19382, I think you're probably right that the lack of an optional submission could have been a factor in putting you on the waitlist. Your scores, rank, curriculum, etc. would certainly have put you in contention, even as an OOS female. UNC OOS is even more selective than W & M, but I do think theirs is a more stats-driven process. BC Honors is also a great choice - congratulations on that!

You mention above that you think your ECs could have been considered weak, though they were sufficient for acceptances at some very selective schools. I do think that W & M is unusually holistic in the way it evaluates applicants (for a state school), and perhaps your ECs didn't match up with what the admissions committee was looking for. I don't think we can ever completely understand the reasons for a decision - unless we could somehow be in the room when those decisions are made.

19382, if I were you I would get right on trying to get myself off the wait-list. Call the admissions office, ask them who was in charge of your application, contact that person with a phone call AND a letter/e-mail telling them that if accepted you will attend. Ask them what else you can do to be removed from the wait-list and then do it ASAP. People do get off the wait-list and besides, you've got nothing to lose, right? GOOD LUCK!

TJED, thank you for the advice. I intend to contact W&M soon to let them know my interest and desire to attend if admitted. I just wish it didn't get to this point.

Decision: Accepted!!!!!!!! so exciteddddd!!
