@thalia1832 congrats! i have similar stats (low gpa), good essay i think, test scores. i also submitted and art portfolio.
i dont know if i got in yet, but your decision gave me some hope! congrats again, girl.

@artobsessed- thanks! it’s really cool that you submitted an art portfolio. I think that Barnard tends to go for the “quirky” candidate over someone more cookie-cutter. Good luck!

Reflection[ul]

[] Strengths: I tried my hardest in everything I could change besides my GPA. I was depressed Fresh/Soph years. My Junior year GPA was a 3.8 W. My essay, supplements, and art portfolio were all good.
[] What you tried to focus on in your application: I am very passionate about a wide range of interests. I am also a feminist. I also tried to emphasize that I am not my GPA, but I guess they did not see that.
Weaknesses: GPA, one SAT II, the fact that I was asking for FA (really don’t think admissions are truly need-blind. How can they be?)
[] Why you think you were rejected: GPA, asking for FA
[] Where were you accepted: Fordham
[/ul]

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 1970 and 1930; superscored-- cr 670 / m 580 / w 750 (10 essay)
[] ACT: 28, 28 (twice)
[] SAT II: N/A
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.712 UW; 3.93 W
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 110/591 (unweighted); 65/591 (weighted)

[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP U.S. Govt/Politics, AP English Lit & Comp, Philosophy, Kinesiology, Economics, Univ. of Minn. Writing course, World Literature (Social/Political Analysis), AP Physics B, and AP Studio Art; Independently studying AP Comparative Govt/Politics, AP Spanish Language, and Human Geography
[li] Major Awards: Several poetry awards, a big VFW scholarship
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Debate (captain) 9-12, Speech (MVP) 10-12, Newspaper (editor, writer) 10-12, Art club (president) 10-12, Tae Kwon Do (2nd degree black belt) since 2001ish, Literary magazine (editor) 11-12, Senior Class Office (President) 12, National Honor Society 11-12, a few other small things
[] Job/Work Experience: N/A
[] Volunteer/Community service: NHS, Senior Class, Various political campaigns
[] Summer Activities: TRAVEL!
[] Essays: Very strong. I killed myself over that personal statement. I wrote about introversion and extraversion, and how much writing has helped me develop who I am. I wrote about a fictional TV feminist for the Woman essay, my grandmother for the Why Barnard essay, female empowerment, peech team for Unafraid, etc.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Very good, I think. My Honors Spanish teacher (and Spanish Club advisor), my AP Lang/Comp teacher (and Newspaper advisor), and my AP Art History teacher (and Art club advisor). I picked these teachers because I liked them and their classes a lot (and they like me), and because they know me well both in class and through extracurriculars they advise.
[] Counselor Rec: She’s new this year, but I think she likes me a lot.
[] Additional Rec: N/A… Although I (my gc, actually) did accidentally submit 4 recs instead of 2.
[li] Interview: Went really well. We talked about Mad Men and how we’d both organized screenings of the presidential debates for our respective schools (I interviewed mid-October). She’s a senior at Barnard.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Political Science, maybe Art History minor; I want to study Arabic, French, and Computer Science, as well.
[] State (if domestic applicant): Minnesota
[] Country (if international applicant): N/A
[] School Type: Public; I’m the first from my school to ever apply to Barnard.
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female, obviously.
[] Income Bracket: 100k.
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I sent in several examples of my writing (poetry, short story) and really stressed writing as a passion and ambition throughout my life. As well, I stressed my community involvement and political goals (I’m Senior Class President); I volunteer a lot for local offices and was very active with the election – all things I developed throughout my application and brought up in my interview! Politics and writing.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[list]
[] Strengths: Essays/writing, ECs, Recommendations, AP classes
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: WRITER! POLITICAL!
[] Weaknesses: GPA, SAT/ACT
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Barnard likes a writer, and a politically motivated and active one at that.
[*] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’ve only applied to the Univ. of Minnesota Twin Cities, and was accepted. I’d planned to apply to Sarah Lawrence (second choice to Barnard), Vassar, Columbia, Fordham, and Univ. of Edinburgh, as well.

[ *] Job/Work Experience: Tutor
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Receptionist
[ *] Summer Activities: Reading, watching tv, traveling (?)
[ *] Essays: I loved them! My advice: be genuine, and don’t try too hard to *amaze anyone. Just try and represent yourself honestly, that way they’re evaluating the real you- or at least as close as they can get.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: Good enough I guess?
[ *] Counselor Rec: She barely knows me.

[ /list][ b]Reflection[ /b][ list]
[ *] Strengths: Course load, Essays
[ *] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I worked really hard on my essays because they were the only things that were completely in my control. I made it clear that I’m a passionate person.
[ *] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars maybe? I also doubt my counselor recommendation was all that dazzling considering all she knows about me are my grades/what classes I’m taking.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Luck, honestly. But I do feel like Barnard is the right place for me and I guess that the admissions office agreed!

I also submitted a small architecture portfolio, including photographs and narratives.

Admissions are truly need-blind at Barnard. Somewhere between 50-60% of Barnard students have financial aid. You should consider the consequences of making such a statement without any solid evidence, since it could deter excellent applicants who need FA from applying. I applied ED last year and asked for significant FA and I was accepted and the vast majority of my friends here have financial aid as well. So potential applicants, don’t let this post deter you! I can assure you firsthand that Barnard will not reject you because you need FA.

Hi Nardist!

[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: No - BUT WAIT. READ THIS. To the argument that you got rejected because Barnard doesn’t like students with socioeconomic difficulties at home. THIS IS FALSE. I know for a fact that Barnard works tirelessly to make sure all girls who are academically qualified have a chance to attend Barnard. My mom works on a few scholarship boards to make sure Barnard continues to provide for those with financial need more than ever. Also, Barnard is need-blind: no matter how little your household makes, they won’t see that until they have already decided on whether you are ACADEMICALLY qualified. Telling people you didn’t get in because they don’t like poor applicants is ridiculous and discouraging for other girls in similar economic situations. My mom received a large amount of need-based financial aid to Barnard. It made the world of difference to her, and Barnard was happy to do it.

[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Strong academic record, demonstrated love for Barnard as my #1, put a huge amount of effort into my essays.
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to the honors college at my state school, accepted to Tulane University in New Orleans.

Thanks to everyone who corrected my statement about financial aid. I, however, had to talk to admissions counselors about my financial situation a few times, so that was where I found evidence that they were aware they would be providing me a near full-ride upon acceptance. My thought process was that they saw the remainder of my application and I wasn’t worth it, which I am not bitter about, and actually makes sense. It was definitely a combination of things about my app that led to my rejection, but I still do think that the counselors, being aware that I had all these issues AND would be a full-ride, didn’t accept me.

I have heard often that if Barnard or Columbia is accepts you, they will do anything to make sure you can afford it, and I still believe that 100%. Don’t let my situation scare anyone, I was just bad at communicating myself to admissions. GOOD LUCK, and again, NEVER let one story scare you from attempting your dreams.
