**** official brown u 2016 transfers ****

Thought I would start one! If you’d like to share where you’re transferring from and reasons you’re hoping to transfer

Good luck to all the transfer students!

I go to University of Pennsylvania and am thinking about Brown. I study Near Eastern Studies at Penn and would like to go to Brown’s Egyptology dpt. The only thing I’m worried about is having to retake standardized tests. My ACTs are great in the reading and grammar sections, but a mess in science and math. Other than that I feel like an ideal fit. I was able to get into one ivy league with those crap scores. Is transferring from ivy to ivy easier than from another school? Thanks.

@malpal97 Their Egyptology Department looks amazing :o
Yeah I’m retaking the ACT this December and its killer trying to study for that again and also do college work.
I’ve heard its difficult because they focus alot on why you want to transfer and what Brown has to offer over your current school and sometimes that hard to explain if you’re already at an amazing program.
I’m trying to get into a language dept that isn’t offered at my school and Egyptology at Penn definitely falls under that category as well so I’d say you’re reason for transfer makes sense

Transferring from an art school because I want to focus on their literary arts and entrepreneurship program. Much like malpal97, My ACT is good in english and reading (34, 33) but just horrid for science and math. I’m probably going to retake. My college GPA is a 4.0, but a 3.8 for HS.

Transfering from top LAC (hint western mass). I want to study CS at Brown. My CS at current college is fine but alumni and industry connections are non-existent.
Also question: I’m currently a sophomore, so when transfering I should be a junior at Brown right? Can I apply to be a sophomore instead? I don’t mind repeating the same class year (I want to stay in school as long as possible lol)

Lol you might be able to!! I think it just depends on many credits you have- if they don’t accept all of them, you might end up with a sophomore status. I feel you though, I feel like an extra year is actually great cause you’re behind but at the same time way ahead of your game.

Hey everyone! I just transferred into Brown this past semester and it was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life and I could not be happier. Good luck with your applications!

PS PM me if you guys have any questions about Brown!

Hey guys! All of you seem to be talented individuals, I wish you guys the best!
I’m a Freshman at Emory University and am looking to Transfer to Brown for their Public Health Concentration. (The closest thing Emory has to a public health undergraduate major is a global health minor)
I’m really interested in the in depth Public Health related curriculum Brown offers
is anyone else looking into this particular concentration?
I feel as though it maybe a long shot but it’s worth a try, right? haha

College GPA: 4.0 (Pre-Med Focus)
High School GPA: 3.87 (UW) 4.2 (W)
SAT: 2190 (2210 Super-score… if they even super-score lol)
Extracurriculars pretty solid: mainly research, clinical volunteering, and residence hall involvement
I’m nervous about my essays but they should come out alright
Recs should be fine

I retook the ACT again in December and got my scores back but they are still on the lower half for the Brown average (math kills me). Not sure if I should retake it since major isn’t math/science related… still feel like Brown wants their students to be well rounded. My high school math grades don’t really help and I haven’t taken a math class (yet) in college… What do you guys think?

@misfits2123 I feel like if your ACT is a 30 or higher than you should be fine

@Kraz4CocoPuffs Its a 29, 30 if they super score but still… should I retake?

@misfits2123 I would retake it; it will only help you if you do retake and perform better

I am thinking about applying for transfer this cycle, but am unsure if I should wait until the next cycle because I need to retake the ACT. In English and Writing, I had a 35 and 33, but science and math brought my cumulative score down to a 29.

However, I have a good GPA (3.766) (one B) with a strong high school record, unique background, and STELLAR EC’s and writing supplements. I also have very specific reasons for transferring and Brown is the only university that can provide what I am looking for. What do you guys think? Decent chance, especially since I in no way need any financial aid? Or would I be better off waiting?

Would love to chat with some of you other prospective transfers!

Hey guys! Sophomore now but applying likely as a sophomore for next year.

Currently at NYU Tisch in the Film program and, though I’m doing well, I don’t want to go into the film industry. Plus I have a lot of issues with the program and its participants and NYU as a whole, and I’d love to really LEARN about the world and not just produce projects without real guidance. Minoring in an interdisciplinary program called Science and Society and I LOVE IT. Very interested in health and society and the life sciences in general and approaching them with an interdisciplinary and creative mindset. I do a lot of research in that area in my spare time and, as I said, really love it and finally made the decision to completely switch my career path.

College GPA: 3.85
HS GPA: 4.07 weighted, 5 APs, honestly didn’t work to my potential in HS. the college structure suits me better.
SAT: 2150; SAT II: Bio-E 760, Math I 710, 5s on AP US AP Bio

Current courses: opical Seminar: Emerging Diseases, Calc I (took in hs but didn’t take AP), History of Western Art I, The Art of Sound (film history), Pre-Production Colloquium (1 credit film)

Recs: from bio-anthro professor and editing prof, should be good, did well in both and participated and blah blah

ECs:
– Competitive Club Ultimate Frisbee Team
– Nationally Qualified 57kg weight class Powerlifter (strength sport kind of like olympic weightlifting)
– Photojournalist and Writer for The Odyssey (online newspaper, cross-college); tend to produce scientifically minded pieces i.e. the physics behind the swirls of cream in your morning coffee; exercise and the brain
– College radio host freshman year: wrote and hosted classical music show heehee
– had an internship fall semester as a production intern at a doc production company
– volunteer as an inner-city public school financial aid educator and mentor

Work: have to make money over the summer so work typical summer jobs = cashier, hostess, freelance photographer

VERY CONCERNED that the film program is going to hurt me a lot… it’s very intensive and really doesn’t allow for more than one course to be taken outside Tisch per semester… I’ve taken hard, interesting courses that I;ve gotten all As in, but only have 3 real non-film courses to show (intro to sociology, Classics & Cognitive Theory, Global Biocultures: Anthropological Perspectives on Public Health)… the rest are freshman writing, film production + craft + scriptwriting + film history courses.

we shall see. BEST OF LUCK FRANDS

Freshman at Dartmouth, applying as a sophomore transfer. Currently an Applied Mathematics/Computer Science double major. Don’t like how the Dartmouth program is so heavy on theory.I love Brown’s focus on creative applications of computer science. Also tech is very nonexistent here and the recruiting is not as strong as it is for other schools.

College GPA: 3.83 (4.00 in Math/CS)
HS GPA: 3.87 unweighted, 15 APs
ACT: 36, PSAT: 240
ECs:
Youngest intern ever at Apple, previous internship experience at Google and a few startups
Prestigious Dartmouth math scholarship (8 per class)
Few others, volunteer, chess club, etc.

Recs: From Linear algebra prof (topped the class) and Astronomy prof (know him very well)

Can someone confirm whether Ivy --> Ivy is indeed easier? Good luck to all regardless!!

Hi everyone! I’m transferring in Fall 2016 from the M/TS Honors Program at Rockland Community College. I’ll have my associates in Liberal Arts and Sciences: Humanities and Social Science - Honors Track. I plan to major in Art History and minor in English. Not sure if I have a shot because of my high school record, but I applied and I’m hoping for the best!

GPA is currently a 3.94 (I plan to get it to a 3.96 by the time I graduate)
Bulk of my courses are honors-level
Member of Phi Theta Kappa
Vice president of the Inklings (Medievalist club)
Eucharistic minister for sick/homebound
Interned at non-profit arts center

My HS transcript is certainly not on my current academic level.
It’s like your average “good” student, with some B’s here and there.
SAT composite was a 1760
5 in AP 2D Design
Member of HS step team for all four years and the captain of it during senior year

If only we could rewind 6 years and tell ourselves what we know now! Best of luck to everyone!!

Hello! I’m applying to fall admission 2016, currently studying in University of Washington. First-year student here, but the school policy made me to sophomore. I am taking the first year Physics honor and Math honor track with junior Astronomy and several other courses.

GPA: last quarter was 3.83/4.00
Organizing a supporting education program in Bejing, China (where i am from, haha)

High school was great, but it’s in China. I am guessing the admission office will not count that much.
3APs self-studied.
ACT 29. Not good at English and reading.

Truly want to transfer out from UW, since the courses registration restrictions are too many, can’t really take what I want here.

Best Wish to Y’all

@EmRaeee so true, but I’m actually very happy with the mistakes I’ve made and all that I’ve experienced bc of them cause now they’ve led me here. Best of luck!!

College:
College GPA: 4.00/4.00 over 53 credits
Taking 15 credits this semester, expecting straight A’s again
English major and Classics minor
Made Dean’s List, President’s Honor Roll, and Provost’s Honor Roll every semester
Will need Financial Aid
Currently at a university ranked around #50
No AP credit

HS:
Went to a religious high school that had a dual curriculum in secular studies (math, English, etc) and religious classes (Jewish stuff like Gemara and Mishnah).
Secular Studies GPA: 5.07/4.30 W and 3.99/4.00 UW
Jewish Studies GPA: 3.97/4.30 W and 3.86/4.00 UW (with upward trend)
I had on average 18 classes a semester in high school due to the dual curriculum.
School did not offer any APs, so I only took one AP (English Lit) after self studying - I got a 4.
School did not rank.
I was accepted to my current university through an Early Admissions program, which let me skip 12th grade. So I only went to high school for 3 years.

SAT: 2220 (770 CR, 760 W, 690 M)
ACT: 32 (36 E, 34 CR, 32 M, 27 S)
Did not take SAT Subject Tests ever

College Extracurriculars:
Reporter for School Newspaper, Internship at the Mayor’s Office in a Nearby City, Paid Peer Tutor at the University, On the Committee for Programming at the Hillel on Campus, Member of University’s Grievance Committee, Note-Taker for Office of Disabilities at the University, Coach for a Little League Sports Team on Sundays, Social Director for the Condo I Live in, Founding Member of University’s Classics Table, Founding Member of University’s Fantasy Sports Club

Recommendations: Two professors I’ve taken twice each (one is an English professor and one is a Math professor). I went to their office hours a lot so they know me quite well, and I received A’s and A+'s from them both, so I think the letters will be strong.
