official AP Physics B 2011-2012 thread!

Ok, the AP Physics B curriculum to me is too big.
We’re still on optics and have nuclear physics left… barely any time to review -.-

We have our last lesson tomorrow, then it’s all AP review! Quite exciting, actually. Although it’s only now that I truly realize how massive the curriculum is. There’s so much to know, and the test is in under a month now. -_-

Wow haven’t been on here in quite some time but im going ti gtech next year and I found out they don’t accept any credit for physics b but my school makes me pay the $90time to take it anyway…so I mean, is there really any point in me trying super hard to get that 5 anymore?

Decent schools won’t take Physics B if your major is math-related.
They probably will take it if you wanted to do something like a History-related major or something (even Biology-related major depending on the school).

Hello,

I am currently taking this class and was wondering if any of you had a few full AP practice test. PM me and I might provide you with one or two that i have, i am trying to build up a collection to cram before the AP.

Thank you!

@semaphore12 There are actually a couple of good engineering schools that take Physics B for your Physics 101 course (see: Classical Mechanics). Like you can get a 5 on B or a 4/5 on Physics C: Mech. Granted it doesn’t make much sense, but it’s there. Also, I didn’t see any exceptions for STEM majors listed, so I don’t think there are. Note that I’m talking schools like Lehigh and Northeastern here, no slouches. Although, in general, you’re right.
Of course, my research could be screwed up too, because it wouldn’t be the first time.

I don’t think there are official full AP practice tests. Collegeboard releases actual full-response questions, but not MC’s. So I would do MC’s with textbooks, and do full-response with Collegeboard ones.

College Board DOES release exams for practice. Work on a physics B exam with me on college confidential? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sciences/1330923-work-ap-physics-b-exam-me.html</a></p>

Hey guys, I’m taking the exam as well, and will probably help you all get fives by bombing the test myself (: lol, jk, but really. We just started magnetism. and we need to get through nuclear physics. In two weeks. WOO! NO REVIEW TIME YAY! So, yeah. I need a 4 to get credit at UChicago (I’m a bio major) so hopefully I can pull it off, but I’m kind of just not even trying but I’m still self studying. ANYWAY, YAY!

Just finished nuclear physics and are officially done with all material related to AP Exam :D

Took a practice free response and feeling fairly confident. MCQ is still a time problem

Speaking of which, what are you guys doing after the AP Exam? We’re basically doing all the rest of the labs we haven’t done and Cosmology/Astrophysics and Relativity.

Just finished optics. Only have nuclear and modern physics left.

I’m ordering Chinese food the day of the exam and me and a couple of friends are having our Last Supper right before the test.

@pentupenguin
lol…you make it sound like you are going to die during the test :slight_smile:
we finished everything and are reviewing. i can do really well on the free response but the multiple choice kills me. i only get like 35 right out of 70. :(

PRACTICE EXAMS FOR THOSE WHO WANT THEM:

<a href=“Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board”>Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board;

Hello, everyone.

I didn’t have an exactly “thorough” AP Physics teacher, and I picked up a review book about 2 weeks ago. I’m kind of freaking out because we have about 1/4 of the course left, and no time for review. Don’t get me wrong- he’s a great teacher, I understand the topics intuitively, but I do not have enough time to memorize all of the equations and their uses for the AP Physics B exam. The teacher does not teach according to AP convention, which is why it is the only class where the pass rate (in our school) is about 5% (not a typo).

Does anyone mind telling me the minimum multiple choice % needed to pass the AP Physics B exam? I know it’s on a curb, but what was last years?

Also, I’m aiming for about 50% of the free response correct. About how much multiple choice would I need to get correct to pass with a 3 on the AP Physics B exam?

It would be helpful if you could also list your sources- if not, no problem. There’s only about 2 weeks left, and I have 4 AP’s, so I need to allot my priorities according to your response- my grade might depend on it.

Also, does anyone have an idea of the OVERALL percentage needed for a 3?

We have just started optics. We are basically finishing a chapter a day/night. We actually have night classes now cause we were nowhere close to finishing before. Of course the night classes were optional but they have helped literally all of us. We are close to finishing but our teacher guarantees that we won’t even touch modern physics and possibly nuclear.

Hell yes for 3 hr physic classes every monday and thursday nights!

^^^ That really blows. And it would be awful for you guys if there were to be a FRQ on nuclear or modern physics.

We finished up the material yesterday and are going to be spending the whole next week reviewing.

The last question is always a nuclear/modern physics question. I would highly recommend reviewing previous FRQs on nuclear physics; it’s always the last question. Usually the question is heavily formula based however you just need to know when to apply the formulas which isn’t too hard.

yea just to show you guys how bad of a teacher I had, my class hasn’t touched magnetism, nuclear physics modern physics, thermodynamics (if that’s on there?), capacitors, and we barely touched on optics. luckily I don’t get credit for this exam so it doesn’t really matter for me but still…this is absolutely ridiculous

@jspeed12
what did you do the entire year??? what you didn’t cover is over half the course.

@cortana431
I was reviewing the nuclear questions and they seem to be either about the mass defect of the nucleus or have to do with this formula [E = hf = pc/K = hf - o(work function)]. You might also have to draw the different states of an electron but that’s not too hard

Literally (completely serious here) for the first 10-15mins of our 45min class, my teacher just sits at his computer and we just talk to each other for that entire 15mins and then we have about 30 for actual “learning” during which time he doesn’t really teach much. Just rambles on about random stuff.
I printed out some of the past free responses and I don’t know anything from them. There’s only been 1 person since he’s been here thats gotten a 5 and she’s at MIT now. I wanna try to learn everything else but it’s soooooo much we don’t know and I don’t get credit so I feel no drive to do it. Pretty much threw $87 in the garbage
