General Comments:
Congratulations to everyone who got in! For the deferrals, keep hoping! Only a few more months of nail-biting ;)

After a careful evaluation of your credentials, the Board of Admission has voted to postpone a final decision on your application. During the coming months, we will review the materials you have already submitted as well as any additional credentials you may wish to send to us.

By no means should you interpret the Board’s vote to defer a final vote on your application as a denial of admission. The majority of our Early Decision applicants are neither accepted nor rejected, but deferred; and your application remains under active consideration. Our decision means that the Board wishes to have additional time to compare your application with those of our Regular Decision applicant pool. You should know that during the past few years the admission rate for students deferred Early Decision has been consistent with that for Regular Decision applicants.

Please have your school send us the Mid-Year School Report by mid-February at the latest, and be sure to send us information about additional awards, honors, or achievements you may have attained since your Early Decision application was submitted.

Your official admission decision letter has been mailed to you and I ask that you read it carefully, as it contains more detailed information than is possible for us to provide here. If you are an applicant for the Program in Liberal Medical Education, please be aware that this deferral includes your candidacy for that program as well.

It is important for me to reiterate that your application will be considered without prejudice in the spring evaluation of our Regular Decision applicant group, and you will be notified in late March of the Board’s final decision. Please do not hesitate to contact our office if you have any questions or if we may be of assistance to you.

Yours sincerely,

James S. Miller
Dean of Admission

@Alex - When it comes to college applications, I cannot stress the significance of being as genuine and as “human” possible. Amazing students often find themselves stressing over scores, when this happens I believe individuals stop being themselves because a simple number overshadows the other qualities he/she may have. “Chance me” threads are futile; your essay is a very big component of the process and in these threads, people cannot assess that aspect. My greatest advice: BE YOURSELF
@ justink - Yes I am
@ qwerty - No I am not lol

Absolutely, @Labrat5. I thought I had no chance! I now firmly believe essays are a huge, huge, huge component.

Also, just for reference next year, I was NOT contacted for a progress report/first quarter grades. Evidently it has no bearing!

Congrats Pleinelune  Where are you from?

Why would someone who has a 2280 and is the unofficial Val think that he/she had no chance?

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Theatre- participated in over forty productions with various lead roles. I’ve written and directed a full length production and two shorts. I’m involved in founding a Habitat for Humanity chapter at my school, in Junior Classical League (Historicus and Convention Delegate), about to start Mock Trial (Attorney), and I’m a member of my state’s Legislative Youth Advisory Council. [] Summer Activities: See above. Plus university courses
[] Essays: I thought they were pretty nice. Definitely very risky.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One mediocre, one absolutely glowing.
[] Counselor Rec: Mediocre as our counselors don’t really know us.
[] Additional Rec: Theatre director- absolutely glowing.
[] Interview: Okay.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Well “pointed” application. Possibly essays. Obviously not much.
[] Weaknesses: Lack of APs, definitely. My school only offers three and I opted to take university English rather than AP, so I know that got me. I also only have two years of a foreign language.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred: Obviously my application was weak. I also didn’t have grades for any university course I’m taking except the one I did over the summer, so I would bet they want to see those.
[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred: Only accepted to LSU so far, so I need to get to work…[/ul][/li]General Comments:
Congratulations to all accepted. I’m upset of course, but I think my mom’s cried harder than I have so far, haha. I guess it’s time to get down to business on RD apps. The thought of waiting until April makes me ill!

Thanks Labrat5, you too. I’m a US Citizen but living in Europe. Excited to go back.

@billabongboy9828: from reading CC?!

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Science Olympiads (Co-president), Tri-M (Historian), Future Educators of America (Executive Board), Vocal Jazz, NHS (do I even need to bother putting it here? lol), TONS of research!
[] Job/Work Experience: Does research 2 summers in a row count? I guess not since I didn’t list it as “work” on my app
[] Volunteer/Community service: Nothing significant, but my research was unpaid
[] Summer Activities: Research (A LOT), CTY summer before sophomore year, Summer@Brown before junior year :stuck_out_tongue:
[] Essays: I thought they were okay. My dad changed them a lot. My common app was pretty sad, but I ended it in a hopeful tone. Hopefully they didn’t come out too depressing >.< but I thought I did a good job of spinning. My Why Brown Essay was mehh (too much to write in such a small space haha). I chose C for the part where you had to choose… I thought it was okay.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was probably great; the other was probably just okay

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Research, GPA, ACT, generally science-related ECs which shows some focus I guess
[] Weaknesses: Not so much in music (missed all-county by 1 pt >.<), not too many ECs in general
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Essays? Also, the freaking double legacy who’s lazy is the only one who got accepted from my school >.< ■■■
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Tulane with Presidential Scholarship ($25K/year :D)[/ul][/li]General Comments: Time to work on other apps? I was kind of growing skeptical of Brown anyway and this whole double legacy acceptance thing is putting it over the edge. I’m kind of thinking I’m more of an LAC type of girl. ADIOS CC! Time to get to those other apps/ keep my grades up/ other BS. Congrats to those accepted!

[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred: I’m a legacy with great stats, good essays, and good recommendations. My passion for science showed in my essays.
[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred: Haven’t written a word of another supplement. Thank God.[/ul][/li]General Comments: The admit rate for deferral is slightly higher than the rate for RD. There’s still hope!

My mom and I have been somewhat following CC threads for the last few months and I just wanted to say congrats to all accepted Brown ED students! One of my good friends got deferred, so I’m hoping she’ll have more luck come RD. That said, good luck to all deferred/rejected candidates. You all have amazing stats and I’m sure you’ll end up at incredible schools that make you just as happy. I applied to Yale SCEA (we hear back Wednesday) and I’m ridiculously nervous! I guess the thing that bothers me most about this process is that I feel like one day my app could be read favorably following mediocre candidates and I could be accepted…or another day I could be read between the Intel Science Talent Search winner and the recruited swimmer and be rejected…I really believe that no matter how qualified you are, a fair portion of your acceptance is based on luck. Not to diminish my own or anyone else’s accomplishments, that is…I just can’t wait for it to be May 1st and to be DONE with this process!

msxmgd, remember we both got A0 this morning?

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

* SAT I (breakdown): HA. No thanks

 • ACT:33
 • SAT II: I refused to apply anywhere that required subject tests…they killed me
 • Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
 • Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/225
 • AP (place score in parenthesis): 5, 4, 3 on English Lang, Psych and Spanish Lang respectively
 • IB (place score in parenthesis):
 • Senior Year Course Load: AP (Art, Calc, Physics, English, Gov) and journalism.
 • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with Distinction, Congressional Gold Medal, California Arts Scholar

Subjective:

* Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity tennis (captain), a few clubs, formed a student helping student organization. Nothing toooo outstanding

 • Job/Work Experience: I work at a candy store  it’s the best
 • Volunteer/Community service: Quite a bit (as in over 1000 hours), with commitment over the past 4 years
 • Summer Activities: College classes, California Arts Scholar (writing) program, work
 • Essays: Writing is what I do with my life. I haven’t read anyone else’s college essays, but I heard from my counselor that they were the best she’d come across in fifteen years.
 • Teacher Recommendation: One of my teachers forgot to write my letter, so I had to beg my Calc teacher to write one for me at the last minute (literally, on the first of November). So…I don’t know how that came out.
 • Counselor Rec: He seemed to really like me, so I’m assuming it was very positive
 • Additional Rec: None
 • Interview: Fantastic. My interviewer and I had a great time, and I think that he wrote me a positive recommendation.

Reflection

* Strengths: Great academics, substantial extracurriculars, well-written essays

 • Weaknesses: Test scores. I definitely don’t test well.
 • Why you think you were accepted/deferred: Essays, definitely. And hey, the GPA probably didn’t hurt, but I’m a realist. I know that there were so many other applicants with my stats or better.
 • Where else were you accepted/deferred: Other applications? Hellllllllllllll no.

General Comments: I’m a white girl from Southern California, which I thought was basically the kiss of death in the admissions process. But (clearly) there’s no such thing as a lost cause. Good luck to everyone who got deferred, my condolences to those who got rejected, and of course, congratulations to my future classmates!

srry to barge in on this thread-but labrat-can you post your stats or something? Its really rare to get into PLME with lower than 2200-no doubt, you stood out though, so good job!

[] Essays: Wrote about my passions and my true feelings and didn’t stray away from controversial topics, made sure that everything I wanted to say shone in my essays
[] Teacher Recommendation: You can’t judge recs without seeing them, that’s kinda hypocritical…but I got my History teacher and Spanish teacher/SHS sponsor to write recs and they were very enthusiastic and receptive about me asking them
[] Counselor Rec: I was the first person to see my counselor when she first came to our school before 9th grade even begun and I have developed a strong relationship with her…if you are reading this, DEVELOP A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR COUNSELOR. She has been the single most instrumental person in keeping me going throughout the years! Again, can’t judge based on not seeing it
[] Additional Rec: My local Democratic committee’s ex-chair wrote me a rec that I saw and I liked a lot; she has always been there for me and I sought out her help…
[] Interview: Met at a local restaurant with a '10 graduate who asked me about the usual stuff but then we talked about politics and other stuff I like…very nice dude and someone I could see myself chillin with at Brown

[] Strengths: EC activities (my activities were not a laundry list and all things that I have been committed to and given 100%), unique applicant, commitment to the things I cherish and love, and this all shone through from fit to finish
[] Weaknesses: SAT scores, obviously
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred: Because I stayed committed to the things that I loved and I was someone different from the “usual” - do things that you love, dare to be different, take risks
[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred:[/ul][/li]General Comments:

First of all, do NOT ask someone for Chances on CC. People are very misleading and try to get you not to apply. I remember the dozens of people telling me that I had little-no chance because of my SAT scores. Listen to your counselors, your parents, your advisors - they tell you the real story - that SAT scores and statistics are NOT everything.

Believe in yourself, don’t give up or slow down. Stay committed to the things you love and work hard no matter the outcome. I can say that in times when the going got tough in terms of academics, I never gave up and worked for every single point and every single grade.

Also, don’t let ANYONE get you down for being different and unique. Congrats to everyone & good luck in the future!
