We started our unit on macromolecules today, and every time the teacher asked anything, even rhetorical, I would answer it. All thanks to studying for USABO. She eventually started ignoring me, which is pretty hard considering I sit in the front and no one else bothers answering.

@Mathguy: youāre welcome
oh yeah and beware, invertebrates and vertebrates chapters are just freaking hard @@##. if itās too much, just memorize taxonomy and some animals with cool names as examples because thatās all they asked for last year

@EveningSwan: that sounds kind of like me, haha but you just started on macromolecules? isnāt that a bit late?

^Yeah, Iām in regular bio because Frosh can only take regular bio. We spent the entire first quarter talking about ecosystems. I started studying for USABO in June, though. However, Iāve been on a three month break because I canāt find time to study. ;(

Hi guys!

I basically just joined CC because of the awesomeness of this thread!
Thanks so much for all of this advice!

@MathGuy
E-mail Kathy Frame (kframe@cee.org) and ask her if u can take the USABO at a different school.
Thatās what I did, and sheās hooking me up with a school to take the exam at.

Starting to study for USABO!

Since Iām taking HL IB Bio I decided to skip over the cells+chemistry+genes (for now) in hopes that weād cover these units, so starting on evolution
The book is readable but soooo long

Good luck to everyone!

Two Questions for NSQ or anyone:

1) How should I ask my Biology teacher to take the USABO exam? Iām pretty sure no one has asked her about it so I will be the first one, and she doesnāt really like meā¦

2) If she says no, then can I take the exam at a neighboring school? The best school in our state is about 15 miles away (the only reason I donāt go there is that you have to reside in the city limits to be a student) so Iām sure there are some geniuses taking it.

Please answer!

@starchow

look at my last post.
Kathy Frame is an organizer or something for USABO.
And really, really nice. You can ask her if you can take the
open exam somewhere else.

Embryology is so hard! It took literally one week to memorize every single details in the Campbell Biology!

@EveningSwan Ahh another freshman aspiring for USABO. Iām such an underachiever D:
I feel you, I donāt have time for USABO either I hate unnecessary homework of easy classes so much :(

@pleiotropy: hahaha yeah, I might just memorize the taxonomy like you said. But Iāll probably go back to read about them (theyāre actually pretty interesting) Bahahha, no you are DEFINITELY not an underachiever.

@Jalebiggirl: Hi! Haha you made the right choice It was even more active last year, but I know we can do just as well! I would love to do that, but once again, Iām positive that weāre the only school in my city who is even āconsidering.ā The rest donāt really do stuff like that. But thanks for offering advice :)

Does anyone know the semifinal qualifying cut off score for the 2003 - 2011 USABO open exams? The cutoff for last yearās exam ( 2012) was 24.

Is there a website for Biology Olympiad like AoPS (Art of Problem Solving) of Mathematics Olympiad? My friend is currently preparing for USAMO mainly using AoPS, and that site is so organized.

I just wonder if there is AoPS-like website for Bio Olympiadā¦-_-

^[CEE | USA Biology Olympiad](<a href=āCEE | USA Biology Olympiadā>CEE | USA Biology Olympiad)
Go there, sign up and go to USABO Student Corner > Student Resource Center. They sum up everything pretty well there.

Iām going to offer again prior open and semi exams. I do need a couple of answer keys, that I would appreciate someone sharing.

If you are interested in these, please PM me your email addyā¦ like thisā¦
xyz @ xyz . com otherwise I will see only ****.

Also āthank youā goes a long way and would be appreciated.

Well, all the open exams are posted on the CEE websiteā¦right?

thanks 10char

Has anyone already registered for the exam? I am a started and would like to get some tips - I read this thread and would like to either buy or borrow from library Campbellās book.

How is everyone doing in USABO studying? LOL I made the mistake of taking 6 APs xD
My first year taking AP classes, so Iām still trying to transition. Itās a little difficult to find extra time on Campbell aside from regular studying for AP Biology. But I love biology so much, Iām still motivated :)

6 APs!!! Iām not even taking one, yet I canāt even find the time to study for this. Iām extending my break from studying from two months to three months. The first two and a half months I actually had a legitimate excuse (marching band),but now itās just laziness.

^Meh, I donāt blame you. Youāre actually smart, because youāre not doing horribly in your classes xD

You do marching band? That DOES take a lot of time (or so, I heard). Iām alwaaysss lazy. But I bet youāre still ahead of meā¦
