***Official Cornell Class of 2019 Waitlist thread

My son heard from his regional admissions officer this afternoon. She said they don’t yet know whether they will be taking students off the waitlist for the College of Arts & Sciences. (No mention of the other college waitlists at Cornell.) She said they are updating everyone’s waitlist files for review and will inform everyone of any news as soon as they know their plans.

I’m praying that the College of Arts and Sciences will take kids off the waitlist this year.

My older one got off 2 WLs (Cornel & Duke) a while back. Since then I have been keeping track of the trend, and have helped students in similar situation. Every year it is around the second week of May when there is some movement, and it will go on until June.

Don’t quote me on this, but I think there maybe more schools going to WL because so many students are applying to more schools. Unless colleges are better at predicting their yields, they may need to go to their WL. A lot of top tier schools had to go to their WLs to fill their class last year. Do a search in the Parent Forum for schools going to wait list from last year.

The difference of having the GC call is adcoms are more likely to speak with a GC and they would be more frank. When my kid’s GC called to find out why my kid was WL, she was told that they thought my kid wouldn’t attend, so the GC assured them that my kid would attend if accepted. The GC did ask my kid if she would attend before she called. That being said, a friend’s daughter was in the same position and her GC wouldn’t make the call, so my friend called on her daughter’s behalf. Her daughter was also accepted off the WL same year.

@oldfort That being said, would you recommend that I get my guidance counselor to call Cornell Admissions to tell them that I would for sure attend if accepted? I am willing to do whatever it takes to increase my chances of admission. So far, I’ve just sent several updates.

@oldfort Thanks for the advice! but I heard some colleges do not like guidance counselor calling to their admission offices. Am I understanding it wrong?

My kid’s GC got every one of her kids off the WL. Why would admission offices not want to have a relationship with GC? Adcoms depend on GCs to give them “honest” assessment of applicants. Adcoms need GCs to be the gatekeepers to keep students honest, so students do not ED to multiple schools. Adcoms at some colleges would “wine and dine” desirable high school’s GCs in order to get more students from a particular region/school. In general, adcoms want to have good relationships with GCs. They would take calls from GC before they would talk to parents/students.

I agree with @oldfort, there are many Cornell “feeder” High Schools (ours included) where the GC have strong relationships with the Adcom. My son’s GC made a call and send an additional letter on his behalf after S3 was deferred ED, that I believe helped to to get him admitted.

A few people found out on the 8th last year

I e-mailed the California representative (I’m from CA) with an update and such-- should I also email the admissions office directly or do you think this is enough?

Thanks

@trose220 You should be okay. Either way, your representative would make sure that the update goes to your file.

Anyone hear anything today?

I called the Office of Admissions today and was transferred to the College of Arts and Sciences admissions office (that is the school my son is waiting on). I asked if there had been any decisions yet as to whether students would be taken from the waiting list. I was told that no decisions had been made yet as to whether anyone would be taken, but that everyone would be notified by the end of the month “one way or the other”. Good luck to everyone!

Does Cornell release the decision for spring admissions as well by the end of the month? (or mid-May as it says on the website?)

That’s good news is we will be notified by the end of the month, on previous years threads some people were notified as late as June 20th

Well, at least we can still hope, and get closure that by the end of May, we will hear back from Cornell. I was also wondering about Spring 2016 Admission. I know CAS said they would admit a few students in the spring from the waitlist for sure because I got the email. Cross our fingers and pray XD

Last year CALS was the first to release their waitlist decisions, and it was as early as May 8th. What happened this year?

Maybe they aren’t going to the waitlist this year

@werewolf @darktoform31 I don’t think it necessarily means that they’re not going to waitlist-- every year is different . Hopefully we’ll get a response sometime this week, though.

Has anyone been contacted by their alternate college office of admissions? Just asking bc mine contacted me and asked if I wanted to be considered for admissions and I just want to know what that means

@runcupcakerun Which college were you contacted by? And how were you contacted? I guess this means they will be going to the waitlist
