The IB kids near my school (note: my school does not have an IB program) tend to get accepted to schools like UF, then promptly drop out because they can’t handle it. Not everyone, some. I’m also not saying that all IB kids don’t work hard. I’m not in IB, for the record. I just hear news about what I said in my first sentence and the fact that their GPAs are seriously inflated. It wasn’t a bash, I just found it slightly humorous, and I happen to agree from what I’ve witnessed/heard.

That’s all. I’m not saying anything else.

Congrats to everyone who got accepted. :)

Yeah that is true. Most IB kids take pretty much just IB courses, which are counted as 5.0, so they can inflate their GPA like crazy.

Decision: Rejected

Essay (be honest): Excellent, very precise and touching, hit the core I felt (as well as teachers and guidance counselor)

State or Country: New York
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket (low, middle, or high): High
Hooks (URM, first generation college, legacy, etc.): None

General comments (how you feel, any advice for future applicants, etc): Honestly, considering I was out of state, I kind of felt I was a little bit ripped off, especially since I had so many hours as a volunteer, and did something that not a lot of people my age get involved in at a deep level. My school is also known as a notoriously difficult and high-expectation school. I also didn’t have anything shady, like a suspension or criminal record. I was pretty shocked that I was rejected, but it happens I guess. What do you guys think? I also want to congratulate anyone who was accepted, and wish everyone the best of luck in all future endeavors, and best of luck again at UF or wherever you go. You guys earned it, and I just simply couldn’t make the cut.

“Yeah that is true. Most IB kids take pretty much just IB courses, which are counted as 5.0, so they can inflate their GPA like crazy.”

uh, no… more like because it’s required unless you go to a school which has 7 or 8 classes a day, or if your middle school offered Geometry (so you wouldn’t have an IB math course in your senior year). There are kids who do the same with APs, which are easier and yet still count the same. Also, most of the IB kids still take AP classes like AP euro, economics, stats, American history, etc. in place of the few elective they’re offered in 9th and 10th grade (pre-IB).

“The IB kids near my school (note: my school does not have an IB program) tend to get accepted to schools like UF, then promptly drop out because they can’t handle it.”

Really? That’s backwards… IB classes are equivalent (for the most part) to your sophomore year at UF. Literally all of my teachers are UF graduates (as well as the IB coordinator) and they say the same. My god-brother had a 3.7 UW HS GPA in IB, and he just graduated from UF with a 4.0. So… there’s definitely something up with the kids near your school.

Decision: Deferred

Job/Work experience: none
Volunteer/Community service (list your total overall hours, too): Volunteer at a soup kitchen for 6 years
Honors, awards, or recognitions: All State Academic Honors

State or Country: MI
Ethnicity: Caucasian/Asian
Gender: female
Income Bracket (low, middle, or high): high
Hooks (URM, first generation college, legacy, etc.): none

General comments (how you feel, any advice for future applicants, etc): I was surprised that I didn’t get in, but seeing as I was oos, I understand. I still have a chance being deferred though

Decision: Accepted

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.82
SAT (breakdown): – Never took it
ACT: 25
Rank: 23/389 (Top 10%)
Total number of academic classes (use your fingers, lol):
Total number of AP classes: 4
IB student (Yes/No): No. My school doesn’t even have that.
Senior year course load: Pre-Calculus, Spanish III, AP Lit, AP Psychology, AP European History, Govt/Economics (Both were honors)

Volunteer/Community service (list your total overall hours, too): 75+ 4-H Volunteering.
Honors, awards, or recognitions: Academic Letter each year, A Honor-Roll, A/B Honor-Roll
Essay (be honest): I essentially wrote about me being Turkish and American and the diversity I would bring.

State or Country: Lake City, Florida
Ethnicity: Turkish/White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket (low, middle, or high): Very High
Hooks (URM, first generation college, legacy, etc.): First Generation.

General comments (how you feel, any advice for future applicants, etc): I honestly doubted myself since the day I applied. I was CERTAIN that the majority of applicants would get in over me. My ACT score obviously wasn’t that high. Everyone else said they knew I’d get in. That, or they were just being nice. Life lesson learned: don’t doubt yourself!
But oh how great it is to be a GATOR!

Screw the IB bashers. They’re idiots who have no idea what they’re talking about.

<<either way,=“” your=“” comment=“” was=“” unnecessarily=“” rude=“” because=“” ib=“” students=“” work=“” their=“” butts=“” off…=“”>></either>

Not true. Not all IB students work their butts off. Only like half of the IB students I see come close to “working their butts off.” And our school has 95% diploma rate so what do ya know…

And how is my comment rude? It’s the truth. If you’re in IB and you do the work and you don’t BS your way through, UF is a shoe in.

Most IB programs at the schools I have seen aren’t that hard to get into or do well once in.

Dnerd, you said yourself that 1/5 of your school is in the IB program and

“literally every IB kid from my school got accepted last year. I think they just really like IB kids, because their SAT scores and the like suck (as in, they are hundreds of points lower than my own crappy score”

I personally think the program is over-hyped, but Dnerd seems to have a chip on your shoulder, so I’ll just let this go.

The kids who get screwed the most are the ones at small private schools with limited AP’s and can’t inflate their GPA’s with all IB classes.

And yes, IB kids have inflated GPAs. I find it ridiculous that kids have 4.7 weighted GPA’s but can’t break a 1800 on the SAT.

Does anyone know how long it takes for UF to mail the official acceptance letters?

Accepted…

Like a week or two, I think. Don’t look forward to anything fancy in the mail.

“And yes, IB kids have inflated GPAs. I find it ridiculous that kids have 4.7 weighted GPA’s but can’t break a 1800 on the SAT.”

Then you clearly don’t understand the concept of the weighted GPA system. Private school kids are at a disadvantage by choice (either their parents or theirs), so… It’s not inflation. Like I said before, kids who take lots of AP classes (I’ve seen kids with more AP classes than the IB Program even allows) are also at an advantage. Who cares? UF sees your actual grades in those classes…

“I personally think the program is over-hyped”

It’s not, really. IB prepares you for college, but not at all for those tests. But yes, UF and most colleges love IB kids and tend to disregard their test scores.

“And how is my comment rude? It’s the truth. If you’re in IB and you do the work and you don’t BS your way through, UF is a shoe in.”

Because that’s not what your original statement said. It’s still an accomplishment.

Also, it’s “shoo in.” I don’t want to sound like a dick, but it was kinda bothering me… >_>

Decision: Accepted

Country: Panama (International Student)
Ethnicity: Asian.
Gender: Male
Income Bracket (low, middle, or high): Middle
Hooks (URM, first generation college, legacy, etc.): First Generation.

General comments (how you feel, any advice for future applicants, etc): Not really my top choice. I got accepted to Summer B though I applied for Fall. Not sure what’s the difference. I wish I could cede my acceptance to those that really had high hopes for getting in. My best wishes for a great future. Always work hard with your head high.

Thoughts for students applying in the future to UF: Everyone guesses what Florida wants in a new student, all the percentages and advice is a guide but ultimately guesses and people don’t always know what they’re talking about. Take with grain of salt. That said, here’s what I think, as an adult, who tried to figure “best chances” for my son, a Gator wannabe since he was 5yo when I took him to the Swamp: Above UF GPA 4.0 vital, top 10%, in-state, deep involvement in anything, and focus application (one of your hooks) on that involvement. Take the standardize tests early and often till you get in the mid 50% group. You might consider specializing in one of the tests, instead of trying to score well in both. Waste of time. ALSO, because there’s no early admission and concern for yield rates, Florida likely values applications that make no bones about UF being #1 choice. Scream it in app! My son wrote he painted his bedroom walls orange and blue when he was in 7th grade – sounds nuts, but that conveyed the message. Contact your local admissions officer, develop relationship, ask questions, be a real person to them not a number – they MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS to the Deciders!!! Being a legacy, another strong hook – it translates to financial support in gifts, donations, etc., don’t underestimate if your folks are alums. Make it clear in the app! As everyone knows who has visited this site, UF admissions can feel a bit random. My feeling after making this a study for three years, all of these things together add up to “best chance.”

Congrats to the students admitted! To those that didn’t, the world’s a big place, you’ll find another school, new friends and exciting classes to discover your future. Keep the faith.

-short explanation on essays:
** Describe an activity, interest, experience, or achievement in your life (this could be a book, a movie, or an activity or experience at work, home, or school) that has been particularly meaningful for you: I wrote about how I have grown as an individual and how sports have contributed to my personal growth (From being shy and easily discouraged to confident and willing to try new things).
**How has your family history, culture, or environment influenced who you are?: I wrote about my family ethnicity and the morals that have been instilled in me. Also the fact that my family has brought out the best in who I am, and they have also shown me what I don’t want to become.

I hope It was not a mistake only applying to two schools. I appreciate you taking the time to read my information.
