****official cal poly slo class of 2018 decisions****

thanks @czs1994. yeah i had 10 ap’s total and like 2 approved honors (in addition to like 2 non approved honors). good luck to every1 who applied bme!! and honestly i’d probably pick a school that looks at students holistically rather than purely on gpa and sat/act. Engineering is more than JUST grades!! (tho theyre kinda a significant portion :D)

@coolkat123, I would rethink Cal Poly. Employers love their hands on education and have placed Cal Poly high on their list of schools to hire from. A report today showed their engineers starting at a very high annual salary, and in the past it has been the highest for starting salaries. Also I think taking out the subjective from selection, you don’t have to worry as much about the people who have done a lot simply to look good on applications, or have paid for essays and help with their applications. Admissions is one thing, remember the departments don’t even have a say on who to admit, but trust me if you want to talk to the chairman of the department or the dean you can. You will know your professors by first name, and they will know yours. I am assuming engineering is like COSAM, but trust me you will be treated more as an individual than at Berkeley or other schools that look at essays etc. You also will not be competing against grad students for opportunities for competition if you enjoy that, for hands on projects, you will have small classes taught by professors, research opportunities, etc. even as a first year. Don’t overlook the benefits of a master’s only college.

My son accepted to cal poly slo
his GPA 3.93
weighted GPA : 4.18
ACT : 26
major : Mathematics

very happy.

accepted Univs : UC riverside
still waiting : UCLA,UCSD,UCSB,UCDAVIS,UCI,UW

Son wait listed for Bio;
GPA 4.15;
SAT (700 CR; 740M; 780 Writing)
ACT 30 (did not submit)
AP Bio 5; SAT II Bio 720; lots of AP classes all 4 or 5 so far…Kind of really surprised, but SLO had already fallen off our radar anyway since it is really not the best fit for him and he has already other options that fit better. Nevertheless, very surprised since we had considered it a local financial safety. Congrats to all who got in and have a great time as a Mustang.

I can’t understand why so many persons say with high ACT or SAT scores ( 2000 or above and high GPA) and not accepted by SLO ? is it real ? curious to know .

It’s important to note that SLO does not consider the Writing portion of the SAT.

@Calmomofthree
What Bio major? If it’s Biomed, I heard that that major is really competitive. My D’s classmates were accepted on that major (I think or it could be Biological Sciences) with lower SAT than your S, but their CR+M are above 1510 with about 10-12 APs.

cal poly also openly stated that they prefer the act over sat (i.e. a 30 act is more impressive than a 2000(1340) sat, tho they are the same on the concordance table)

Yikes. What was his unweighted GPA?

I have noticed rejections and waitlists being put out for other majors, but has anyone heard on MechE? I have been searching and searching, but cannot find anything!

@taehunchoi I’m stating a fact here not saying anything about your son, but your son’s stats are on the low side for acceptance to Cal Poly. In 2013 for Science and Math the average ACT is 27.1 and the average gpa is 3.92, and this is on the low side for math and most sciences as the liberal science major (for elementary teachers) has lower stats and is in this college. For all students average GPA was 3.87 and ACT was 27.3 and SAT Math at 635 and Reading 597. So you can see that Cal Poly is very competitive in many majors.

@2018dad and BMED hopefuls, not only is it really competitive, it might be one of the most. In 2012 only around 5% of applicants attended, don’t know how many applied, but it is less than half of the average of most of the engineering majors and way less than a couple of the fairly easy engineering majors to get accepted.

Some very difficult majors to get into might surprise you. Psychology, Political Science, Biology, and Kinesiology were also some of the toughest in 2012,

In addition, there have been many people who have gotten in with low stats… It really depends on your major and timing

No my son did not apply for BME, just regular Bio that’s why we were so surprised. His CR & M alone was 1440 not 1340 which somebody thought… so even without the writing score he was well within acceptance ranges for bio from last year. .His unweighted was about 3.7?? somewhere in that neighborhood. To be honest, it is ok. SLO had so fallen off his radar that he had not even bothered checking the portal, and only did so after prodding from me… Not every school is a right fit for every child, and that seems to go both ways…SLO also thought that another kid maybe better for SLO…It’s a good thing, he would not have gone anyway.

@calmomofthree Biology is almost as hard to get into as BioMed they both end up with less than 5% of applicants.
In 2012 there were 3,383 students who applied to Biology I am sure that has increased by at least 10% for 2014, a total of 188 of those attended. In BioMed 62 out of 1,362. The stats for the 65% must be amazing, way over even the top 75%. Your son’s stats had to be close to make the wait list. But I am honestly happy he didn’t get in as you said since another student will get in that maybe ranks CP as his first choice.

@ 53polo remember 35% are admitted allowing extra points for low performing schools (I explained that earlier), and with parents who hadn’t ever finished high school (each parent counts), for being first in family to attend college, etc. I honestly don’t know if anything other than low performing school is checked. Oh certain schools in area also get extra points. This is why it is so hard to compare scores, or so frustrating to see students with lower stats accepted. These are mandated categories by the state.

Son wait listed for BME. Anybody have any idea how far down the wait list they typically get? Is it considered ok to call and ask what position you are at? Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Ok so I’m seeing other people being wait listed for BME and still haven’t recieved any news. Is it safe to assume I will most likely be rejected? I know “they will be sending out acceptances through next week” but at this point, I haven’t seen anymore acceptances. I’m just seeing wait lists now. I feel like they are just moving down the list of applicants and letting the next people in.

@Bert123 If you don’t mind me asking, what were your son’s stats?

@Bert123 I would call but not sure they will give you an answer. It is totally dependent on the percentage who accept their offers. Last year more than expected accepted and records released say they only took 15 off the wait list, however in 2012 fewer than expected accepted and they took 1300+ off the wait list. It could be a big year for wait lists as they probably sent out fewer acceptances since they got too many last year, but it is only a guess. As far as I know wait lists are by major and you would be wanting low acceptances in your major. Typically the harder to get into majors have the lower acceptance rate as they accept a lot who used Cal Poly as a safety school (of course they have tried to adjust for that).

Thanks for the info. His stats are
4.0 GPA UW
4.33 CSU/UC weighted
1330 (math/cr)
750 Math 2 SAT2, 750 Chem SAT2
9 APs
Multivariable Calc senior year
5 on Calc BC, APUSH, AP Chem
4 AP Euro
3 AP Lang
Leadership and ECs/Tutoring job
Wish it had been an acceptance, but will keep our fingers crossed. It is his top choice.

Bert when did you hear he was waitlisted? Just trying to guess CalPoly’s notification system for myself.

@bert123
Those are really good stat. He must be at the top of the waitlist. I know its late now, but did he try to take the ACT? Did he apply to any UC? UC gives more weight on the UW GPA than test scores.

Still waiting BME
4.4 CSU GPA
33 ACT
11 APs, 4 honors
White male

If I haven’t heard yet is it likely I am rejected? Not even wait listed? Also are you guys receiving your decisions by text/email or just checking the portal?
