Subjective:

  • [] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Marching Band (4 years, section leader and drum major), Indoor Drumline (section leader), Badminton Intramural (girls captain) are the main 3, but there were others I don’t feel like typing out
    [

[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered at children’s museum, 30 Hr. Famine (top fundraiser) for world hunger
    [
] Summer Activities: all of the above
[] Essays: I think my common app essay was pretty strong. I wrote about how I have synesthesia and how that alters the way I see the world. For the Brown-specific questions, I focused on how I want to be a creative arts therapist and tried to work that into each answer somehow.
    [
] Teacher Recommendation: I submitted three: one from my AP Language teacher, whom I really bonded with and was probably my favorite teacher of high school thus far; my current Sociology teacher, who wrote beautifully; and my middle school Academically Talented Teacher who I still keep in touch with.
[] Counselor Rec: Submitted two- one from my main guidance counselor, probably generic. The other was from the head of the guidance department who I spent a lot more time bonding with.
    [
    ] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: I thought it went okay, but my interviewer and I had nothing in common, and he was kind of quiet and awkward. Hopefully I steered the conversation in the right directions, though.
    [
] Supplementary Material (portfolio, etc.): Submitted a music portfolio with 3 compositions, a part of the full length musical I wrote, and an art portfolio with some ink sketches and fine art photography

    [] Income Bracket: <$100,000
    [
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First to attend a four-year college

Reflection

[list]
[] Strengths: Portfolios, letters of rec, and writing.
[
] Weaknesses: Definitely my scores and GPA. Good lord.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m pretty devastated. Really devastated. I thought I had a strong application and was truly hoping for at least a deferral, but I guess everything else couldn’t make up for my bad numbers.
[
] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Don’t know yet, this was the first college I heard from.

Gender: f
Income Bracket: high
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection:

Strengths: well-rounded EC’s, good essays, good grades & SAT scores
Weaknesses: no hooks, nothing that really makes me stand out
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: see above. I’m a very solid applicant but i’m not sure there’s anything about me that would make a Brown admissions officer fall in love…
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: waiting on one safety EA app, now to submit 10-11 other applications WOOO HOOOO!!!

General Comments: Not very upset as this is what I expected - in fact, honestly just relieved I didn’t get rejected. Thinking about all the other apps and waiting I have to do now is kind of awful, but I’m still glad i went for ED as brown truly was/is my dream school.

Decision: Rejected - ED

Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8 (I think my essays were pretty strong. That being said, I should have probably added in more details and personalized certain parts of my answers.)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): 9 (All my teachers are really fond of me and my counselor told me that she wished she could have written letters of rec. for other people the way she wrote mine.)

Interview: My interview went quite well. I really enjoyed speaking to her.

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: No.
Intended Major: International Relations
Country (if international applicant): UAE
School Type: IB/IGCSE International School
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: <$120,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None that I know of?

Reflection:

Strengths: I think that my letters of recommendation and my essays were pretty solid. My transcript is also very good.
Weaknesses: I sent two sets of ACT scores, the first set was pretty low and that is the one I initially applied with so I think that might have put me at a major disadvantage. Also, my school doesn’t calculate GPA or rank which might make it difficult to compare me to other applicants. Also, my SAT II scores are exactly amazing.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think that my standardized testing scores really messed me up. I also think that there are certain things that just aren’t offered at my school that made me seem uncompetitive.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:This was my first decision. I am definitely disappointed, but I’m hoping that my future has lots of acceptances!

General Comments: I would have loved to go to Brown since attending Brown has always been a goal of mine, but I’m not devastated by the result. Anyways, I’m just going to work really hard on the rest of my applications so that everything turns out better. Congrats to everyone that was accepted, good luck to everyone that was deferred and to everyone that was rejected: you have so much ahead of you-- don’t dwell on this one thing!

Additional Rec #2: Boss from second summer internship, reinforced points my common app made, and validated my science project as legit

Weaknesses: Test scores, class size (only about 60ish) and low legacy at my school.
Why you think you were deferred: They’re probably looking for better test scores, a consistency in scores and just a general idea of how I fit in compared to the incoming tsunami of 27,000+ RD applicants. If anything might doom me it might be a significantly more difficult senior year curriculum and low test scores.

Additional essay: 9/10 (Spoke about my life in tennis and how I stupidly quit and eventually came back to the game my junior year)

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10/10 Fantastic. I know this English teacher in and out of the class. I was his favorite student according to his family friend. Really awesome guy and we get along fabulously. Plus I worked my ass off in that class haha.
Teacher Rec #2: 9/10 Very strong as well probably. It was my AP Bio teacher whose class was incredibly difficult and I was 1 of 12 people who made an A the first quarter and maintained it throughout the year.
Counselor Rec: 7/10 Pretty nice. I have a solid reputation at my school and she knows it so I imagine it was a good recommendation. Nothing incredible, but certainly nothing below average.
Additional Rec: Nope
Interview: 10/10 Went incredibly. Turned out that the interviewer goes to the same church as my neighbor. We spoke on current events and had a really pleasant time. He told me doesn’t like to speak much and that our meeting would last less than an hour, but we ended up talking for two hours. At the end he said “I should have known you were going to keep me engaged for so long.”

Reflection:

Strengths: ECs, essays
Weaknesses: Average test scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I definitely made it clear that I worked my ass off in high school. My application was also very cohesive in terms of my pursued activities throughout high school and my intended concentrations. I really tried to present the rawest form of myself, and I think I somehow succeeded.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:

General Comments:
It’s a crapshoot, and I am thankful that I ended up getting the decision I wanted. Getting accepted was a dream come true. Not to be cliche, but when people say do what you love in high school and show it off in your application, do it. Your application is trying to convey the story of your life. Turning 17 years into a document is a hefty task. Find your passions, invest yourself in them, and you will have great results whether they are for your number 1 choice school or another school you apply to. I am ecstatic right now.

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App Essay 9/10,
Brown Supplemental Essay 10/10, possibly the best essay I’ve ever written.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10/10 Gov’t AP Teacher. She knows me inside and out. Every personal detail, good trait I have. She knows.
Teacher Rec #2: 9/10 French Teacher. She is a very close family friend, and has watched me grow up from the day I moved to the district in first grade.
Counselor Rec: 8/10 I have a very good reputation in school due to myself being a showman and the expressive kid who tries to be friendly with everyone. It might’ve been a bit generic, but nothing below average.
Additional Rec:What?
Interview: 10/10 The first sentence my interviewer said to me was, “I don’t really care for statistics; let’s just have a chat.” And a chat we did have. We were constantly engaged in a topic that she enjoyed and seemed impressed by the amount of topics that we had a common interest in. We ended up talking for about two and a half hours, but had to stop because it was getting really dark.

* Theater for four years (takes up most of my life)
* Run a small service group
* Forensics competitions for acting

Job/Work Experience:
* Internship in China’s best engineering university for 2 weeks.
* Helped set up internet servers in a poverty and earthquake stricken region in China.

Summer Activities:
* Used last summer to keep healthy, workout, read, etc.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
* Not going to rate my essays because everyone has a different scale for their essays.
* To give you a feel for how my essays were, I spent about 3 months crafting my Common App essay.
* Felt like it was choppy and didn’t do my story justice (had to cut so much of it to fit it into the word count).
* Spent about 2 weeks writing my Brown supplemental. They could have been far better, but I think I showed why Brown was my top choice pretty well.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

 * Teacher Rec #1: Rec from science teacher. Waived my right to see the letter, so I have no idea what it was like.
 * Teacher Rec #2: Rec from my English teacher. This teacher is known to write very extensive and comprehensive letters of rec. Again, didn't read it so I don't know how it turned out.

Counselor Rec: Only met with counselor for 5 or 6 times ever. Didn’t really know me, but he probably wrote a decent letter because he wanted me to get into college.

Additional Rec: None. I only had my 2 teacher recommendation letters and 1 counselor recommendation.

Interview: Not sure how important interviews are in the admissions process, but my interview went decently. Interviewer was very poised, yet made sure to keep the interview conversational and light. Didn’t remain in contact with him after the interview. The whole thing lasted about one hour or so.

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: No

Intended Major: Bioengineering
Country (if international applicant): China
School Type: Private international school in China with American curriculum. High school size of 300-400ish.

Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese national)

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely none. Both my parents went to college, as did my brother. As an Asian male applying from China, I wouldn’t say I’m exactly a minority.

Reflection:

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
* A cup of hard work, a quart of passion, and about seventeen metric tons of luck.

General Comments:

Please keep everything in perspective when you apply to university. Don’t get too stuck on one school because if you get rejected, you’ll cause yourself a lot of pain. Keep your options open even if there’s that one school that you think is perfect for you.
