OFFICIAL Common Application Questions Thread

Yes!! Tech support at Common App moved it for me!! It was weird, because on the main page of my common app account it had the new name version next to the school of the supplement I submitted, so I thought all was good. But, I didn't realized that you actually had to "move" the school to the new application page, so even though it had the name of the version I wanted to submit with that supplement, it was still "attached" to the original version, and I wouldn't let me move it, since I submitted the supplement already.

After I did this last night, I saw (too late!) the info in the "help" section, about making sure that the supplement was attached to the new version.

I'm so happy! The difference between my 2 versions was minor, but the exact name of my major was different (although similar), and I would have felt stupid submitting the exact major name of my ed school to the rd school, because if I don't get in to my ed school, my rd school is my next favorite by far!!

Hey everyone,

I'm using the online Common App for most of my schools but is it true that i can only use ONE essay for ALL the colleges if i apply online? I was thinking of changing the essays up for some colleges since some things that i'd like for the school to know about me are not addressed in their supplements. am i better off sending out a paper application then? or is there a way to send different essays to each colleges?

thanks!! PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS

You can make different versions of the Common App and upload different essays for each one.

RealMom and Nickel: my son contacted the Common App and they said you do need to match recommendations/school reports to each alternate version because of those ID numbers at the bottom of the pages. They said the colleges use the ID numbers. That means teachers can't just xerox them, unless it's for the same version. One of his teachers had already sent in all his recommendations and Common App people told him to have the teacher send recs in again using the matching version so the ID numbers will match. This seems really ridiculous to me. I think he will contact some of the schools to see if they really use these ID numbers. It seems like a lot of people will have this problem since the instructions about this are buried in the "school forms" area.

But if you don't create alternate versions and just submit the same application to all the schools...is it necessary to match the school forms? Or can you photocopy?

If you only have one version, the numbers will match because there will only be one number. So it will be fine for you to photocopy it. Although I guess it's possible that some people won't have any ID number at all on their recs--what if they just printed them from the Common App site or one of the college sites without logging in and gave them to teachers without knowing anything about ID numbers? The forms are available from a lot of places so I think lots of people must send them in without any numbers on them.

This new common app has gone too far. Not very well thought out at all if you ask me. Since it was late in the game that Common App decided to allow more than one version, there must be many many students who downloaded the rec. forms prior to that. My D's school required these forms at least a month before the app. due date, so Oct. 15th for most of her EA schools.

I'm not going to worry about the rec forms and version numbers. I can't believe Common App advised to have teachers resend rec forms..... what a burden for these teachers who have enough to do.

Mister Sinister: Most colleges actually ask that you do not include a resume along with the application. When you submit your application, they will download it onto their computers or print it out. When this occurs, the status of the application will change to "Downloaded."

Thanks for replying. Is it okay to upload this in the "additional writing section" or should this be included with the transcripts?

On the common app, there's this small section that says:

If you have attended any other Secondary Schools, summer schools, or programs since ninth grade, check this box

and then proceeds to give to some blanks.

Now when they say programs, does that include things like Governor's School, RSI, TASP type things?

Why's that?

A lot of colleges prefer that they get things electronically, as I assume it's easier for them.

Oh, that is true. Stanford doesn't offer paper copies anymore.

I am using a paper fee waiver request. So will they 'hold' the application TILL they receive it? Or just till the deadline..then..too bad...?

Anyone?

They'll just wait until they receive it and then process the application. Have you submmited the application yet? Have you sent the fee waiver?

I have already submitted the application and supplement. The fee waiver, together with my other paper stuff, was received on the 8th, according to my postal service. But on the checklist page says payment status: not submitted.

They'll either accept the fee waiver request or they'll deny it. If it's the latter, then they will contact you requesting payment. Either way, it will say Not Submitted because the Common App didn't process the fee.

Oh okay. Thanks a lot, Quix and Nickel!

I am elegible for a college board fee waiver how do I request one?

You request one from your guidance counselor at school; it is a slip of paper that you turn in.

Hey guys--
i am currently completing my applications--
what counts as "other coursework"?
does a CPR class i completed in one weekend count?
how about swimming classes i took over the summer for 2 years?
and a memory class i took in 9th grade(2 weeks, 5 hours a week)?
and a beginning guitar class i took this year (6 week class)
or are these listing really "pushing it?"
should i not include them at all?
