I’m applying! And I will have applied in 30 minutes or so. I’m from the dirty jerz. holla.

I’m from Dirty Jersey as well :D

hi! i’m from hanover, nh applying RD for linguistics/psychology/pre law

I’m not completely sure of what I want to major in, but as of now my top three are Classics, Comparative Lit, and English… I really wanted to do Psychology as well, but I know a lot of that is touched upon in Literature courses. What is everyone else’s prospective majors?

Just thought I’d share something.
My interviewer mentioned she had met some ‘really amazing girls’ through her interviews, and I was really curious, so I asked her about them.
- One girl wanted to be a museum curator. She talked in-depth about all the museums around the world like she had actually visited them(she hasn’t) and talked about how western museums differ from Chinese ones, and how SHE would improve the Museum system, and how SHE would manage HER own museum, etc
- One girl translated comic books.
- One girl had this AMAZING resume, and when my interviewer asked her about each of her achievements, she could talk in-depth about all of them. And wach of them was an amazing achievement. My interviewer didn’t elaborate what achievements in particular.
- They all had a very wide range of interests.
- A lot them were talented in absolutely everything.
- One girl was an assistant to Henry Lee (the forensic scientist) for two weeks during his visit to China during the 2008 Olympics.
- “They knew exactly what they were going to do with their future.” were her exact words.

So to sum it up, being passionate about something in particular and knowing a lot about it can be very luring to schools, especially if it is uncommon like ‘being a museum curator’ and ‘translating comic books’. Even better if you have plans for your future, and you have your own ideas about how things should run.

But a lot of us (like me) aren’t that sure of their futures, or even what to major in…but during the college application process, I think it would be better if we gave the impression we HAD an idea. And very good ones too.
Always keep in mind that this is only the admissions process. You can always change your mind when you find something doesn’t really suit you-in the future. Like my interviewer majored in Chemistry all through college, and basically lived in the lab. But right up till she graduated and went looking for a job, she found that it wasn’t her thing. So she altered to Marketing, and found that she loved it, and took some marketing courses part time. And now she works in Marketing.

Hope what I said makes sense…and was at least a little bit helpful:)

Wow, there are some amazing applicants!
I’m an RD applicant as well, and I’ve found the deeper into the admissions process I get, the MORE I want to go to Barnard. However, I’m definitely not toting those kind of stats.
I’m pretty sure I want to go into magazine work. Perhaps, Creative directing. Not sure. So, for right now, I am a potential Art History Major.

My interview was over the phone, because there weren’t any alums in the houston area.
It was pretty good. I got A LOT of info on the school and she was really kind. My advice is to think of it as a conversation and it will be super easy. Don’t worry about your interviewer grilling you…it’s not like that AT ALL. Also, I’ve noticed that every student that I’ve randomly contacted at Barnard for more info has been extremely kind and helpful. (Not just students in the admission office, but random ppl off the website). I’ve never met a group of people who seem so willing to help others. I really enjoyed that!

inconspicuous - I feel the same way, about never meeting people who were so willing to help you until I started contacting people from Barnard. It’s incredible.

Those girls seem amazing! I already went through my interview and wrote all my essays, and my stats aren’t anything over the top at all, but I hope that admissions can see how passionate I am about writing and dancing. Ahhh I’m so nervous! This 4 month wait is going to kill me.

Prospective majors: Economics~

@inconspicuous.s.n
“I’ve found the deeper into the admissions process I get, the MORE I want to go to Barnard.” Me too!!! I actually feel that Barnard is the EXACT fit for me now~:)

I’m from SoCal, applying RD 2 :)

I’m still waiting for an interview - it’ll have to b conducted after i submit everything =_=
Anyways, I hope my interview works out because she sounded busy & stuff…
I want to double major in English & communications - but not very sure.
My stats rn’t that great either SkittleRose, but i hope i can express my passion too-

Good luck with the interview Mikeye! I was thinking about majoring in Communications too~and when I googled it, there was this article titled ‘Communications Major: The Art of BS’…
My stats aren’t great either. Esp. my SAT scores, those are the most terrible part of my app…hope my Toefl can make up for it, if they consider Toefl scores AT ALL.:(

The funny thing is, I feel like my Barnard essays really speak in a way none of my other essays do.

Katy3028- My stats are definitely not amazing, but I also feel like they don’t have to be. The weird thing is, I feel like people who are fully immersed in the arts in high school have less…beef to put on their apps. For example, my sis was in debate all four yrs of high school and had so many awards for her Brown app, that she couldnt fit any more in.
When it comes to my theatre stuff, there aren’t many awards to be put down because all we have is one competition every year. Mostly shows and stuff. My SAT scores are okay in comparison to the median, but I feel like my EC’s are what really speaks for me the most.

Mikeye0- thats so awesome what your planning to major in. I was considering it, but English four has discouraged me a bit.

SkittleRose- I’m really nervous too. My apps not done yet. I putting on the finishing touches, but I hope we all get in!

I feel like the Barnard supplement was the easiest for me to do because I know I really, really want to go to this school more than anything right now. I’m doing final editing for the next two days, ahhh! I’m so scared I’ll find something wrong with it after I hit submit.

What are some of everyone’s hobbies? I’m a dancer and a writer.

Choir singing, dancing, debating, translating English novels and writing…very amateur in all though:( I also love Biology and literature:)
I hate that my school doesn’t even have a single sports team…cause I really liked our school’s Taiqi and Hurdling classes. Top in class for both:)

Haha that sounds like a lot of fun though. I enjoy translating Latin poetry :] What other languages do you know? Congratz on being top in class for both! I’m not familiar with Taiqi… what is it?

@inconspicuous & SkittleRose-- my standardized test scores aren’t something to rave about either. However, my G.P.A., and EC’s should make up for it. :)

I have a few more supplements to finish up before the RD deadline.

Hobbies: Legislative/Parliamentary Debate, Forensics (extemporaneous speaking, impromptu, and oratory,) Mock Trial, Student Congress, Model UN, literature, and lastly, U.S. and European History.

@SkittleRose
Just Chinese and English… Translating Latin Poetry sounds fun too!
Taiqi is actually “Tai Chi Chuan” a type of slow martial arts that everyone can learn:) Old people especially enjoy it. [Tai chi chuan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Tai chi - Wikipedia)
There was a performance of it during the Opening of the Olympics last year…I think.

I think my Ec’s are okay-ish to good.
I do theatre, basically. And community theatre. Ive done other stuff too, like Debate and FBLA and chess, but I don’t remember my awards and these were done only freshman and sophmore year. I feel like my participation in those is a bit…besides the point. I didn’t pursue officer positions in those clubs, like I did in theatre. Also, I feel like if I’m supposed to be selling myself, so it’s best not to put down clubs I participated in for a short time, and then opted out of…

Hobbies: Writing. Drawing. Reading. Theatre. Photography. Dance (Not nearly as strong as some)…jeez, I never realized how fine arts centered my life was until now, haha.

My GPA is meh…but I think I have a few really strong points, so we’ll see. I think my essays and recs will be legit, and my Ec’s may help me out. Also, my career prospects are extremely narrow…so thats good. I want to be a creative director of a magazine. What about you guys?

What did you guys write your supplements on? I’m still jogging my brain about the one about routines and issues. I think I’m going to write about school reform…inspired by Chicago school reform. I’m still writing and were so close to the deadline!

@CM
You’re so lucky you get to have Forensics at your school. I was really excited about joining a team in high school only to realize my high school didn’t offer it :[[[

@ Katy
I remember that opening last year! It was fantastic… I was on the way to my friend’s Sweet Sixteen and we were watching it in my purse in the car via portable TV, hahaha.
I would love to learn one of the martial arts one day… I never had time though since I danced all the time.

@inconspicuous
I guess it would still be okay to list it in a longer resume you send in/attach on Common App. But everyone knows what a huge time committment theatre is. My life has pretty much revolved around art too–mainly writing, dancing, and playing the piano. I’m also really into Latin to the point where some of my thoughts come to me first in Latin before they do in English… strange, strange things. Barnard will definitely appreciate you dedication to theatre and the fine arts, and I think that makes you a really strong applicant in general. I wish I had done theatre and dance during high school, but both are such big time committments, and I ended up choosing dance.

I ultimately hope to become a professor who writes lots of poetry on the side. Writing is what I really, really want to do, but I also enjoy communicating with others who love words as well. But we’ll see what happens… maybe I’ll end up as a Latin translator or at a publishing firm

My routine daily was writing in my journal.
My issue was about wartime, although I wrote another one on human trafficking so I might just use that one… what do you guys think?
And I wrote about the fox from The Little Prince <3

Perhaps, you could write about whichever issue that’s closer to you. You’re interest will automatically shine through moreso. I’m currently drafting mine. I actually did attach a longer resume to my common app, as well.

I think the Latin thing is brilliant, and would make you a pretty interesting applicant, in general. I would highlight that in your essays, in a non-hoity toity, i-go-to-private-school kind of way. I think it could easily come off like that, simply because it’s Latin and not something common. Tread lightly. Otherwise, I think the whole translation thing sounds really intersesting.
I’m stilling thinking of a routine. XD I shouldnt be on CC but it’s so addicting!!!
My sis already made it into Brown, and still regularly checks the boards. haha :)

Looking back on my application, I should probably have written something about Latin… although in my prospective major essay, I wrote about learning Latin. I ended up writing my extra curricular short answer on writing and being EIC of the literary magazine this year cuz writing is like… I don’t know. Sacred to me? It’s strange how I feel about it, and I figured even though not a lot of people know Latin these days I should have highlighted that instead, but I knew that’d be selling my writing short… so. Although basically all my awards come from Latin related things, and I wrote a blurb about it in the additional info section and one of my recs is from a Latin teacher… so hopefully something comes out of that

CC really is addicting. I finished everything last night and I’m in heavy editing mode right now.

Maybe your routine could be something really, really insignificant like making yourself tea or coffee, or what you do before bed, who you talk to everyday? Maybe you could write about what shoe you put on first and why, hahahaha. I feel like something like that could work well.

Good luck!
