Best Dorms at Cal?

Which dorms would you consider the best and why?

Unit 3. Closest to everything, best for anyone who wants a “normal” fun college experience.

clark kerr! they have the biggest rooms. if you’re lucky and get a double it would be awesome. a lot more room than in the units. only problem is that it is somewhat far.

The rooms in Clark Kerr were once classrooms, so they are huge. They have also been recently refurbished so they are pretty nice. However, Clark Kerr is a 15 minute walk from campus. You get use to it, but it kinda sucks not being able to go home and sleep in between classes.

They all have their pros and cons.

Best Overall Location: Unit 3
Best Dining Commons: Clark Kerr
Best for Studying: Foothill
Best Maintained: Unit1/Unit2 Minisuites ONLY
Largest Rooms: Unit 3 Suites ONLY (Beverly Cleary)

Ok room size/maintenance isn’t going to matter very much, the differences aren’t that big. What does matter is the kind of people around you and it’s pretty different in all the dorms. Lemme break this down for you:

Units: normal people, every major, want to have a fun normal college experience, very easy to meet people/make friends
Foothill: the people who choose to be here know that it’s engineering/science major dominated and that there is much less socializing/much more studying here than anywhere else. you can figure out what the racial breakdown here would be.
Clark Kerr: atheletes and people who wish they didn’t live there
Stern: girls who’s parents force them to live here and people who get stuck there and want to get out

clark kerr

So accurate it’s creepy.

half of clark kerr is good. The other half is a freaking dungeon that isn’t even completely finished. Under construction… for a long time.

There’s not a “best dorm” at Cal. As you can see everyone has different perspectives on what is the best. It really depends on what your preferences are.

Quoted for Truth

Also, to be honest Bowles and Stern (and Hillside, the closer part of Foothill) are actually the closest dorms to campus.

Unit 4 (Bowles, Stern, and Foothill) as well as CKC all have the biggest dorms, though Bowles gets you the best area per dollar ratio.

I was wondering… Since the assignments are lottery, you have no control over what you pay??? Unit 3 triple is around $11600 while clark kerr double is $17000!! That’s 6000 dollar difference! So I could be forced to pay 6000 more if lottery assigns me to it?

Pretty much. You gotta be pretty unlucky to get assigned to CKC. It’s nice and all, but really expensive for a place that’s much too far away. You could find apartments around there for cheaper. They do have better food than crossroads though I guess and you might meet a buttload of freshmen athletes, which is pretty cool…
But you don’t want a triple in the units either. Especially Unit 3, which is a little bit smaller than U1 and U2 in my opinion. It’s not worth it to be in a triple unless you gel well with your roommates. (I’m living in one right now and one I’m okay with one but the other one just constantly lives in his own b.o. and I’m talking about the smell you get after a good long hard workout…except he doesn’t work out.)
The best dorm honestly is U1, Foothill Hillside, U3. Each are close to campus and U1 and U3 in particular are near easy food access places, although I guess Foothill has Northern Ghetto. Problem is a lot of people want U1 and U3 too. U2 is fine, just gotta walk some more though.

What are the pros and cons of Units 1, 2, and 3?

You tell me that when an entire bathroom is shutdown because a toilet exploded **** all over.

And the uphill walk can either be a benefit or a pain in the ass depending on who you are.

Clark Kerr residents have to climb a bigger hill, but the slope is gentler.

Unit 3 is the best because it’s social and close to campus and everything fun…

How loud do the units get? Does it make it hard to study?

Noise isn’t that bad. Just study in your room and buy noise canceling headphones if it actually starts to annoys you … you’ll like the constant activity around you all the time and it’ll never get boring :).

What do people think of Telegraph Commons? Especially with room rates (I can’t seem to find rates on their site).
