Official AIME Discussion Thread

How good is a 4 for a sophomore?

(I should have gotten 6...but ARG! I HATE calculation mistakes @@")

How do you guys know ur score so early?

I don't know my real score...I just compared with the people at my school that I'm pretty sure they got a 7 or 8...their answers are more accurate than mine, so comparing my answers with them gives me a good idea of how well I did. We also worked some of the ones we weren't sure out so we basically have the answer key in our hands, we just need the official answers to confirm.

One more thing I was curious about -- since AMC and AIME doesn't give official "score reports", how would the colleges know for sure that what we got on the AMC and AIME were actually our own scores?

That's a question at my house too...how does a participant inform colleges about these scores? Should they save the letters they get from the AMC/AIME and then copy them as a supplement to their applications?

There were letters? I never got one even though I took the AMC 10 last year, the AMC 12 and the AIME this year. Basically I haven't received anything from AMC, so this question is starting to hassle me.

Gosh.
You guys are making me feel so stupid :P
I only worked through 5 or 6; I only know of 1 that I got right!! And I'm a senior.

Oasis ~ During the AIME, my son was given a letter on AMC letterhead by his test administrator that stated his AMC 12 score, so we have this document. I was sort of asumming that he would get a letter from the AIME folks stating his score on the exam, but this is the first year for us, so don't take my word for it...

AMC publishes a book with a name of all the top scorers on each test. The REALLY HIGH scorers have their names on the AMC Web site, and some who ace certain tests get their photos on the AMC Web site. Browse around and you'll see the high scorers. Most people who follow math competitions know the names of the stars.

heh, well it's been fun. I got out of three boring morning classes so it's well worth it ;)

If you're a 9 grader do they count your AMC10 Score at all for usamo

Eh, dammit. My brain died halfway through and I forgot how to work with fractions >.<

However, pretty sure i got a 5 (Junior, first time taking). Does a 5 s.uck horribly?

No, you just need the AIME floor.

When do the official scores go up?

I actually thought this year was relatively easy compared to years before, I got a seven, seeing as I'm fortunate enough to have two kids at my school who each got 14, I'll be able to learn from them in the years that come. The aime floor score will most likely be at least seven, probably eight.

Anyone know how to do the coin problem? For some reason I keep getting 140. Anyone running into the same problem?

The coin problem:
First count the number of ways to choose 4 of the coins to be gold. That's just 8 choose 4=70.
Then, they have to be put so that no faces are together. So you can put them back to back at one point, which can be any of the 7 places where the coins touch. Or, they can all be facing up, or all facing down. That's 9 total, so 9*70=630. Hope that helps :)

aegh, I was soo close to that one. Brain crashed right thinking about the 9 places.
God, two dumb mistakes. Would've gotten me a five.
Well, I guess that is the main prob for everyone in math. RETARDED mistakes.

I hear that. I got eight, but thanks to good old stupid mistakes...

2.

made a glaring adding error and messed up the coin problem, but relieved i at least got a 3
