**Decision: Deferred **

b**

Objective:
[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 1930, didn’t send it in for an obvious reason.
[] ACT (breakdown): 31C (35E, 26M, 35R, 28S, 10 on writing) Yes, my math score sucks.
[] SAT II: none
[] Unweighted GPA: 3.8
[] Weighted GPA: 4.5
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 41/551, top 7%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5USH, 5EnglishLang, 5AmericanGov, 4 Macroecon
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Psych, AP Spanish 4, AP English Lit, Pre Calc and Trig, AP Euro, Hist WWI/WWII, Forensics, Gym
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
[/ul] High honor roll, AP Scholar, National School Orchestra Award, 2-time Recipient of Division 1 rating in school Solo and Ensemble contest, for viola

Subjective:
[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): String & Symphony Orchestra (section leader of violas 3 years), Debate Team (Secretary 2 years, went to state tournament both years of the team’s existence), Scholastic Bowl (Captain of varsity team 2 years), Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra, Tri-M Honors Music Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honors Math Society, NHS. As you can see, music encompasses the majority of my ECs. I don’t have much time for anything else. Also, my school has no political clubs, and I couldn’t get any clubs started, so my intended major doesn’t coincide well with my ECs.
[] Job/Work Experience: Cashier and Stocker for local farming business all this past summer
[] Volunteer/Community Service: every Saturday since freshman year, I’ve been a volunteer instructor for a local community youth orchestra, which I used to play in. I also play my instrument in a chamber group at various venues around the area.
[] Summer Activities: this past summer, I went to the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) for Political Action and Public Policy. It was the best experience of my life. I sent in an extra supplement about it because I couldn’t fit it in my application. I poured my heart and soul into it.
[] Essays: amazing. Writing is my biggest strength. My CommonApp essay and my supplements were stellar. The only supplement I feel like I could’ve done better on was the Why Brown one, which sucks, because that’s the one you’re supposed to do the best on. Still, 9/10
[] Teacher Recommendation: waived my right to see. They were from my EnglishLang, my Spanish, and my APUSH/APGov teachers. The last one adores me, and I did get to see his recommendation, but it wasn’t as great as I thought it would be. I know my English teacher wrote an excellent one. I’ve seen a draft of it before. Overall, 8/10
[] Counselor Rec: waived my right to see, but generic with a capital G. She barely knows me. 6/10
[] Additional Rec: none
[] Interview: went well. We talked the most about my love for the east coast and my experience at NSLC. Unfortunately, he didn’t go to the school when the open curriculum was first instituted, and like everyone else, that’s why I love Brown so much. I wish I had gotten a younger interviewer. 7 or 8/10
[] Supplementary Material (portfolio, etc.): written supplement about how NSLC changed my life, as mentioned above.
[/ul]

Other
[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: of course.
[] State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: public school, 2,000+ students, very competitive. It should send more kids to Ivies than it does, but everyone always decides to stay in-state because sheltered people live here. Likewise, I don’t fit in here. Like at all. xD
[] Ethnicity: Mexican
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: $70,000-$80,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): underrepresented minority? At least where I live and go to school.
[/ul]

Reflection
[ul]
[] Strengths: essays, teacher recs, genuine love for what I do.
[] Weaknesses: grades, test scores, class rank, lack of ECs related to major.
[] Why you think you were deferred: see Weaknesses. Didn’t stand out from other ED applicants.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: nowhere important yet. Illinois State University is my safety, and I was accepted there. Also, unlike the majority of you, I’ve finished all of my applications. xD I applied to Yale, American, Michigan-Ann Arbor, and Wisconsin-Madison.
[/ul]

**General Comments: ** I was completely honest in this review of myself. And I tried to be as informative as possible. Also, I was absolutely certain I’d get deferred. I didn’t psyche myself up, and I knew I wouldn’t get accepted right off the bat. Still, I think the genuine vibe my application gives off is what kept me in. I’m doing well this year in terms of grades, so hopefully my midterm report will help me in the regular decision pool. Congratulations to all of you who were accepted. You truly deserve it. Also, even though you all seem like very neurotic people, the kindness is clear.
