OFFICIAL Common Application Questions Thread

thanks,another parent!

my awards overlap bet academic honors and extracurricular. is that ok?

In the .pdf file for the midyear report, it doesn't show all of my courses... Can I just handwrite in the missing one? Or what else can I do? :S

I would like to know this as well. The same thing happens to me!

donthate, I'm in the EXACT situation too!

When you emailed Tech Support, what did they say to you?

does the essay have to have your name, date of birth, and high school if you're uploading it online because I know you have to have those things if you're applying with the paper application

Is it possible to do the counselor recommendation offline? Where do i find the form. I doesn't seem to be in the downloads section (<a href="https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/DownloadForms.aspx)%5B/url%5D">https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/DownloadForms.aspx)</a>.</p>

There's 30+ pages, and I can't seem to find my answers in the few random pages I've read through.

There's only Teacher Evaluations 1 and 2. I'm pretty sure we can send in more, but which one do we use for each successive one? Would 3 be pushing it?

theres only 2 for a reason

radyland courselor rec is under school report form

Hello!

I just wanted to know.... suppose I am ready with my Stanford supplement and the rest of the common app but I havent finished the other colleges' supplements. When I submit to Stanford for SCEA it says it will lock up my common application. Does that mean I cannot add stuff into the supplements for the other schools' after I submit to Stanford? Will I have to finish ALL the essays and supplements before the first submission?

thanks in advance!

i wonder about the midyear report and the final report......what if our exam date is LATER than the deadline? i don't want to hand in these two . i'm at home now.

I believe only the common app itself is "locked" after the first submission (and it reminds you of this three times before you submit) but the supplements are independent. My son submitted the common app to three of his colleges and has supplements for two other schools. He has completed one supplement but not the other. Both are still available for him to enter info/edit. It is just the main app that gets the lock.

Q: When we submit the Common App to one university but not the others on our college list, can we go back and upload a different essay? Or does the first submission automatically freeze up the Common App so that you can't change it? I'm trying to tailor my essays to each specific university, but I'm not sure if Common App allows changes to the app after the first submission.

[EDIT: Sorry, did not read the post right above me before posting, obviously. Thanks for the info. Although it disappoints me that I can't tailor my main essay to each specific university...]

JEM' thanks! I didn't ask it here, but did at tech support on the common app website and got the same response:

Can you still access on-line and PDF supplements and make changes after submitting the common application? I am submitting a few early action, but won't have completed the supplements for some of the others.

The Response to the question you asked us can be found below under “Discussion Thread”.

Thank you for your message.

Supplements are submitted seperately. So you can submit the Common App and and do the supplements later.
In fact, you have to do it this way.

Again, thank you for contacting Technical Support. Please contact us again if you need additional assistance with this incident.

Do i have to give my teachers who are doing my recs a teacher rec app for every school i am applying to?
also the college i am ed-ing at has a pre application that they want asap. on the common app how do i send that first?

this has most likely been ask and answerd but

how many words can my big essay be at the maximum?

On the common application does a student need to list all of the colleges and universities to which he or she is applying? The list is optional, so I'm wondering if there is any purpose for including this.

collegekid1090, there is no maximum but most people recommend 500-700 words. anything past 1000 is way too long.

another question, do the recommendations and the transcripts have to be received by the deadline date, or just postmarked by then?

under the extracuriccular activities section, i have almost 20 hours a week on all my extra curriculars. I'm just curious - is this too much time, about right, or too little time spent on extra curriculars compared to applicants to top schools?
