I was accepted around 8 PM last night 3.9 GPA 1280/1600 SAT for Arch
Just a question, What will happen if we don’t want to go to the “mandatory” orientation events? I’m not sure if I could attend the event that occurs around July to August even if it is a day and a half.
Still no decision yet on my son. We are OOS for admission purposes-NV (military kids are considered OOS for admission).
My son was applying to the Mechanical Engineering program. His stats:
CSU GPA: 4.25
SAT: 1440/1600 or 2130/2400
5 AP & mostly honors courses
EC- the application said only last 12 months, due to military family related events he wasn’t able to do much work etc. recently. Prior to the last 12 month period, he had attended University Engineering camps etc. None of it was added because the application indicated we should only include activities in the last 12 months.
At this point, I am assuming he did not get in to the ME program. I feel horrible because our military family lifestyle has a way of creating a lot of transitions and upheaval, he received pretty good grades and scores…but there really isn’t any credit for the 17 years of experience (5.5 cumulative of which his parent was called away for duty) that being a military kid brings with it. I feel like it is my fault. I just want to curl up and die because he worked hard for his grades in very homework intense classes, but we drag him all over the place which makes the EC challenging.
I am praying he gets into the only other university he REALLY wants to attend. That university let him include all of his Engineering camps, volunteering at church, etc. because those activities were during HS, not just the last 12 months. I am very nervous he won’t get in to that program as well. He did get into his third choice, but they don’t have a very good Engineering program.
@67dadofsenior - sorry - I don’t know the total number of scholarships given. It all depends on how much money is in the scholarship fund and though it keeps increasing, it still does not rival some other schools.
@MilitaryFamily. Cannot blame yourself. There are a lot of kids who have not heard with similar stats, and others who were admitted with lesser stats. No idea what the real basis is, but clear that what has been posted here is not the whole story.
-California Resident
-Public High School in SoCal
-I’m not completely sure about CSU GPA but I believe it’s around a 4.0. My cumulative unweighted is 3.80 and weighted is about 4.5.
-Have taken 4 AP exams and will take 4 more this year.
-ACT: 31 composite
Just to update you guys, all of the transfer students got their acceptances today. I know in past years transfers have been the last to find out, but this year isn’t like the rest, so this isn’t to say that you don’t still have a chance if you haven’t heard yet. Congrats and good luck!!
@militaryfamily - Thank you for your service. No need to feel bad even for a second, EC’s count for virtually nothing at CP. The admission person told us they document it as 7-10% but is actually less than half of that. You just check a box and hours (which is why I don’t understand posters that say they had great EC’s but didn’t get in cause they count for virtually nothing at CP). A college that can see your student as a whole person through essays and a place to put EC’s will see the value he will bring to their campus. I am sure the life you have given them has been rich with experience that will bring great benefits of its own.
What I found after being through this a few times, is because of the sheer volume of kids that apply, it only takes one thing to be a little less than somebody else. Perhaps it is the number of APs or the highest math taken - one little difference makes all the difference. In your case I see 5 APs, some kids that have taken closer and even more than 10, so perhaps that was the difference in his case, or someone else had a bit higher ACT or SAT. idk exactly, just speculating, but that is what I have noticed having been to this rodeo a few times. Wish you the best!
ACCEPTED!
Checked my portal about an hour ago.
Major: communications
In-state
CSU GPA: 3.9
SAT CR+M: 1160
I don’t have the highest test scores, so I hope my stats encourage others who are worried.
I’m just waiting on SDSU now! So excited to be accepted to CalPoly.
@CADREAMIN Thanks for your words. Our district limits kids to 2 AP classes, and requires a parent to meet with the HS counselor to allow 3 AP courses. I had to go to the Superintendent to get leadership to lean on my son’s High School to allow 4 in one year.
My son’s HS just started offering one AP History for 10th graders, otherwise the kids can only take AP in 11th & 12th grade and they are very limited in AP offerings (they just added AP Psych!). The school is fairly new and it is taking them a long time to find or train teachers to be AP certified. Sometimes as a parent you have to find the best available school and try to create learning opportunities for your child.
I have to admit, I have seen a couple of OOS ME that state they were accepted with worse stats and I am curious what prevented my son from being accepted. Maybe they have done something awesome that they aren’t mentioning. I would love to crack the code to help the other college bound kids in my life.
The Keys to the Kingdom thread is excellent and quite a read,it tells about the published algorithm used to determine acceptances and explains how you get “bonus points” toward your total, specifically for CP. The original poster of that thread is very active on here and I believe has an ME student, and seems to be very helpful to other posters. If you have any questions you may ask him directly or PM, he seems very knowledgeable and willing to share what he knows. The OOS kids as far as I know and have seen written about in the past, are measured differently and I don’t know why except they bring more money with them perhaps?
