, ufid, birthday, etc.
you attach to that and thats it.
no big deal.

They actually called it a packet in the email response I got back. Maybe it is different this year. Did you already get one?

I assume with the new information (In my case, I have college credit that wasn't part of the original application) and info sheet we have to include a formal letter the the admissions committee asking for the appeal? I heard this is how it was last year. Also, I believe letters of recommendation are still not allowed, right?

Is that large for NY? Our school has almost 2000 and it's not the biggest around.

My understanding of regular admissions was that you could send a letter of recommendation but the chances of them using it were slim. I'd go for it.

I think he was talking about his Senior class size.

they dont ask for recs. they say they dont really look at them. i drove down there tuesday to pick up appeal info to get ahead. but i got it in the mail today.

Yes, I got my appeal form.
DVM, do you have new grounds for the appeal?

I'm hoping to get my dual enrollment credit considered. It's UF's policy that dual enrollment only counts for admission purposes if it appears on the high school transcript. I go to a private school that won't do this; it is against their own grade reporting policy. I sent the transcript (from FAU) to UF anyway, but was still not considered. (Its status was listed as "unevaluated" on the application status page before the decision came out.) So now, I'm basically going to fight their policy on the grounds that without it a large piece of my academic puzzle is missing. I may also mention that if I was a public school student, it would be counted.

Now that I look back on my application without the FAU transcript, it was a no brainer I was rejected. Without it, I had no college credit courses on my transcript at all; only college prep and honors. Not even a single AP course until this year, with AP Environment.

I understand how with normal circumstances just one college course wouldn't be enough to overturn a decision at UF. But because of my learning disability, I entered high school at the most basic mainstream level possible, coming out of remedial classes. My school has a strong policy about entering honors or AP classes; they require a teacher recommendation from that department to move up a difficulty level. Even holding an A in a class an entire year is often not enough for a recommendation. This has happened to me many times. So really, I needed two of these hard to get recommendations over the span of three years to reach AP Environment this year. In addition, I received recommendations for honors classes in other subjects, but never got the magic second recommendation needed to take an AP course. Though I received good grades throughout high school, this situation impacted my weighted GPA. (My unweighted (non-UF) GPA is a 3.8. My weighted UF GPA is also a 3.8)

Now that I just put you through the torture of reading my life story, here is how it all comes together. With the FAU transcript, I hope to show that I have had the potential to take courses for college credit for some time, but that ability was restricted by my school's policy. Because it was a Junior (A.K.A. 3000 level) honors course, it was supposedly harder than a typical AP course. I received an A in a course of that difficulty though I never took a college credit course before in my life, which I think would be remarkable in front of the admissions committee. In my letter, I would also place special emphasis on my awards, which include being a national finalist in National History Day, placing 3rd in a statewide science competition, and 2nd in my county. Finally, I would quickly mention my ACT test (scored a 32). Combined, these three factors: the FAU transcript (the missing material that allows for appeal), the awards, and the test scores, discredit my weighted GPA--brought down from my lack of AP courses, which was mostly out of my control.

I'm sorry my post is extremely long winded, but it was necessary just to get a basic understanding of my appeal. Now I have to come up with a shorter version of this explanation for my appeal letter...........

Good Luck DVM!..I think after hearing your case UF will admit you...let us know what happens.

About 30 students from my high school (approx 10% of senior class) were accepted at UF. Is this a high ratio? My public school is about 100 miles from Gainesville in rural county.

Doesn't sound that high. Last year, 88 students (about 25%) from my graduating class were accepted. Then again, maybe it's because my school's competitive and offered IB, putting most of them at an advantage. Maybe my school's just above average?

My private school does not offer IB and only 10% got admitted as well. This is very strange considering my school has higher standards to begin with. I think the discrimination against non-IB students is evident.

last year, from my school's class of 2007, about 25/400 students actually enrolled. i'm not sure about how many were admitted though.
my school is a low-ranked public and does not offer IB...

this year i know ~20 kids that got in, just from conversations. all are planning to enroll, but there are probably more i haven't heard from

dvm258- I do hope you are accepted upon appeal. You seem very passionate about UF
