[] State (if domestic applicant): Alabama
[] School Type: Independent College Preparatory
[] Ethnicity: Chinese (not disclosed)
[] Gender: Female!
[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): ~$40,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None? Being from Alabama?

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores/GPA
[] Weaknesses: I haven’t really received any prestigious individual awards or anything nor do I have a strong record of leadership positions (with the exception of Senior VP);
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Except for my inability to do anything athletic, I feel like I’m pretty well rounded as far as a range of things besides schoolwork. I spent a lot, a lot of time on my supplemental essays and my Common App essay so I think those were strong especially the Why Barnard? one.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’ve applied to a couple but have yet to hear back from any, so I guess I shall never know.

[/ul]**General Comments: **
To all my fellow Barnard girls, can’t wait for next year! And to those who were deferred or rejected, keep your head up! Everything happens for a reason.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]

[] SAT II: Math II 800, Chemistry 790, US History 760, Physics 750

[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A, not offered

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): National Honor Society (Committee), tutoring program
[] Job/Work Experience: Pharmacy
[] Volunteer/Community service: Low Income preschool program, NY Presbyterian Hospital
[] Summer Activities: Vacations
[] Essays: Craptastic. Filled with typos upon looking back
[] Teacher Recommendation: Probably bad, teachers are iffy about me.
[] Counselor Rec: I think it was pretty good
[] Additional Rec: Pretty good
[] Interview: Goodish? I sent a silly followup email that probably made it worse. But I talked nonstop, the woman was nice though c:
[] Supplementary Material: None. I ain’t talented

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NY! [] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public, but has to take entrance exam
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Has to be obvious xD
[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): Under 60k
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None? Family went to college, feminist backgrounds, inspired by family. Willing to pursue interest, well rounded etc. It was bad.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades, tests, supplement recs
[] Weaknesses: Everything else basically. Little amount of extracurricular activities and leadership positions, no hooks. Common app was BS, supplements were kinda BSed and unedited
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: A miracle happened. Or they loved my test grades. Maybe my high school has something to do with it? Or maybe my interview carried me? IDK. I wouldn’t have accepted me.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I did an ED Barnard and EA Northeastern as safety. Only if Barnard rejected me (because they are ED), I would have applied to other ivy leagues and stuff like that.

[/ul]**General Comments: **
Hey there girls! See you all next year!
And if you were deferred, good luck! I’m sure you will make it!
If you were rejected, there are plenty of other schools out there, I’m sure they will be amazing!
Congrats to the class of 2018 for every school out there!

**Decision: Accepted **

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): CR 750, W 800, M 800
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT II: Chem 740, Math II 720
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.21 (weighted - I’m not sure what it is unweighted)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 10 out of 151
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Chemistry (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP European History, AP Lit and Comp, AP Calc AB, Latin III Honors, Latin IV Honors, French VI Honors, Psychology
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): school level awards, gold in the National Latin Exam, National Merit Semifinalist
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Theater (Stage Manager for 3 shows, crew for 1, sound/light tech for 4), Varsity Tennis, National Honor Society, two volunteer related clubs at my school
[] Job/Work Experience: I work at my family-owned independent bookshop and I also write weekly articles for the local newspaper
[] Volunteer/Community service: I spend a few hours every week with a Nepali refugee family who just moved to the States last December
[] Summer Activities: Governor’s Institute on Asian Cultures at UVM summer after sophomore year which led to a two week trip to China this past summer
[] Essays: thought they were pretty good, I spent a ridiculous amount of time working on them
[] Teacher Recommendation: I only read one of three and that one was fantastic - I’m sure the other three were good too. Teachers tend to like me.
[] Counselor Rec: I’m sure it was good, she likes me
[] Additional Rec: My theater director - he likes me, I’m sure it was good
[] Interview: I thought it went well, we talked about a lot of different things
[] Supplementary Material: none - unless you count a resume

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Vermont
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: public
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female…
[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): not too sure but somewhere around 90-100k I think - I applied for FA but may not get it
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): extremely small town in VT maybe? I also have a long history of womens colleges and my grandmother was a prominent woman in Boston politics and she recently died so I tied that in nicely with one of my supplements
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: emphasized my beliefs in women-helping-women, I’m a good writer and spent lots of time on my essays, my grades have always been good, I’m also pretty well-rounded in that I’m not super athletic but I do play one sport fairly well and I do it on the side of my theater experience and academic goals
[] Weaknesses: my interview went well (I think) but I wasn’t quite able to overcome my habit of fidgeting with my hair. Also I got a B in one of my classes junior year and I chose to take an elective this year instead of AP Physics. I also don’t have much in terms of leadership except for being Stage Manager.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My application on paper was very strong. I spent hours drafting my essay/supplements over and over with advice from skilled writers in my family. I also have always had good grades and I test well.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted early action to Fordham and UVM - was going to apply to NYU, Columbia, Harvard, and Wellesley if this didn’t work but thankfully it did!

[/ul]**General Comments: **
I’m so excited for next fall! Can’t wait to meet the rest of you who got in! And to those of you who were deferred or rejected - everything happens for a reason. Trust me. I was rejected from Phillips Andover when I was 14 and I was devastated but if I had gone there, I never would have had the opportunity to travel to China with a great group of people. Stay positive!

@Broadwaybound317… saw ur ECs and I am from nepal   Congratulations! I am considering Barnard in RD :)

Decision: Accepted

[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.6

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): religious club (secretary/treasurer)
[] Job/Work Experience: None
[] Volunteer/Community service: non-profit organization helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds (yo i promise y’all that my volunteer work was not cliche. it was not done for college apps, i genuinely enjoyed my time there and mentioned it in my essay)
[] Summer Activities: research on proteins in cancer cells at local university. other than that I read and spent a considerable amount of time glued to my laptop most summers in hs. last summer i took dual enrollment courses at a community college 10 mins from my home
[] Essays: common app was about accepting my flaws and wanting to help others overcome their insecurity; i received good responses from friends, all thought it was heartfelt. why barnard: an assortment of miscellaneous things that make barnard … well barnard. unafraid: failed suicide attempt, literally cried while reading it. i felt like it represented me though i was afraid that this would paint me as an emotionally unstable teen who isn’t ready for college. community: my high school forming me into the open-minded individual i am today. woman in history: kyla mcmullen
[] Teacher Recommendation: good
[] Counselor Rec: didn’t read, but I’m assuming good

[] Gender: obviously a proud owner of an uterus bby <3
[] Income Bracket: <31,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM i suppose; though i highly doubt that attributes much to anyone’s admission decision at a school like Barnard
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection
[] Strengths: supplements/common app essay
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: emphasized my battle with depression and how i’ve tried to overcome.
[] Weaknesses: test scores i presume, and i cancelled interview at last minute oops.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: strong writing skills, personal supplements

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: In-state safety and Fordham University

Well, my case is a bit different but I figured I’d post here anyway and update in March.

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 1770 (superscored - CR: 620, M: 530, W: 620)
[] ACT: Haven’t taken it - plan to take in February to improve chances.
[] SAT II: Lit: 670, UH: 630
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.524
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 32 out of 400
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): APWH (3), APUSH (3), AP Lang & Comp (4), AP Gov, AP Bio, AP Calc AB, AP Eco, AP Lit & Comp
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP English Literature and Composition, AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP US Government, AP Economics, Journalism/Newspaper, Pre-AP Spanish III, Art History (PLATO, online course)
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar, National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): All of my extras are leadership. Section editor on school paper for three years. Now editor-in-chief of the paper. Class officer of senior class - Historian. Officer of NHS chapter - Historian/Parliamentarian. Chairman (not quite an officer) of a committee in our Student Council.
[] Job/Work Experience: Odd jobs. Most recently at a grocery store as a bagger for about three months and then on support staff at a local haunt attraction for two months.
[] Volunteer/Community service: I’m not sure the total number of hours I have volunteered just yet, but combined with Student Council, NHS and my own separate work at a local aquarium - I’m sure it’s over sixty.
[] Summer Activities: Working to help out my mother.
[] Essays: Pretty awesome. Why Barnard - I consider to be my weakest one. It was about being accepted and being in an uplifting environment. One-hour talk - a black woman who fought for civil rights and how I had her nickname as a child. Unafraid - about my brother having a breakdown last year. Community - growing up poor and having friends like me. I won’t say my Common App one because it’s my favorite and it’s pretty unique - but I got great reviews from it. Apparently it showed great voice.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Rights to read were waived. I had three core teachers and one EC instructor do them. One core teacher I’m sure had a good one, I’m assuming because she’s an English teacher. The other two were paste and copy letters from two kinda lazy history teachers. The EC instructor was probably the best because she really knows and understands me, and she’s very intelligent. Plus last year, a lot of crap was being talked about her and I wrote a letter to defend her and I gave it to her superiors - very bold if I do say so myself.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably mediocre but she has a lot of kids to write for.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: N/A
[] Supplementary Material: N/A

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: English
[] State (if domestic applicant): Texas
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public, only really competitive in the top 15 - 20%, about 1200 kids.
[] Ethnicity: African - American
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket(mention if FA candidate): < 25k
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Single-parent home, first gen (mother only has associates, brother kinda dropped out), URM.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Being consistent in my ECs. Common App essay - showing voice. EC instructor recommendation. Showing interest/being polite to my Barnard rep (over e-mail).
[] Weaknesses: SATs for sure. GPA. Paste and copy recommendations - just one would’ve done. No interview. No other ECs than what I have time for.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was deferred to their Regular Decision pool and I think it was because of my scores and GPA. I plan to improve both of them but I think Barnard is trying to see just how interested I am and if I’m actually going to try a little harder to get in.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’ve only been accepted to TAMU so far but I’ve applied to a couple of other Texas safety schools I should be hearing from soon. And I’m going to RD to other LACs.

[/ul]General Comments: After being deferred, I really fought with the decision of applying to Mount Holyoke during their ED II. (In fact, I still am.) I’m pretty sure if I clean up my Common App some, I could get into there during that time. But I really don’t want to give up on Barnard. I know it fits me and I’m trying to go into Journalism so what better place than NYC? I pushed all of my apps to RD for Barnard so I’m really hoping I hear good news in March.

**Decision: Accepted

General Comments:
not really

Hey guys, are accepted students required to send in midyear reports?

Yep! We have to send both our midyear grades and our final grades. They want to make sure we keep up our grades, etc. I think the letter said something about “contingent on your successful completion of your senior year” or something.

[ *]Summer Activities: Cambridge College Programme at Cambridge University, UK, counselor-in-training at a sleep away camp
[ *]Essays: Common App (about my experience with a speech problem in my early years and how it influenced my ability to speak publicly today), Why Barnard (I like the focus a women’s college can provide for education in a STEM subject, location is ideal when compared to other women’s colleges and especially with what I hope to have a career in), Fictitious or Historical Woman (Rosie the Riveter and her unintentional role as a feminist icon in the 20th century)
[ *]Teacher Recommendation: Excellent and personal
[ *]Counselor Rec: Excellent
[ *]Additional Rec: Excellent and personal. I had this teacher for three years before she left the school.

[ /list][ b]Reflection**
[ *]Strengths: Essays, extracurriculars
[ *]Weaknesses: Test scores/GPA
[ *]Why you think you were accepted: I showed very strong interest in Barnard specifically, not in just using it as a way into Columbia. I founded a Feminist Club which aligns very closely with Barnard’s goals, and I made sure that where I wasn’t proficient, I made up for in extracurriculars. I’m Hispanic and from a state where Barnard has significantly fewer applicants. I took the most advanced classes available to me, and my school is known for having the best IB program in Florida.
[ *]Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere else; all other applications will be retracted before I find out.

[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really have no idea why I was deferred. I guess we’ll find out in the spring. I thought my stats were good.
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Fordham

[ /list][ b]General Comments: Im really bummed about being deferred and worried about my future. This makes me nervous and disappointed in myself. **

You’re an amazing candidate. Please don’t let a deferral make you feel disappointed. Instead, you should be proud that you’ve reached this far. There are so many amazing colleges that would be salivating to have you in their class! Remember that and don’t let a college acceptance/rejection define who you are or make you feel less about yourself!

**Decision: Accepted **

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): CR: 680 M: 760 W: 760
[] ACT: 33
[] SAT II: N/A
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.28 (My school only does weighted GPA, and the highest I believe is an 4.8?)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 23 out of 266
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 4 on AP Lang and Comp, but I didn’t report that score to Barnard
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calculus AB, AP Physics C, AP Literature and Composition, AP Japanese, AP Art History, Wind Symphony III
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Commended Student, National Honor Society, Japanese National Honor Society, Tri-M Music National Honor Society, Varsity Letter of the Arts in Marching Band and All-School Musical

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Marching Band (Field Captain, Low Brass Section Leader 12) for 4 years, Stage Manager for All-School Musical (Head Stage Manager 11, 12) for 4 years, Japanese Club (Officer 9, 10, 11 /President 12) for 4 years, Yearbook (Editor-in-Chief 11, 12) for 4 years, Gay-Straight Alliance (PR 9, 10, 11, 12) for 4 years, Jazz Band for 3 years
[] Job/Work Experience: N/A
[] Volunteer/Community service: During the summer I volunteered every day for a few weeks at a summer camp for differently abled children. I absolutely loved it; we would become someone’s best friend for the day and make sure everyone was having fun.
[] Summer Activities: I had taken summer school for the past 3 summers to get myself ahead in school, so I didn’t have time for long summer programs.
[] Essays: I think they really showed the admissions office who I am and what I stand for. It’s clear that I love Barnard for what it is, and definitely not as a “back door to Columbia.”
[] Teacher Recommendation: I had recommendations written by my AP Language & Composition and Elementary Math Analysis Honors teachers from junior year. My AP Lang teacher has known me for 4 years because she’s also the advisor for GSA, and she’s like a mother to me, so I was really confident in her recommendation. As for my second recommendation, I was planning on getting my Wind Symphony director to write my second recommendation, but I was told I should probably provide another core academic teacher’s recommendation. I waived my rights to see the recommendations.
[] Counselor Rec: I’m sure my recommendation was fine, though my guidance counselor and I aren’t very close.
[] Additional Rec: My third recommendation was written by my Wind Symphony director, who’s been incredibly supportive of me since freshman year. He’s the one who encouraged me to switch from flute to euphonium, and it’s one of the best decisions I ever made in high school. He’s also seen me through four years of marching band and stage managing the musical, and knows exactly how much effort I put into the things I love. I’m confident that he wrote me a very good recommendation.
[] Interview: I was pretty nervous and I don’t think it was the best ever, but the interview isn’t designed to hurt applicants, so it only could have helped me.
[] Supplementary Material: N/A

[/ul] Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Taiwanese
[] Gender: Female

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Strong leadership, unique interests, and I’ve definitely shown Barnard how I’ve challenged myself to to better.
[] Weaknesses: Essays (I could’ve worked a little more on them), grades in Science/Math, SAT score in CR
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really felt like Barnard is the place for me, and the admissions committee saw that in my application.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: None, I pulled my Northeastern application before decisions came out, and I didn’t apply anywhere else.

[/ul]**General Comments: **I feel like I really showed how passionate I am about the things I do, through my activities, my teacher recs, and my essays. Also, there wasn’t a space for this, but I thought I’d mention that my intended major is Art History!

I know this is a little late, but I thought this would be helpful for Regular Decision applicants. Good luck to you all!

[] Strengths: SAT scores, grades, extracurriculars, recommendations
