I know Freeborn Hall is entirely substance free, but are ALL the residences smoke-free?

Yes, all dorms are smoke-free. It is California, after all. You can smoke outside, 25 feet away from any major door, vent, or window. Of course, not everyone follows this to the letter. Pot smoking on the porch or outside is not uncommon, especially when people know the R.A.s are not around.

So I basically decided to go for a triple (to save money) in one of the units. I prefer a social atmosphere rather than a quiet one. I'm pretty much a music blasting, doors open type of person. Which unit is best for me? And what are some of the pros/cons to each units?

The floors, buildings, and units change each year with the students... I think Unit 1 is the most centrally located and convenient. Unit 2 is furthest from campus, and Unit 3 is right on Telegraph. The rooms are pretty much the same except in the mini suites.

Avoid Bowles.

I would go with the Unit 2. Unit 2 was renovated recently, and unit 1 was renovated before unit 2, so unit 1 appears a little old when compared to unit 2. I wouldn't go with unit 3 because it just appears shabby and old. However, if distance is a big factor for you, then go for Unit 1 and 3. Unit 2 is only a ten minute walk from campus, and since it is a little bit farther away from campus, it is a bit louder and social. I haven't heard great things about Clark Kerr. One of my floormates said CK was less social and he did not enjoy his time there. Plus, CK is too far from campus. Thus, one of my other friends who lives in CK now is deciding to go with unit 2 next year.

Overall, I would say unit 2 is the best.

Unit 2 is not a 10 minute walk from campus, unless you consider campus to be Dwinelle. It is a 4 minute walk from Unit 2 to the edge of campus.

Is there any way that I will be able to tour these Residence Halls during Cal Day?

there's tours set up... check out the cal day website for the times.

What's my type of dorm (I'm a male transfer btw):

I'm relatively shy individual but likes social environment (kind of contradictory =/). To elaborate more, I like meeting new people but im not crazily hyper about it. ABSOLUTELY HATES loud parties in the middle of night (with loud musics and people laughing in an annoying pitch). I would like it close to campus (5-10 minute walking distance would be perfect; btw I'll be majoring in econ, so it would be a plus if it's close to econ department building).

A/C is a must. I don't care about the size of closet. I really don't give a damn about nice view or crap like that. I don't care about the surroudings but I'd like it quiet during the night (no construction or car sounds).

oh yeah and nice people who are somewhat serious about academics. I don't want any stereotypical frat guys who gets drunk every day and make total ass out of themselves.

Unit 1 Substance Free would probably be best for you.

I thought all the junior transfers were put into Spens-Black before they get assigned any other housing.

Avoid Bowles.

How many dorm rooms share a bathroom? I know at UCLA, 2 dorms share 1 bathroom/shower. Also, how clean are they? Is it true that you have to wear your flip flops while showering??? :[

HAHAHAH hopefully haas, you gin! u just made my day.

^ well wouldnt you want to wear flip flops at any other university while taking a shower? i know i would...lol.

dhl3: I'm not sure you are going to be happy with dorm living... at Cal or anywhere. Good luck though.

most of the dorms i saw at ucla were like at cal... each floor had 2 huge bathrooms on them. the plazas and suites shared a restroom for each 4 people (or something like that,)like the mini-suites at cal do...

I stayed at the International House this past summer. I know you can't stay there until junior year but could anyone give me a comparison between I-House and other dorms. Is it one of the nicest or are there actually nicer dorms. I think my view of dorm life is already somewhat skewed because I lucked out this summer and payed for a double but ended up not getting a room mate so I had it all to myself. Is I-House as good as it gets, or is there actually better dorms.
