Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Rank, Pretty good extracurriculars
[] Weaknesses: SAT score, Almost no awards, Asian Male
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I HAVE NO IDEA why I was accepted. Asian Male. College of Engineeering. Not even a 2200 or 2300 SAT score. Not even valedictorian. I. am. dying. right. now.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Cornell(!!), RPI, WPI, Northeastern; Waitlisted at: University of Pennsylvania; Rejected by: MIT, Stanford [/ul]

General Comments: Just overall SHOCKED. My heart was POUNDING when I clicked the link to see the decision. I have a hard choice to make!

Decision: Rejected

Objective:[ul]
[] ACT: 32
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 11/400
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5-environmental science and lang, 4-US History
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Psych, AP Spanish, AP Lit, forensic science, creative writing, precalculus, band
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): spanish club (historian), marching band (clarinet section leader), symphony orchestra, pep band, art club, french club, asian culture club…(I didn’t list all of these on app, but I can’t remember which ones I did…)

[] Volunteer/Community service: Spanish tutoring, secretary of teen volunteer group at public library…70 hours from National Honor Society involvement
[] Summer Activities: Marching band, mainly
[] Essays: I thought my common app essay was really good, and I thought my supplement answers were pretty good, but they probably lacked that “wow” factor.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One good, one great albeit probably slightly generic…
[] Counselor Rec: Good, I hope? I’m not especially close to my counselor.
[] Interview: I thought it was all right. It was over skype, and my interviewer went to my high school, so he spent probably five minutes asking me for my schedule, mainly so he could see which teachers we have in common. :)

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Michigan
[] School Type: Average Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: 60-70k

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:Hmm. Probably my common app essay.
[] Weaknesses: No hook at all
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Honestly…I think I lacked passion for Brown, and it showed in my supplement essays. I mainly applied just because I could, and because I wanted to see if I could get in, not going to lie! I worked *much harder on my Barnard essays, because I was more passionate about getting in there!
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted into Michigan State and University of Michigan (both in the honors programs) and Barnard. Still waiting to hear from Middlebury.
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: Honestly…I’m slightly disappointed but not as much as some of you all are, and I think that says a LOT. I just don’t think I was supposed to go to Brown! Good luck to everyone, and to my fellow rejectees, I know you’ll end up somewhere great! :D

[] Teacher Recommendation: I’m assuming they’re good! We aren’t allowed to read them, but I love both the teachers who have written me recommendations and have done well in their classes.
[] Counselor Rec: Not sure - probably decent, but our school has 2000 students, so I’m not sure.
[] Additional Rec: I asked my research mentor to send a supplementary letter of recommendation.
[] Interview: BEST INTERVIEW EVER. I had a wonderful time with my Brown interviewer; I ended up interviewing for many schools but none were as interesting and engaging as this one. Even though I’d visited and already loved the school, I learned so much more and got the impression that Brown would be the perfect fit for me - despite not having believed in “fit” beforehand (I feel like human beings are adaptable and we can all really “fit” in at any college). My interviewer knew a lot about PLME through her friends who had been in the program, and she was able to tell me basically everything about the school - she definitely made the most of her time there, and it was great to talk to someone who had been active in the Brown community. We had a wonderful, organic conversation about things ranging from fashion to literature to college fears; this interview bumped Brown to one of my top choices.

[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian-American
[] Gender: Female

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essay, awards, test scores
[] Weaknesses: could have taken more AP exams, got a few Bs my junior year
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Who knows! I was definitely disappointed, especially because of PLME, but oh well, there’s still a glimmer of hope.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Dartmouth, WashU (full-tuition), Rice (merit scholarships), UVA, Cornell (likely); Waitlisted at Northwestern, Hopkins, Brown (PLME), Columbia, Duke; Rejected at Princeton, Yale, Penn (LSM Vagelos), Stanford (EA); Waiting for Harvard, Amherst, and Williams

[/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to everyone who was accepted, and to future applicants who are reading this - do the best you can with everything, but know that there is also a certain degree of randomness to the process. Good luck!

]Decision: Waitlisted[/size]

[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted at USC, UMich, UMiami, Northeastern, Fordham, Rutgers. Waitlisted at Tulane. Rejected at Harvard and Yale

[/ul]General Comments:

Decision: Rejected

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t submit
[] ACT: 29

[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): National Novel Writing Month Winner for 3 years, Piano 4+ years, Violin for 2 years, Choir member, etc.
[] Job/Work Experience: None, other than child caretaker
[] Volunteer/Community service: Some work through my community through church, food donation organizations, missions trip, and so on. Not a lot, though.
[] Summer Activities: N/A
[] Essays: Common Application wasn’t the best; I ended up writing a better, second version, but by then I had already submitted my application. The supplements were better. Maybe 7/10.
[] Teacher Recommendation: My teacher recommendations were excellent, as far as I know. Particularly for my geology teacher!
[] Counselor Rec: I think it was okay, but probably nothing spectacular.
[] Additional Rec: None
[li] Interview: It went okay, I thought. I think the fact that I’m quiet and a pretty bad conversationalist affected it badly, but overall it was just your kind of typical, what-do-you-like-about-Brown conversation.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): CO
[] Country (if international applicant): N/A
[] School Type: Home school
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: $50,000-$60,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Most likely my transcript as far as class choices go, and my essays, even if looking back they aren’t as great as I would have liked. I think the reason I was brave enough to try was because of the essays, though.
[] Weaknesses: Everything else? My ACT scores, a few of my grades, extracurriculars/volunteering/etc., and just the fact that I don’t stand out a lot.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Very weak applicant, over all. There’s not really a lot that would benefit them from having me there.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at University of Colorado, Purchase, Fordham University, and Chapman University. Rejected from Boston University and Brown.

[/ul]General Comments: Overall, I really wasn’t expecting a lot to happen (or you know, trying not to), but I thought it was worth a shot. I still think it was. I’m not devastated, though, even though I love Brown. I know there are other places in my future. Congratulations to everyone who was accepted! And to those who were rejected, this absolutely isn’t the end of the road. There are so many other options out there and the process can be very random at the best of times, but just know that no matter where you end up, you’ll be where you need to be.

Decision: Accepted

[] Strengths: Fantastic essays, meeting with a dean (highly informal!)
[] Weaknesses: Low GPA, low ACT score
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My essays were really focused, I met/communicated with my AdCom, expressed a genuine interest in the Open Curriculum
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Tulane University (Merit $), University of Michigan, Santa Clara University (Merit $), Pepperdine University, University of Cincinnati (DAAP, Honors, Merit $)

Decision: Accepted

[] Job/Work Experience: Professional acting
[] Volunteer/Community service: Nothing too big
[] Summer Activities: Studying Spanish (summer school, self study, study abroad)
[] Essays: Quite good. My common app essay was about my arts middle school and how I thrive in a community that values creativity/quirkiness. My supplemental essays were very… interesting!
[] Teacher Recommendation: Excellent.
[] Counselor Rec: Excellent.
[] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: I only had a phone interview, but it went really, really well.

[/ul]Other[ul]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Besides the numbers, I had a really strong focus on education. I think my common app essay really demonstrated that I was a good fit for Brown. My supplemental essays had a very strong voice.
[] Weaknesses: No hook, 9% acceptance rate
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I lucked out. No question about it. I was a strong candidate, sure, but I really just lucked out.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Carleton, WashU, Tufts, Macalester, Grinnell, WashU. Waitlisted Swarthmore. Rejected Yale (I preferred Brown to Yale anyhow).

[/ul]General Comments: Brown has been my number one from the get go. I cried when I got my acceptance. I cried again when I saw the… erm… brown-y… financial aid package. There is a very good chance I end up at Carleton because of financial aid (which was definitely my second choice school so nothing to complain about!). I really hope Brown works out, though.

Decision: Rejected

MIT 2016 <3

Decision: Rejected

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2090 (680CR 680M 730M) First try, didn’t retake, didn’t send.
[] ACT: 30 composite both times, grr! (Best breakdown 29R, 35E, 31S, 29M)
[] SAT II (if submitted): 700 USH, 640 Spanish w/o listening
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.86 (self-calculated - school doesn’t actually put UW GPAs on transcripts. My weighted cumulative one at time of submission was 4.03, 1st semester senior year GPA was 4.48)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): USH (4), Spanish Language (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Latin Exam Gold Medal (9th, 10th, 11th), National Spanish Exam Silver Medal (11th), National Merit Commendation
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): School LitMag (Exec. Editor 10th-12th); Student Govt. (Disciplinary Committee 10th/11th, Class President 12th); Key Club (Co-President 12th); Shield (student ambassador society, helped at school events a lot); member of school varsity XC, varsity soccer, and varsity track teams
[] Job/Work Experience: N/A
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer at public library 10th-12th, Native plant restoration/Beach dune preservation project 6th-12th, Lots of random projects - total 150+ hrs.
[] Summer Activities: Summer after 9th earned A in French 1A course at local community college, Summer after 11th earned A in graduate level Intensive Japanese course at Monterey Institute of International Studies. Had surgery on cleft lip summer after 10th, but didn’t mention that on apps (want to get into college on my own merit, not make excuses [shrug])
[] Essays: Common App was about learning how to knit - sounds awk but strangely fantastic and totally me! 9/10, I think.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Waived right to read both, as per school policy. Classics teacher has taught me every year since 9th grade and knows me well, so I’m sure his was glowing. Precalc was probably pretty generic.
[] Counselor Rec: Also waived right to read. She joined our school just this year so she only had about two months to get to know our entire grade, but she probably had a good impression of me because of the old counselor’s notes and her interactions with me as class president. I’m assuming her rec was good, although not raving.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: About an hour and a half of pretty normally flowing conversation with a few awkward pauses. It was my interviewer’s first time being an interviewer, and my first college interview, so considering that it went pretty well, I think!
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes… but totally not getting any!
[] Intended Major: International Relations (want to double major in IR and Linguistic Anthropology but for the sake of the application just put IR).
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Small/selective private Episcopal. ~50 students per grade. I see you judging.
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: $250,000+ (awk because w/ 6 members in our household, and none currently in college, on paper we seem pretty affluent but in reality we’re not so much)
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): N/A
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Not really any. I’ve got a lot of breadth…
[] Weaknesses: … but not much depth, I guess. Also my ACT/SAT scores are egregiously low considering the rest of the applicant pool.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m not “angular” enough? One guy at my school, however, got into the Brown/RISD program - I am so proud of him!
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted – GWU, NYU, Scripps College; Waitlisted – UCLA; Rejected – Brown University (deferred ED – alas, my dream school no more!), Pomona College, UC Berkeley
[/ul]General Comments:
No uber selective colleges for me, I guess. Brown has been, without a doubt, my top choice ever since I got the chance to visit during Junior year Spring Break! I was really, really disappointed seeing the news, but don’t harbor any bitter feelings now because really, just as success is never final, failure is not fatal. Time to move on for me, and for those of you who were accepted - congratulations!

Decision: Waitlisted

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Overrepresented minority, extraordinarily generic application
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted- USC, Rochester, RPI, Case Western Reserve, Rice, Northwestern. Waitlisted- Brown, Wash U. Rejected- Dartmouth. Still Waiting- Harvey Mudd

[/ul]General Comments: I checked brown after being rejected from dartmouth, and I was expecting a rejection. Being waitlisted made me feel a little better, but I’m sure not holding my breath.

Decision: Waitlisted

[] Summer Activities: See volunteer/community service.
[] Essays: Passable/good? Common App was about how my personality clashes with the way my parents raised me and the perspective I gained from that (pretty much screamed, “Hey, I’m Asian” to be honest). Short answers were about various things I can’t remember right now. Also had to do the computer science academic essay.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Decent. From my physics teacher and psychology teacher.
[] Counselor Rec: Really great! He knows me and my story pretty well and his letter reflected that.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: Didn’t have one.

[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Upper middle
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Counselor rec, ECs, female interested in computer science as a major, essays?
[] Weaknesses: Asian interested in STEM without any outstanding STEM ECs/awards, awards, and when compared to others who are qualified I’m honestly pretty average!
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Like I said, pretty average amongst those who are above average.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted Penn (likely), Tulane EA, UT Dallas, UPitt. Rejected at Yale. Waiting on Harvard but fully expecting a rejection.

[/ul]General Comments: Will be taking myself off the waitlist. I am so excited for the upcoming year and am glad I went with the strategy of only applying to schools I love. It makes every acceptance feel absolutely great, though it does leave one a bit undecided. After some thought though, I’m hoping to join the Penn Class of 2016 if it all works out. I wish all y’all the best!

Decision: Rejected

[] Teacher Recommendation: great, it made me blush
[] Counselor Rec: probably a bit generic.
[] Additional Rec: Great!
[li] Interview: went very well, it made me love Brown even more (which is why this rejection is that much harder)
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, teacher recommendation.
[] Weaknesses: Everything else
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I guess I didn’t stand out, I wasn’t special enough.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected from every place; I guess I’ll just study in the Netherlands then, where every university would be open for me ;)

[/ul]General Comments: Congrats to everyone who was accepted!

Decision: Accepted

Stats posted in BC thread. I want to say that I literally cried, so thankful, so lucky. My test scores weren’t the best…but I had a great interview and everyone (even my Penn interviewer) told me I would do great at Brown. I’m glad they see it, too. I hope you all will do well. My stats btw are pathetic compared to a lot of these people, but ECs and GPA and essays and thoughtful supplements I guess really do matter. Seriously, gonna go cry. So happy. btw - Asian female from CA with sub-par test scores. It can happen. Dreams come true!

Accepted; life is good :D
