**Decision: Accepted/b

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 2250: 690 (CR) 800 (M) 760 (W)
ACT (breakdown): 34: 35 (E) 36 (M) 32 ® 34 (S)
SAT II: 800 (Math Level II) 800 (Chem) 800 (Latin)
Unweighted GPA: 4.000
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A but actually 1/200something
AP: Chem (5), Calc AB (5) - will take Calc BC this year
Senior Year Course Load: IB Diploma
Major Awards: stuff from Latin convention, Perfect NLEs, Mock Trial stuff, Harvard Book Award

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Ohio/National Junior Classical League (O/NJCL), Boy Scouts, Mock Trial, Tennis, XCountry, Yearbook, Trash Talkers (percussion group),
Job/Work Experience: engineering internship, summer 2014
Volunteer/Community service: various stuff (throw in Boy Scouts and OJCL here)
Summers: occupied by activities above
Essays:
- commonapp: wrote about trying out for the musical, getting nervous, then flashing back to mock trial, then coming full circle at the end back to the musical tryout
- Intended major: I said Classics and also Chemistry and related the two.
- Where you’ve lived: I answered in one sentence, stating that I’ve lived in a suburb all my life.
- Community/group: I talked about Trash Talkers and learning how to connect with an audience as a performer (aka “get into the groove” - I think my personality was developed well here)
- Why Brown?: I talked about the “human experience” and compared Medicine and the Classics in that fashion. Basically, I talked about Brown’s “open curriculum” (by saying humanities + STEMM = awesome) but didn’t actually mention that dreaded term. I also threw in a sample class from the course catalog from the Classics dept. webpage.
- factor that led you to this (scientific field): pontificated about research/knowledge and related it to my internship
- concept proud of mastering: why transition metals are colorful in solution --> complex ions and ligands --> connecting the practical and the abstract
- briefly describe courses: in my third year of chem (honors, HL1, HL2), so there
Teacher Recommendation: 3 different teachers (Chem, Latin, History - also my Mock Trial coach)
Interview: the guy was a judge whom I luckily had several connections with. He was also really cool and said he would write nothing but a glowing review even though I was really nervous and not too eloquent.

State (if domestic applicant): Ohio
School Type: Private Catholic
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: > 200k - applied for Fin Aid but am not hopeful of getting it :frowning:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Strengths: well-rounded personality, comprehensive and cohesive admissions file
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I pitched myself as a Latin / classics scholar and I guess they fell for it. I also presented myself as the person who does all kinds of things (athletics, academics, arts).
Weaknesses: WASP (idk if that counts), no actual experience with Medicine
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: checked all the boxes, got lucky
Notes: I couldn’t believe it when my mom called and said she found a cryptic letter from Brown. I knew it was a likely letter right away. I’m not a recruited athlete or anything like that; I just got lucky. Little did Brown admissions know, they’re the only Ivy/top-top-knotch/elite(elitist?) institution I applied to.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: Please only post results using the given format so that this thread can serve as a valuable resource for future applicants. There is another thread provided for discussion, congrats, etc. Non-result posts will be deleted.

Reflection

Strengths: Essays, rank, GPA, leadership!! My essays are probably what got me in.
Weaknesses: Testing, and i’m pretty average imo!

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at STANFORD, Rice, UPenn, UT Austin and USC; waitlisted at UChicago and Brown; rejected at Columbia

General Comments: Don’t fret over college admissions, guys. Give your applications everything you have and just hope for the best. My first decisions were literally all waitlists and a deferral from Stanford; then, I got into 4 amazing schools! You will end up where you belong. If you’re reading this, calm down, you will succeed. Have faith! I hope this helps someone!!

[] Essays: CA was about my emotional journey moving from one school to another—Went through like 20 drafts lol. My guidance counselor said it was beautiful. Brown Supplements: “Why Brown” was decent though said “New Curriculum” instead of “Open Curriculum.”(said Open Curriculum in the follow-up letter of continued interest I sent them after being deferred). Thought my “factors that led you to this field” was very good. (Intended Major: Philosophy) and and I think my “Where have you lived?” worked. These weren’t as good as my supplements at other schools just because they were my first ones though.

Job/Work Experience:
-Cashier at movie theater for 2014 summer.

Volunteer/Community service: I did not even list any on the Common App because it doesn’t help you get into elite schools. But I believe my recommendation writers spoke about the children’s museum that I volunteered at for two years. That was a huge commitment.

Summer Activities: Cashier at movie theater

Essays:
Common App – I chose the “place of solace” topic. My college essay was simple, yet beautiful, authentic, and richly detailed. It is all about my love of going to the library, and by far, it is the best piece of work I have ever written. I think that it is an honest portrayal of who I am, and it exemplifies my love of learning. I had this essay published in a national literary magazine.
Mini Brown Essays –
For the community one, I talked about being a member of the locavore / organic community. I imagine it was quirky.
For the “where did you live” one, I talked about the glorious attractions of New York City.
My “Why Brown” one was honest and likely the best. I talked about the Open Curriculum and how Brown encourages academic adventure.
I talked about wanting to major in French for one of them. I love to travel, so I elaborated on that.

Teacher Recommendation:
One from my French teacher (10/10) - I am a heavy participant in this class and I have been the top student for 4 years. I tutor, I share French literature that I read in my spare time with my teacher, I do research for the class, and I’ve taught a little.
AP US History Teacher (9/10) - I was the top student in this class and I won an award for my efforts. I adore history and I am also very concerned about social issues. He told me that I had the best projects and essays in the class.
Counselor Rec:
I’d give it a 9/10. We are close friends. In the summertime, my school made us fill out a sheet of all our hobbies, favorite media, and accomplishments - so I guess that helped too.

Interview: AMAZING. The conversation flowed like water. My interviewer and I were both interested in languages and international relations.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes

State (if domestic applicant): New York
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM

Reflection

Strengths: My writing and journalism, my grades and scores, my essay for sure, URM status too, choice of major
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I made sure to highlight the fact that I am a published writer. I also think it’s different that I want to study French and creative writing. Make sure your Common App essay defines who you are.
Weaknesses: SAT Math score is on the lower end, but to be honest, I’m proud of it. That’s the best I could achieve. Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I have a singular passion for writing and I want to major in something atypical.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted to 6 Ivy League Schools: Harvard, Princeton, UPenn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown
Accepted: NYU, Fordham, University of Connecticut, SUNY Binghampton, SUNY Stony Brook, Siena College
Rejected: Yale, Columbia, Hunter College, Queens College

Other:
I’m ecstatic! Congratulations to all who were admitted.

I applied to all 8 Ivy League schools and I was admitted to 6. I am not a legacy or a first generation, for those of you who would like to know.
