Alright, there's this one question on the writing samples that asks you to elaborate on one of your activities. However, it says to do so in 150 WORDS or less, but it also says that your response can have 3500 CHARACTERS which is wayyyyyy more than 150 words.

What exactly does this mean??? How long can my answer be????

Go with the 150 words. I think they only put a character limit because words aren't all the same amount of characters. If you use long words, it's still 150 words, but a lot more characters than someone that uses short words. It's just to make sure you can fit in all your 150 words. Now I have a question for you guys. xD Under Academics, it asks you to list the classes you're in now and the amount of credits each class is worth. My school has a semester schedule. Each class you take for a semester is .5 of a credit. If you take the class for a full year, you get a 1.0 credit. Should I just put .5 next to every class? Or 1.0 next to the class on the second semester?

mtpaper, jym626, guitars101, and other concerned applicants:

When you add a college to the My Colleges list on the Common App Online, that institution sees you as an in-progress applicant for their institution. As an in-progress applicant:

» The institution cannot see the any data from your Common App until you submit the Common App to that institution.

» No member institution can see what colleges and universities are on your My Colleges list at any time. Only the applicant can see this information.

» An institution can send email to you if you are an in-progress applicant for that institution, unless you have opted-out by answering "No" to the "I wish to receive emails from colleges before submission of my application" question on registration/account page.

I hope this answers some of the concerns expressed.

Thank You, MacGyver....Does this also mean that a university cannot ever see which other schools you are applying to or just which are on your list? In other words, after you hit submit does one school see that you are applying to another?

The only way a Common App member institution is going to find out about other institutions to which you are applying/have applied to is if you tell them. Period.

Will somebody PLEASE answer the question about the secondary school report & mid-year report??? The secondary report has room for 7 classes, and the mid-year has room for only 6. I'm taking 8. What do I do??

i would also like to know. would you just put it on the additional information section?

i have another question: my academic gpa (math, english, social studies, history, foreign language, science, fine art) is higher than my overall gpa. which counts for colleges?

I took a course at Harvard Summer School for 2 credits last summer. Under the "College/University Credit" section should I list this? Or is it too insignificant?

Also, for the "additional information" section, should I just upload my resume onto the application? I plan on sending a resume because there isn't enough space to list everything out. But I don't know if its better to upload it as a document, or actually print it and send it off.

I can't wait for the news to be released tomorrow (Oct 19) that the Common App, people are reversing some of their rules and that there will be opportunity to make changes on the common app after submitting it to a school. It is supposed to be more like last year, with the opportunity to change college majors , etc. Don't know if the essays will be changeable or not- stay tuned! Tomorrow we find out for sure!

I don't see a place to input all your grades and courses that you took over your high school career. Where do you put all this information? Or can this information only be sent through the school report by snail mail??

i'm rather confused with submitting the online common app -

is it possible to first submit the application without the essays and then submit them when the deadline draws closer? I need to have the application fees paid soon because my school wants a month or two to fill out everyone's secondary school reports.

art_star - Once you submit the app to a college you cannot submit it again adding the essays. It is a one-time thing per college. Why can't you just pay the app fee when you submit the completed app, essays and all?

MacGyver, thanks for the clarification. I have another question for you: for this admissions cycle, applicants will NOT be able to change their Common Application after only submitting it to ONE school, is that correct?

If you're applying early...what school forms do you turn in? I assume the Teacher Evaluations are due. And so is the Secondary School Report...but is that it? I haven't finished a semester in high school yet, so we don't have a midyear report yet.

Nickel, you do not have to turn in the Midyear Report until after first semester grades have been determined, even if you're applying EA or ED. Some choose to send in a Midyear Report with first quarter grades on them, but in the end, the colleges still want the semester grades. Waste of postage, if you ask me. =)
