Official: 2011 Ivy League Transfer Applicants

Why on earth would you be considered a weak applicant? What school do you attend?

For college, Case Western Reserve University. If you mean for high school, that was split. I spent half at a private school in New England, and half at a well regarded public in Western Michigan (the only private schools nearby were Christian). The reason I think I come off as a somewhat weaker applicant is that my HS gpa was somewhere around 3.5 (though with as many APs (8) as would fit), and I have a poor SAT score (~1920). I take consolation in the fact though that college numbers and letters of recommendation matter most, as in that department, I am certainly solid. And the upward trend ought to indicate that I can and now do choose to work to a high standard. But the thing is, these schools have far more qualified applicants than spots. So why choose a "risk" like me, when there are potentially more "reliable" choices, who had great high school numbers too?

i am hoping to get into Yale and Cornell

case western is a very respectable university, but colleges put more emphasis on HS grades than on college (if you're applying as a Soph). Future posters let's see some stats eh?

Emory U
GPA: 4.0
High School: 4.3 (Valedictorian)

None of this matters though. The admissions process for an ivy league school is absolutely unpredictable. If admissions was just purely on stats, why wouldn't harvard transfer admissions just take 25-30 yalies? With a 4% acceptance rate, don't get high hopes. Turn it in and forget about it. I think that being a valy won't help me in the least.

My grades are great, but they're not a 4.0. I am NOT a mainstream student by any means, have an interesting history, very unique experiences, etc. Ivy League seems to define "diversity" a bit differently from other schools, however, so I'm not sure if I should apply. I was thinking about applying to Brown (I already applied to Stanford, Berkeley, etc.) as another reach. Should I do it? I've been debating it for several weeks (literally going back and forth every few minutes).

Chances (for everyone) are theoretical at best...but.....it's still nice to get feedback.

^^if you have time and money--do it.

gprime, you go to Case? That's my current school...that I am also trying to get out of...

Applying to Harvard, Cornell, Stanford (I know it's not an Ivy).

Good luck everyone! Harvard apps are almost due!

Sachmoney, it seems like everybody is. I went to go get a letter from a prof, and there was somebody else ahead of me...he was doing the same thing. She's new here (as of this year I think), and told me I was the second Jewish student (which, for a social science department is huge) to ask her for a letter this year. Not a day goes by that I don't here at least 3 or 4 different people talk about plans to transfer out.

Yale
Dartmouth
Brown
Cornell (CAS)
Penn (CAS)

good luck everyone!

are you a soph? whats your reason for xfer?

Are you asking me? I'm a current freshman - transferring for social and academic reasons. My school is great, but it's lacking in a few of the elements that I believe are essential to the undergraduate experience.

where do you go now? do they not offer your intedned major?

I am applying to Penn (College of Arts & Sciences).

I'm at Johns Hopkins. They do have my intended major, and it is one of the top programs, but the strength of the graduate program makes it hard for undergraduates to get a lot of attention. I'm also just generally unhappy here.

Applying to Harvard :) Good luck to all!

Is anyone (or more likely everyone) applying to an Ivy from which they originally received a rejection letter as a freshman applicant?

probably so. i was rejected from everywehre i am currently applying to (except columbia, penn; i was waitlisted and then rejected). does that hurt your chacnes?

i'm not sure. i have a brilliant friend (now at Yale Law) who was rejected by harvard, columbia, and yale as a freshman, and once again rejected as a transfer by harvard and yale. but he was accepted by (and attended) columbia as a transfer.

personally, i was deferred/rejected from harvard, and rejected from brown. hopefully one of those will change.
