Yay.....cmv.....yay!!!! :) :) :)

"So I guess my point is that Smith really looks at the whole person. I'm so glad that they chose to accept me. I don't know if I'll end up at Smith, but now I can't help but imagine what life will be like if I did go!"

I hope you'll get the opportunity to visit before making a decision.

That is kind of ... uhmmmmm... let's say it is just funny.

I have W660 CR640 M780
Math1 770 Math2 780 Chemistry 640,
GPA 5.97 on a 6 scale
rank top 7%
perfect recs (i`m sure because i had great relationships with all the teachers and studens) from teachers i have known for 4-5 years.
uhm good essays i suppose...
Well, I am an international applicant - Bulgarian..

and i have kind of enough extracurriculars
soccer team captain
drama club (awards)
short track speedskating (not competitive)
i have held different jobs during the summers and i have periods during which i have worked for about 50 hours a week
currently working as a part-time translator
studying Arabic and Hebrew...
i am fluent in Bulgarian and English and have sufficient knowledge of German and Hebrew. Additionally speak some Spanish and Arabic....
and after all I got rejected from Smith... O.o
I am surprised too ...... sigh

keep my fingers tightly crossed for the other 3 schools I applied to

The ridiculous part of the situation is that Smith was my safety... you can imagine what happens to a person who gets rejected from her safety... anyway I am taking it with a smile... I just wonder how things like that happen at all.....

i'm sorry aberine... where else have you applied to/expecting to hear from?

keep my fingers tightly crossed for the other 3 schools I applied to}}

I'm sure you'll do great. Is English your second language? What did you score on the TOFEL?

LOL... yeah
well I called/e-mailed them and asked to have the TOEFL waived. Cornell and Dickinson agreed readily, Princeton didn
t agree but I still had an interview with them over the phone and Smith didn
t say anything... in fact I contacted them on several occasions and they were not nice... they were not even helpful...(they=Smith)
That should answer the questions of both of you.

Aberine, Smith was a safety over Dickinson? Smith is known to be much more competitive.

I hope by now you've received at least that YES! from Dickinson. You'll get word from the other colleges over the next week. My fingers are crossed that you'll get nothing but acceptances from here on.

By next year, you'll be someplace and won't be able to imagine what it would have been like at any other school.

{{well I called/e-mailed them and asked to have the TOEFL waived.}}

Why should they waive an important test? Ive never heard of an SAT being waived either at colleges which require them.

Students have in the past been admitted unable to speak or understand English well enough to function in class.
It seems to me you would understand, without a way to verify your proficiency in English, you put yourself a great disadvantage and tied Smith's hands, so to speak.

Im also sure Smith looked at the fact they would have to deny admission and aid from another deserving student if you were admitted, even though you were not willing to document your English knowledge. That would be a non-starter if I were the admission officer working on your file.

As I see it, Smith would have been doing you a great disservice if they did admit you, had your family meet what may have been a large financial burden, only to realize after the fact you were unable to compete on the level Smith requires.
They very likely did you an immense favor by denying you.

Im curious; if your English is very proficient, why didnt you take the test and demonstrate that fact instead of going through all the hassle of asking and calling numerous colleges to waive the TOFEL?
Since Smith was your safety, in your mind anyway, which it obviously wasnt, that sentiment and overconfidence very well may have come across in your phone conversations and your application. Just a thought. :)

Im very happy Cornell and Dickinson waived the test for you. Princeton was correct by not doing so, imo. Give us an update when the admission decisions are out. Good luck. :)

Agreed, RLT! Why ask to have such an important test pulled? I do not see the advantage that Cornell and Dickinson had by pulling this test. As someone who has worked with many inner city students whose second language is English, why would an institution such as Smith, who puts great weight on the liberal arts (i.e. reading, writing and speaking) take the chance. If you ask me, Smith really didn't have any other option than to not accept her.
I also don't understand how Smith was her "safety?" Yet, she was denied. Couldn't have been much of a safety, heh?

W660 CR640 M780

I think her CR and Writing scores are well within the range of Smith's accepted students for English-speaking American educated students. I wouldn't have known English is her second (or third) language from her posts and scores. As for why she was denied--I expect Smith being need-aware school probably couldnt meet her financial aid requirements completely--it's tough for internationals at need-aware schools.

Smith is one of the most generous colleges there is for international students.

And you cant go by SAT scores when judging ones ability to speak and understand English. Especially to understand the language when its spoken quickly in lectures and class discussions.

My daughter is fluent in written (and was supposed to be in speaking and hearing ) French and could ace an SAT in French. Come to think of it, she did. She was put in upper level French her 1st yr at Smith.

During her sr. yr. of h/s we visited Paris. She had a great deal of difficulty trying to understand others b/c the speech patterns were different than what she was used to in class and they spoke extremely fast. I was not happy. I had forgotten a great deal of my French and she was supposed to be my interpreter and keep me out of trouble, unlike some pervious trips. :)

RLT, I'll be happy to get you into trouble in Paris. Please forward travel dates and air ticket ASAP.

Bien sure, LeDad.

RLT, I'll be happy to get you into trouble in Paris. }}

I'm sure you would. I'll ask LeWife if for a few days in Paris I can pretend Im single again.
Remember who Im married to though :)

Que passe en Paris, reste en Paris.

Actually, that reminds me of a joke that I can't tell here.

And, RLT, don't forget I have TheMom to contend with, aka Frau Leutnant-Direktor.

hello -

i am also an international student, currently living in california.
i asked for a lot of FA, AND i was accepted!
i really didn't think i would get in because of my citizenship and financial aid request.
smith indeed is generous to intl's compared to scripps, which alternatelisted me.
oh well - i guess smith is also better at choosing its students : )

i don't think SAT scores can define a student.

well hooooray!
congrats to everyone + gluck to every deserving kid here who is waiting to hear from other schools : )

{{i was accepted}

Congrats dinosaurraawr. Welcome to the neighborhood. Thanks for the post. Have you visited yet?

aww not yet -
can anyone describe the campus for me?

ready to visualize

Here's a start.

Have you never been in New England? What country are you from?

aww thanks!

i am from south korea -
but i've been living in calif for ~7 years.
i've never been to new england...
but hopefully i will be able to visit as i make my final decision.

O.K., New England...beautiful landscape (especially Fall with foliage), 4 seasons (Winter argghhh!), the ocean (ahhhh, the ocean), and great colleges and college towns (NoHo being the best IMHO). RI (where I live)...the home of of former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci (need I say more!)

When you visit Smith, you will really be able to visualize what a "typical" old New England town looks and feels like. Beautiful campus nestled by Paradise Pond, New England architecture (gables, porches, etc.), and NoHo's a very eclectic college town (great restaurants, very interesting people watching). What's not to like????
