OFFICIAL Common Application Questions Thread

What version of MS Word do you have? If you have the new 2007 version, convert the file from .docx to .doc

hey if we create an alternate version for the application, is it ok if the common app number is different from the number that is on the teacher eval that you gave to your teachers? Since I printed the teacher evals in the original app.

frutiaspice - this has been discussed all over the site. yes, it will be fine.

If I forgot to put in the number of credits each class is worth on the academics part, do you think colleges will really care? I totally missed that part in the directions and only put the class names w/o the number of credits......... is this a big deal?

No, it's not a big deal. The credit value will show up on the transcript.

Oh snap! I just looked at the printed form of my common application that I already submitted, and it says that we must submit our name school and DOB on the essays... But then I looked back on the actual field where I typed it in originally and it did not say this anywhere. So is the name and school thing just for if you printed out the application to send or what?

i think it's just for if you print it. becuase when you send electronically, it automatically puts your id # on all your essays.

my question (for some reason search is not working right now) URGENT
in the "Other Secondary Schools" section, is that where we put summer programs too such as HOBY and business camps?

JohnC - I think summer programs dont really fit anywhere on the common app, unless they are programs given by an insitution at their site. This is a shortfall of the CA. So far, the supplements my son has filled out has a more appropriate form.

Most of the summer programs my kids attend are on a university campus, but have nothing to do with the uni.

If you dont feel it fits into the other secondary section, I would put it in the other info section.

Thanks for the response, but this is what it says
"If you have attended any other Secondary Schools, summer schools, or programs since ninth grade, check this box"
and the business camp I attended was organized directly by the university... so should I put it in that section?

Question: When I printed out my application that I will be submitting online, the "I am applying for the term beginning" section is blank. How do I fix this??!!

optisrule this has been a common question: it will be blank when you print preview because you actually fill in the term right before you click submit. So after you actualy submit it will be filled in, but when you just print-preview it will be seen as blank. This is not a problem. just a little idiosyncracy of the common app

effective payment date? (on the payment page) what does that mean exactly? there is a delay of about 4 days!? That date doesn't count right? it;s the date you sumbit the app that counts, right?

Could someone please tell me if there is a word limit on the document submitted for "Additional information"?

"HOW DO I SUBMIT MY COMMON APPLICATION?
Once you have answered all required questions, you may submit your application. Click the 'Submit' button to submit your application - - this button can be found on the 'Sign & Submit' section and the 'My Colleges' section.

You must submit the Common App to each of your selected institutions. This can be done all at one time, or one at a time. After you have submitted your Common App, you may add additional institutions and submit your application to them, as well. Once you have submitted your Common App to any institution, your application will be locked and you will not be able to make any changes to it. "

The underline portion above - does this mean the application will be locked for that institution or for all insitutions (meaning I cannot make any changes and will have to just submit 'as is' to another insitution)?

TIA.

where on the common app do you indicate the type of admission plan that you are electing to do (EA, for example)?

for a 12-01 EA deadline, it was clarified to me by the adcom that the app materials need to be POSTMARKED on or before 12-01.

But I forgot to ask about the electronically submitted Common App deadline.

ANYONE: for a 12-01 EA deadline, what is the latest time to submit the common app electronically? Assume we are applying to colleges in the same time zone.

not that he'd go that far, but is it 11:59 cst, 12-01, for a midwest college?

AGHHH

I don't want colleges that don't require SAT Subject tests to see them (so I didn't report to them) but on the common app it asks for them...what to do?!

Just put them on. Even if the school doesn't require them, they'll see them if you submit any SAT scores to that school. SAT I and SAT II scores are shown on the same report.

when i print/preview the common app, i notice the type of admission (I want EA) does not appear. how do I tell in the common app that i want an EA admission?

also,

if an app deadline says postmarked on or before 12-01, does that also mean SUBMITTED electronically on or before 12-01?

Everyone is saying on December the 1st. So before midnight.
