*"Official" 2013 USABO*

All right guys, I have a question. I’ve been reading this thread, and noticed that to make national finals, ravens biology and campbells should be sufficient. do you guys agree? I am a senior and need to make national finals this year, and also what extent should i study both books?

^Raven’s biology? Not Raven’s Biology of Plants?? haha, I think it would make sense to have a botany textbook along with a general biology textbook rather than two similar textbooks xD

But Campbell is definitely the most important, so I think it’s important to know anything and everything inside Campbell! :)

nah,i was talking about ravens bio of plants :P

I think it is very helpful (not important) to full read Raven Plant Biology and partially read Molecular Biology of Cells (Alberts). I am currently reading both books, and I have to say that they contain far more interesting contents than Campbell alone. Whatever the uncleared questions on Campbell Biology are answered on those two books.

Where are you guys?

^With Campbell? Reallly behind. I’m like, on Ch. 35 O.o

^Not as behind as me! I’m on the genetic section, not sure what chapter it is.

Okay, so I’m really scared about asking my bio teacher if we can spend $75 to take the USABO. For starters, she absolutely HATES our class and literally blames everything that goes wrong on our class. And whenever she talks about how bad our class is, she’s always looking in my direction…

The worst that your teacher can say is “no” right? So you should ask the question, regardless of what happened before. Asking to sign up also means that you’re interested in biology, so she might change her mind. So just go for it, and hope for the best.

^That’s a good point. I never thought of it like that. But since I’m too much of a wuss, I emailed her along with some homework. Now I’ll just wait until Monday to see what she says.

to prepare semi, only Campbell’s book is enough ?

Is semi a multiple choice questions or FRQ ?

Since we’re at the 1.5 month mark-ish. Does anyone have any high-frequency topics/resources to study at this point? (Campbell chapters, things on websites, general advice, Cliffs?)

Does anyone know the cutoff scores for open exams 2003 to 2011? Last year’s cutoff was 24.

When is the exam?

is it way too late to start studying now? I have a lot of knowledge on biology already, I have taken honors bio and am currently taking ecology and ap enviro.

@holsen Teachers are supposed to administer it from Feb 5-15.

@awesome I don’t think it’ll ever be too late to start studying! Even if you don’t get where you want to go this year, you’ll have a head start for next year!

What is the cut-off score usually for the people that pass the Open Rounds?

Sup Fellow CC’ers,

As many of you know, the Open Round for the 2013 USABO Competition is going to start soon and I just figured out that the test is actually quite difficult. Apparently we were supposed to read the whole Campbell book? I was unaware of that…I’m F*****! I was wondering if it would be ok if I just read the powerpoints/notes of the Chapters instead of reading the chapters? Will notes/powerpoints suffice to pass the Open round? That’s all I am worried about. I just want to pass the Open round. If I pass, I’ll definitely read the whole book thoroughly. I will also take practice tests and also memorize all the charts/graphs and the glossary.

Thanks for your comments! Have fun studying Biology!

I need some help.

I’ve had difficulty setting up a USABO club at my school, so could I take it at a different school in my state?
Also, do you need to know all of Molecular Biology of the cell? (in addition to Campbell)

Campbell lists every single step of glycolysis (e.g. phosphofructokinase transfers a phosphate group from ATP to fructose-6-phosphate). Do we need to know this much detail for Open/Semi? Thanks!

@Phloem04 I would think it would be appropriate for you to know all of the steps for the open, and surely for the semi’s. If you were in AP Biology you should already know all of them except ~2 steps.

@mapletree7 Is your school in the Midwest by any chance?
