Official 2021 UChicago Waitlist Discussion

@notveryzen If the class of 2021 is full, why aren’t they informing the waitlisted students about it?

@sprintahead Because they’re “not releasing information to the public at this time” as quoted by the AO.

Lack of transparency seems to be a constant this year with the refusing to make data public. Statistics for this admissions round won’t be published until fall of next year when the next class is applying. I guess UChicago has something to hide.

@sprintahead The University of Chicago holds all the cards.

@Bluejay21 Probably means that they over enrolled. Most likely due to the inflated yield rate due to ED and the fact that they filled the class mostly with ED.

screw it. I’m out.

@Bluejay21 I’m really annoyed with how they handled everything this year. Yes, I’m sad I didn’t get in, but in a way I’m glad I didn’t because if this is how they treat prospective students, then I hate to see how they treat current students.

My DD got offered a spot in the class of 2022 today. She told them in her LOCI that she planned on taking a gap year - which she does. So excited for her!

@Kitsacat Congrats to your daughter!

Congratulations! That’s fantastic!

@Meganerd2012 I doubt they are hiding anything and there is no reason for them to announce anything to the waitlisted kids. Even if they are overenrolled, this is the first time they have used ED and who knows how many they will lose over the summer due to financial aid issues or kids getting off other waitlists. Being on the waitlist means you have 1 in a thousand shot at getting in even in a regular year so I would hope there aren’t too many kids holding off on making decisions thinking a UChicago acceptance is coming. The waitlist letters are pretty clear about that.

@notveryzen When I meant that they might be hiding something, I was talking about why they are delying the release of the 2021 data until the fall. There’s speculation about about in some other thread (some say it might be due to a very low RD rate in comparsion to ED which could influence how many they accept on the waitlist to inflate RD rates). I get that chance is against us in the waitlist, and I honestly wasn’t expecting much, but I’m just appalled with the interaction that I had with the AO. When I ask a question for clarification if the AO will continue to look through the waitlist and if we would be contacted regardless, I should not get the reply that “they’re not releasing information to the public at this time” as frankly, that tells me nothing and is entirely unhelpful. If they’re going to treat me with little regard, then they shouldnt have waitlisted me in the first place. Quite frankly, this whole situation has turned my love for UChicago into bitterness and hatred. The only good thing that came out of this is that I’m very determined to make the most of my college education, so that I can make UChicago sorry for not admitting me. No UChicago, I don’t need you; I only need myself to succeed.

Yeah, I think the all new thing “if you are admitted, would you be willing to take a gap year?” on our portal’s is just a way for the university to make money out of students who really want to go no matter what, and they still can get their low acceptance rates and “diverse” student body. I honestly feel like those who are being admitted don’t have a full ride and have to take out loans. I’m starting to believe honestly that the “waitlist” game gets students that are willing to pay for most of their cost of attendance and the university doesn’t have to provide them with grants or scholarships. I applied for ED 2 and got waitlisted, and honestly, I wish they had rejected me, cause my stress level has been skyrocketing since than. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

@Meganerd2012 you can turn 'em down for grad school. Good luck to you!

Bitterness and hatred isn’t the way to go here. You’re headed to a great school – appreciate what Reed has to offer and don’t look back.

@Meganerd2012 good things are coming your way. For every hurdle you overcome, there’s always something better to look forward to. You gave it your all and honestly, that’s all that matters.

And to the ones who got waitlisted and will probably not be receiving a call from their AO, cheer up! We made it this far and everyone deserves a pat on their backs for dealing with the stress that the application process has brought about.

Hey guys, I just wanted to swing by and say all of y’all are amazing and 100% deserving of your place at UChicago, and even the waitlist is a pretty solid accomplishment!! I was waitlisted last year, sent updates of continuing interest (& offered to take a gap year), but was ultimately released from the list on my prom night, so that was kind of a bummer.

But! You will survive & get through this! I was just admitted as a transfer student like two days ago, and am still in shock and awe, and I’m positive being waitlisted the first time around and reapplying gave me a solid leg up. So basically, try to fall in love with the school you’ve committed to (mine wasn’t a good fit for me for a handful of other reasons), be realistic about the fact that the waitlist is honestly really long for what will probably be only a handful of spots, but don’t give up hope.

If you were waitlisted this year, you are absolutely good enough to get in, it might just be all kinds of weird external factors (who else applied, how they’re trying to round out the class, etc), and they know that. Hang in there, it’s tough, but it can (and will) get better!

hey just wanted you to know that gap year acceptances are still coming through. My son got one on Monday

Anyone have any idea many kids are filling class of 2022 at this point?

Based on last years numbers, I would say around 100 to 150 students will be invited to participate in the Gap year. They are picking off the students they like the most in the wait list. They probably will fill between 7% to 10% of next year’s class with these students. It’s pure “yield gold” for the University This tells me that they want to lower the admit rate for ED for 2022.

Hey yall, I talked with my counselor yesterday and she just asked me if I was interested in the gap year option, so I didn’t necessarily get admitted into the class of 2022. She told me that the class of 2021 is pretty much full, though.
