***Official Class of 2014 Discussion Thread***

Hey fellow Columbia admits

I didn't see a general thread where we could all introduce ourselves and talk about random stuff related to Columbia and NYC, so here is one.

Who's decided for sure they're coming to Columbia? New York City is just too good a reason to turn down Columbia. There's also definitely a ton of other reasons to pick Columbia over any other school :)

Where are you all from? What major/classes are you excited about?

Yes, I am!!! I applied early because I knew that’s where I wanted to go for sure. I am from Texas, and I have no idea where to start when it comes to signing up for classes, but I figure I’ll worry about that later.

Hello!! I am from Athens, Greece and I intend to study political science or economics! I haven’t made the final decision (there’s still a fierce fight between Yale and Columbia) but I’m kind of tilting in favor of Columbia for now! :stuck_out_tongue: Indeed New York seems far too alluring!

Does anybody know whether Columbia’s political science department is good compared to the rest of the Ivy’s?

^ Columbia has a phenomenal political science dept and our specialty is international politics for which we are top 3 nationally (I would argue that Columbia is the best place to study international politics undergrad) - Sarkozy was here last Monday!

Ahh classes will be fun to figure out :)

I’m from China (born in the US), a likely admit to Columbia SEAS. I’ll probably be double majoring in either Mechanical or Civil Engineering as well as Architecture in CC.

Yeah, Columbia’s political science is definitely one of the best out there, most likely top 2 in the ivy league for polisci. There are tons of opportunities you can get in New York that you can’t get in New Haven, like the UN headquarters in NYC etc…

You can search for your classes here: [CU Directory of Classes](CU Directory of Classes)
But it doesn’t offer many descriptions of the classes, only the names and the time. You can browse descriptions of classes here: [Political Science | Columbia College](<a href=“Columbia College Bulletin < Columbia College | Columbia University”>Columbia College Bulletin < Columbia College | Columbia University) and just click on your area of study on the left and click on the course listing tab to see the classes offered.

I’m personally excited about taking Accelerated Physics, probably one of the toughest courses a freshman can take at Columbia. I like challenges :)

Thanks for the useful advice…I just caught myself browsing at Columbia’s course lists for two hours…:P

Thank you!

@ Vortar

Good luck. Be prepared to spend about 20 hours a week on P-sets.

I’m in the Freshman Orgo and have been putting around 10-15, and I know for a fact the physics is much harder.

Hi I’m Long Island, NY and was just recently admitted to Columbia College. I want to learn Igbo in college which is one of the indigenous languages of Nigeria but Columbia doesn’t have it on its language list. Is there anyway I could still learn the language via professors who may know it or other resources Columbia or New York City has?

Well, I am from Manhattan and was accepted to SEAS, so it’s not like the city will be new to me, but I am exited about going there.

do any current students have advice for igboman?

Already sent in my deposit. :)

From Los Angeles, CA.

And…I think the beautiful thing about the Core is to just explore so much. So I’m not really sure. I love Urban Studies so that one for sure.

I’m from Hawaii, and I’m pretty set on Columbia!

Are any of you going to Days on Campus?

^
i want to but cant. :frowning: i live across the world

One of the African Studies professors emailed me. He said Columbia doesn’t offer Igbo but I could take it at other places in NYC and have it count towards college credit and an African Studies major.

so did anyone attend days on campus? how was it?

I did!
It was really fun and it helped me confirm my decision about attending Columbia!

I was there for the Perspectives on Diversity and the Days on Campus programs, so I was there for three days. It was great to be able to talk to current students and alumni about everything related to Columbia. :)

did you get to meet with your admissions officer? i know at some schools’ preview weekends, the admits get to talk to their admission officers and ask them why they got admitted. that would be fun, lol.

^ I didn’t go to DOC but I did attend the international students’ online chat and I did meet my admissions officer. She was very nice, answered a lot of questions and I couldn’t believe she remembered my name! (I didn’t realise she was my admissions officer, actually xD)
