Official 2014 Georgetown Transfer Thread

I got an e-mail this afternoon!
Im transferring from a large public university.
Intended Major: Biology (planning on Neurobiology concentration)
College GPA: 3.96
HS GPA: 4.76 (weighted)
SAT: 2160
Extracurriculars:
-Volunteer at a lab
-Heavily involved with working with animals (volunteer at a wildlife rehab hospital, multiple dog adoption centers… etc…)
There is more, but I don’t feel like writing it all down, if you want to know more feel free to message me! I believe I had excellent essays and letters of recommendation. I also had a stellar interview. Needless to say, I am ecstatic!! I did get into Brown this morning, which was totally unexpected. Georgetown has always been my dream school though, so I have a tough decision! Any input?

*I guess it is also worth adding that I had asked for an early read, which is why I believe they e-mailed me today.

Congrats @abear19‌!!!

Did you request early read because you were holding another acceptance?

I also received an e-mail with an acceptance letter this afternoon today - at about 5pm.

I was very surprised because I had not requested an expedited decision or notification. Perhaps they’re just sending decisions out at different times?

I applied to the Walsh School of Foreign Service for International Economics.

Has anyone heard back from NHS?

@ArchibaldTuttle‌ we’re definitely on the same page- basically, all the reasons I’m still spending a lot of time (essentially agonizing) on this decision you listed out. I’ve been lucky enough to spend a summer in DC already, and will be spending this summer interning in DC as well, which makes me love DC even more and want even more to go to DC so I can intern there all the time, but also almost makes me wonder whether, since it is Yale and I’ve already started to establish connections in DC, it’s worth it to go get the really prestigious academics.
Basically, you hit the nail on the head with many of the reasons I’m still considering turning down Yale for Georgetown- which is something I never thought I’d say.
As one of my professors said after I told them I was choosing between Yale and Georgetown, it comes down to 10% logical decisions and 90% gut feeling…so let’s hope I can make a choice after visiting both!

I also got my official letter from Georgetown today! Well, email, not letter- it seems to be going by program, my AO told me that Pol Econ made their decisions earlier this week, while other programs weren’t done yet. Congrats to all who have gotten in so far!

Can I ask how you guys are contacting your AO? I had no clue I was even assigned to one…

I called admissions- I didn’t know I was assigned to one either, but when I needed an early read (which only came 2 days early, but oh well), I called and they gave me a name and email.

@Luthsn mine contacted me earlier in the year. But you can probably call and ask. When I called inquiring about an expedited decision, the admissions office gave me the contact information of my AO

Weird, whenever I was down there (coming from AU, I did most of my dealings with the admissions office face-to-face) they always leered at sending me anyone specific, preferring to point me toward whoever had the least work on their plate. I think they were trying to get rid of bias in the process, which makes sense.

Also, for us lucky kids who have been accepted, has anyone received their physical letter / big envelope yet? It’s been more than a week since I was accepted and nothing has come in the mail.

When I had a missing requirement is when my AO contacted me. After that I tried dealing with the office to send materials and they told me just correspond directly with that person in the email as they were in charge of my file. Not sure there was any issue with bias in that perspective, they just divvied up students and assign them by state and department I believe. I called yesterday and they gave me a new assignment and only asked my major before giving the contact info.

That seems to align with what someone said earlier about department decisions.

So I went ahead and sent an email to my admissions officer, asking if there had been any updates to my application. Don’t know if this is an advisable move, but she made it clear earlier this month that the committee had requested additional information, and I’m almost certain a decision had been made. I’d rather know now than wait another two weeks for a paper rejection letter.

@ArchibaldTuttle‌ what program did you apply to, government?

@KingofSweden‌ be careful with rushing your decision… It’s a long process in which committees deliberate on your application and then send it to other committees if they don’t accept you right away. The next committee begins deliberations when the previous committees are finished and they continue to evaluate everyone until the last spot is filled.

@Luthsn thanks for the advice man. Georgetown has really grown on me in the past few months, and a rejection would really sting. I guess I’m just trying to prepare myself for the worst.

@KingofSweden‌ trust me I feel the same way. Going into DC from U of Maryland every weekend and seeing the school and the town has increased my desire to be accepted tenfold… Yet when I heard 7.5% acceptance rate I lowered my expectations a bit and started formulating a plan to better my app for next year.

@Luthsn‌
I’m also at UMD lol. And I have to actually go on gtown campus every Friday. Today commencement ceremonies were going on… It’s so hard to be there and not actually be there yet. I just ended my sophomore year though, so this is my only shot

I’m on the west coast, so I don’t have the torture of being so close. I can’t imagine having to pass by the campus all the time.

I have been to DC four times now, though, and just every time I’ve been to the city, I’ve fallen more and more in love.

@GunninMed‌ wait…you actually HAVE to go down to Georgetown every Friday or do you just do it because you like to? Because I go there almost every Saturday to be on the campus and in the town… It’s unbelievably addicting.

@brigitr‌ You are honestly CRAZY if you turn down Yale. Seriously, I’m sorry but you’re nuts if you are even considering Gtown over that. I don’t know who would do that

@Luthsn‌ it’s a have to. I have training at Yates Friday morning, my trainer is a Gtown coach that does private lessons there. I also do my clinical volunteer hours at medstar gtown, and shadow a few of their teaching attendings.
As far as want to, I’ve lived in the area since middle school, georgetown has always been my go to shopping and eating…and work 5 mins away now so I have lunch at water st. Everyday. So it’s pretty much a staple in my life. Friends there yadda yadda.
