Current School: FL CC
Entering as: Junior
High School GPA: ~3.5
College GPA: ~3.7
SAT/ACT Scores: Did not submit
SAT II Scores: Did not submit
Significant ECs: PTK, volunteering, some writing, awards and scholarships
Hooks: URM, PTK, good letters of rec
US/Intl: US

Applied to: UNC Chapel Hill, UF, Emerson, UMiami
Accepted: ALL
Waitlisted: None
Rejected: None

Attending: UF!

Comments: Incredibly stressful process but so worth it… Narrow down a long list of choices by realizing what you TRULY want in a school. Consider how many of your credits transfer and how long it will take you to complete your degree. UNC was my dream school and I was thrilled to get in, but considering the academic requirements I would still need to complete and the OOS costs, it was not worth it.
Show passion in your essays and how you are a right fit for that school. Sell yourself and sound confident :)

Current School: Early College
Entering as: Sophomore
High School GPA: 3.5
College GPA: 3.7
SAT/ACT Scores: 2210

Significant ECs: Editor positions on high school and college newspaper, music performance, art awards.

Hooks: Dropped out of high school and got sent away to a mental hospital, then enrolled in college. Even though I’m an upper-class white girl, I wrote my essays about my experiences and I think that made me stand out.

Applied to: Oberlin, NYU, Reed, Macalester, Vassar, Tufts
Accepted: NYU, Reed
Rejected: Oberlin, Macalester, Vassar, Tufts

Attending: NYU!

Comments: I realized after submitting all my applications that I needed to be in a city, so I’m so glad that NYU accepted me!

Tips: Be honest in your essays. My parents told me to avoid talking about my mental hospital and boot camp experiences but I ignored them. Don’t try to write what you think you should. That’s what everyone else will do!

College GPA: 3.68 first semester, 3.76 second semester; overall 3.72
SAT/ACT Scores: 29 ACT, 2020 SAT
SAT II Scores: didn’t submit

US/Intl: US

Applied to: Michigan, Lehigh, Wisconsin, UVA, Vanderbilt
Accepted: Michigan, Lehigh, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt
Waitlisted: UVA
Rejected: none

Attending: Wisconsin or Vanderbilt

Comments: College GPA and Professor Recommendations matter. Write honest essays. Same with HS, apply to safety, match, reach - you never know what can happen. Keep in touch with admissions counselors at reaches. Without being annoying, let them know you’re interested.

Current School:St. John’s College (NM)
Entering as: Sophomore
High School GPA: 4.79
College GPA: 3.0 (3.4 at midterm)
SAT/ACT Scores: 1990 super scored 730-reading 600-math 690-writing
SAT II Scores: none
Significant ECs: lots of debate in high school (competitive on national level) a little theater in college but nothing much
Hooks: legacy at Whitman and Wellesly
US/Intl: USA

Applied to: Smith, Whitman, Wellesly, William and Mary
Accepted: Smith, Whitman
Waitlisted: William and Mary
Rejected: Wellesley

Attending: Smith!!!

Comments: This turned out better than I ever could have imagined! I aimed really high with pretty low stats but it payed off! I think the one thing working in my favor was that St. John’s is an incredibly unique school and pretty well known in the academic community as highly experimental and intellectual. Also I think another thing that helped (with LACs) is to take any chance possible to show your personality! Interviews, extra essays, all of it helps! I am so so happy! St. John’s was not a good fit for me at all but Smith looks fantasic and gave me incredibly generous financial aid!

Current School: Large, unranked state school
Entering as: Sophomore
High School GPA: 3.62 UW (AP, IB, Honors)
College GPA: 3.9 (4.0 first sem, 3.8 second sem)
Significant ECs: Mentor, Polynesian dance instructor, among other things. I also had over 2000+ hours of volunteering from HS through freshman year
Hooks: URM (Hispanic-Dominican, Black, and Polynesian)
US/Intl: US Citizen

Applied to: USC
Accepted: USC
Waitlisted: None
Rejected: None

Attending: USC!

Comments: My dream school since the 11th grade! Didn’t think I’d ever get accepted to USC. My essays were what saved me. I tailored my common app essay to USC, and showed them why I wanted to be a Trojan more than anything else. If it helps, I kept in contact with my regional admissions counselor as well as one of the admissions directors for my specific college at USC, whom I met in person when I took a tour back in high school (strangely, she remembered me). I didn’t send any recommendations and no official test scores (mine were sent with my HS transcript, so I’m not sure if they actually ‘counted’). I’m elated!

PM me if you have any questions or want advice! :)

Current School: Top five Canadian
Entering as: Sophomore

US/Intl: International

Applied to: Amherst, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, Northwestern, UPenn, Stanford, Yale, Williams, UNC Chapel Hill

Accepted: Northwestern, UNC Chapel Hill
Waitlisted: None
Rejected: Amherst, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, UPenn, Stanford, Yale, Williams

Attending: UNC Chapel Hill unless I win the lottery (then I’ll go with Northwestern)

Comments: Don’t bother transferring if you need financial aid. Northwestern’s transfer acceptance rate is 7%, lower than quite a few I was rejected from that I applied for financial aid at.

I didn’t apply for financial aid at UNC and Northwestern. I was accepted to UNC and Northwestern.

@Muaythai, congrats on Northwestern and UNC.

But you are international so that means 2 things, there is barely any financial aid for you, and its especially harder for you to get accepted. On top of that you applied to so many top schools.

So definitely apply for financial aid for need blind schools for sure. International students just have it rough!

Accepted: Oklahoma, Arizona
Waitlisted: NA
Rejected: NA

Attending: University of Oklahoma

Comments: Applied to OU because it guaranteed acceptance for a 2.5 college GPA or higher and the application basically consisted of writing your name, giving your stats, and waiting two weeks for an acceptance letter. I wanted one more option in case I didn’t like OU, so I applied to UA which is well known for geology.

Current School: Top 100 University in IL

Accepted: WashU, Vandy, Emory, BC, Brandeis, Wisconsin, UIUC
Waitlisted: NA
Rejected: Columbia, Northwestern, Cornell, UCB, UCLA, UVA, NYU

Attending: Wash U Olin!

Comments: The long journey finally came to an end. I was waiting for Northwestern’s decisions these days in order to make my last post on CC. A few things I want to mention. (1) Courses matter a lot. For the schools rejected me, Columbia won’t count any BUS class in term of transfer credit. I missed public speaking requirement of Cornell AEM. I didn’t fulfill the foreign language requirement of UVA. I also missed a few requirements of UCLA. (2) Out-of-state makes things harder. For UCB Haas, UCLA Biz Econ as well as UVA Mcintire. My conclusion is DO NOT APPLY IF YOU ARE OUT OF STATE. Don’t waste your money. In-state seem to be huge priority. (3) For NYU Stern I guess next year the admit rate will be higher. Since the admission rate this fall is like 2.5%. (4) I am pretty luck to get in so many great schools. Wash U is my top choice and Olin is just amazing!!! PM me if you have questions~

Current School: Top midwestern university
Entering as: Sophomore
High School GPA: 3.4 (bad sophomore year; upward trend afterwards)
College GPA: 3.475
SAT/ACT Scores: 26 ACT
Significant ECs: Worked for the Office of Admission in a variety of positions throughout my freshman year, professional business fraternity, variety of work experiences, yearbook editor in HS, SGA VP in HS, tons of community service.
Hooks: First generation college student
US/Intl: US

Applied to: Pace University, Drexel University (withdrew application), George Washington University
Accepted: Pace & GWU
Waitlisted:
Rejected:

Attending: GWU’s School of Business

Comments: I’ve been torn about this decision since winter break. I love my current school, but as an International Business major being in the Midwest isn’t really that ideal… Also, I regret not applying to other schools such as USC / BU / NYU…I wrote top-notch essays & had two top-notch letters of rec as well on top of good / unique ECs. I’m stoked, though. GWU’s campus is phenomenal, I’m absolutely in love with D.C., and I really love GWU’s values/ideas as a university which are really similar to my current university’s. On top of that, they gave me fantastic financial aid, too! Raise high!

Edit: Also, I withdrew my application from Drexel because I didn’t want to pay to send my transcripts to them. I only applied to Pace as a back up. If I wouldn’t have gotten accepted to GWU I would have stayed at my current university after realizing how bad of a reputation Pace has…shouldn’t have applied.

Current School: Community college.
Entering as: Junior Transfer
High School GPA: 2.2
College GPA: 3.51
SAT/ACT Scores: N/A
SAT II Scores: N/A
Significant ECs: Operator & Owner of my own business
Hooks: first-gen college student/American
US/Intl: US

Applied to: UCONN (BUSINESS SCHOOL), CUNY BARUCH (BUSINESS SCHOOL), AMERICAN UNIVERSITY (BUSINESS SCHOOL), DREXEL UNIVERSITY (iSchool), NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY (BUSINESS SCHOOL), BOSTON UNIVERSITY (BUSINESS SCHOOL), BENTLEY UNIVERSITY (BUSINESS SCHOOL), SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY (iSchool), FORDHAM UNIVERSITY (BUSINESS SCHOOL), AND UMIAMI (ECON).
Accepted: Every school except Boston University.

Attending: Northeastern University

Comments: Do not let anyone doubt you. I committed to Syracuse because I did not think I was going to get into the more selective universities I applied to. Be patient and wait to receive all your admits before sending a deposit if time allows. Most schools I applied to “required” calculus before transfer-- I never took it, but I did get an A in statistics. I believe I was rejected from BU because they put a large emphasis on high school grades. Anyways, hope any prospective transfer students found this helpful.

PS: If you are applying to a business school select your concentration as MIS. I believe that helped a lot since it isn’t a popular concentration. I am sticking with MIS personally, but you can always switch it when you enroll.

Current School:California Community College
Entering as:Sophomore
High School GPA:3.5
College GPA:3.9
SAT/ACT Scores:N/A (submitted with high school app)

Hooks:Trojan Transfer Plan
US/Intl:US

Applied to:USC
Accepted:USC
Waitlisted:none
Rejected:none

Attending:USC!!

Comments: When I did not get accepted to USC from high school I set my plan on getting in sophomore year. I was on the Trojan Transfer Plan and I followed what USC told me to do exactly. Every class I took transferred to USC and I took many GE’s. My essay was all about how everything I did this past year was to get into USC.

Current School: California Community College
Entering as: Junior Transfer
High School GPA: 3.49
College GPA: 3.95
SAT/ACT Scores: N/A
SAT II Scores: N/A
Significant ECs: Intern on a Michel Gondry feature film and Intern on a documentary. PTK, Volunteer, TONS of film experience, TAP Honors Program for UCLA, many other typical EC’s.
Hooks: Met with TAP admission officers at UCLA. Had great Letters of Rec from film teacher, Gondry’s producer, and director of the documentary. Upward trend.
US/Intl: US.

Applied to: UCLA (comm), UCBerkeley (film), UCD (comm), Cornell (comm), USC (film), NYU (film).
Accepted: UCLA, UCBerkeley, UCD
Waitlisted: NYU
Rejected: Cornell, USC

Attending: UCLA, unless NYU accepts and I drastically change my mind.

Comments: Was really surprised I was waitlisted at NYU, but not surprised I was rejected from USC, we have a love-hate relationship, especially since they notified me of my decision June 2nd… But sent in two different portfolios to the film schools. My NYU portfolio was really strong since there was a 2 month disparity between deadlines. I regret not submitting to UCLA film school but acceptance rate was 2% for 2012 and 2013.

PM me for questions! Especially you film applicants…

Current School: Michigan community college
Entering as: Junior
High School GPA: Don’t remember exactly, but under 1.0. I GED’d out my junior year.
College GPA: 3.98 at time of application.
SAT/ACT Scores: N/A
SAT II Scores: N/A
Significant ECs: Worked as math tutor for my community college for two semesters. Also self-studied more advanced math on my own time, which I wrote about in my essays.
Hooks: N/A
US/Intl: US, in state.

Applied to: University of Michigan, Wisconsin, Maryland, Texas, Illinois (flagship campuses on all of them)

Accepted: Michigan, Maryland, Texas, Illinois.
Waitlisted: None.
Rejected: Wisconsin? There was a problem with some of my transcripts. By the time they asked me to re-send them I had already been accepted to my first choice school, so I didn’t bother. Not sure if that counts as a rejection or not.

Attending: Michigan.

Comments: I did atrociously in high school and took the GED so I could attend community college instead. I performed much better there and took a decently rigorous course-load, including many math/science/programming classes. I think the essays I wrote were pretty strong, and I also got a glowing letter of recommendation from an English professor (and Michigan alumni) at my community college.

Current School:Top 50 LAC

Accepted:Wash U, Northwestern, Rice, UNC, UMich, UConn
Waitlisted:Wesleyan
Rejected:none

Attending:Wash U or Northwestern

Comments: Did not apply for financial aid. Applying as a freshman I was waitlisted at Wash U and denied by Wesleyan and Northwestern- was pleasantly surprised by change in decisions this year.
Can also note that I had an alumni relation at Wesleyan and applied EDII last year and showed a lot of interest both years and was still not accepted.

Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances!
