[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Female applying to engineering?
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My dedication to my one EC, hard course load, grades, SATs, APs, rec letters
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I really tried to focus on my passion for technical theater and make that come through in my essays. I think I did a good job in my supplement connecting it to CoE and how my involvement in technical theater inspired me to pursue engineering in college. I made sure to also keep myself from giving generic answers as to why I wanted to go to Cornell.
[] Weaknesses: Lack of ECs and other volunteer work basically
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Supplement and common app essay, technical theater involvement, coarse load
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:  Just to Cornell!
[li] Your “Cornell” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Definitely my involvement and leadership in my school’s backstage crew[/li][/ul]

I’m so happy!!! Congrats to everyone to get in, and to those who were deferred/rejected, there are so many other amazing schools out there that will be lucky to have you!

To other students not applying to colleges this year but in the future: do not count yourself out, no matter what! After looking at all the other applicants on CC with amazing ECs, I thought I had dug my own grave by only being involved in one extracurricular throughout my entire high school career, but it’s honestly quality and not quantity that matters, trust me. Not to say a lot of ECs isn’t good, but if you only do one thing, make sure that you do it really well and use your essays to show how much of a passion you have for it, that’s what they’re there for!

Accepted CAS!

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Huge passion for biology and exercise physiology, as demonstrated by my essays.
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Incredible improvement between freshman and senior year as difficulty increased a lot. I was ranked 110/210 Freshman year with an 3.24 UW, increased it to a 3.44 UW my Sophomore year with a rank of 89/210, (I lost 65 pounds, joined the track team, and someone explained to me what college meant, which I wrote a letter about for my additional info), to a 3.68 UW my Junior year, my first year of full IB, giving me the rank 51/205, and then a 3.72 UW my Senior year, placing me at 49/205.

[] Your “Cornell” factor - the most unique thing in your application: My drive to learn and desire to get a 4 year education in 4 years, while not wasting a drop of resources given to me.[/ul]

I’m crushed. I don’t understand why I wasn’t even deferred. This is honestly the only school I’ve been to where I knew instantly that I wanted to go. My friend just got accepted to ILR with a 1830 SAT and significantly worse academic standings than myself, simply because his coach told him he could get him in. He submitted his ED app on November 9, 4 days after it had closed, with a “Coach’s Extension”, and was accepted.

His athletic ability won him this college, and he’s going to try and get Bucknell to offer him a better deal so that he can say that ED at Cornell won’t work due to his inability to afford it and better deal elsewhere. Talk about rigging the system.

Decision: Accepted to College of Arts and Sciences

 • Honor Societies: National, Science, History, World Language

Subjective:
[ *] Extracurriculars (leadership in parenthesis): (Hope Club and Teach the World Online, Alliance LGBT Club), Varsity Track and Field Athlete, Crossfit Weight Training, Greenpeace NJ Youth Counsel, Multi-cultural Club, Extended Essay on Cancer Research
[ *] Job/Work Experience: Law Firm Intern for 2 Summers and Part Time Summer/School Year at a Wellness Clinic
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Crossfit Kid’s Program Coach, Project LEAD, French, History and Biology Tutoring
[ *] Summer Activities: Law Firm Intern, Foreign Exchange to Turkey, Wellness Center Receptionist
[ *] Essays: Common-App was good- about how I saw my world after returning from Turkey, recognizing prejudice, etc… Supplement was a strength- I researched alumni who are currently in the medical field and mentioned them, used a quote from Cornell’s 3rd president, original
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: IB Program Coordinator included a personal anecdote and IB History HL teacher who I’ve had for 3 years- he actually said in the letter he didn’t follow a template like he normally did to write mine
[ *] Counselor Rec: My counselor and I have been pretty close, so I definitely think she put in a good word, and also mentioned the hardships of a prolonged family situation
[ *] Interview: Postponed a few times because of Hurricane Sandy, yet it went well. More of a prolonged discussion and advice for the alumn’s own son to do well into my high school

Other
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[ *] Intended Major: Human Biology, Health and Society
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): NJ
[ *] Country (if international applicant): USA
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[ *] Gender: Female
[ *] Income Bracket: <150,000
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection
[ *] Strengths: the writing components of the application
[ *] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I tried to come off as a worldly, well-rounded applicant. I think it’s unique as a Pre-Med candidate if you’re artsy, like to write, weight-lift and learn languages.
[ *] Weaknesses: SAT scores and quantitative stats- no one thought I was going to get in early because of my SAT Score
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I seemed really interested in the school and program, and did so much research beforehand that my supplement was really written and tailored for that specific option
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I applied Early so I was only accepted to Rutgers University which has rolling admissions
[ *] Your “Cornell” factor - the most unique thing in your application: well-roundedness and passion

Rejected Human Ecology
I’m not posting stats because I’m too depressed, but I am shocked.
My scores weren’t fantastic, but I thought my essays, interview, and teacher recs showed how much Cornell University meant to me. I have a Cornell bumper sticker on my car for goodness sake.
I am so disappointed that some people ^ didn’t even WANT to go to Cornell, because I would give anything to be able to go there.
I just wish I could understand WHY I wasn’t good enough.

@teddi95m, Hey, I feel your pain, and I agree with you. I really would like some feedback. I actually emailed Cornell, saying that the least they could do was provide some feedback for me. I used the application fee as a reason for why they should do so. I mean, I really would like to know why I am weak.

@NYBohemian, Yeah, sorry but what the !uck, I hate how some of the applicants show so much passion, then get rejected. Meanwhile, there are athletes that have nothing to show except their natural talent that get accepted. Then, they don’t really even care about the school whatsoever. Life really sucks. I don’t mean to sound like a little whiny **, but I’m pretty *ed and disappointed in myself. I guess I’ll get passed it eventually…

Decision: Accepted into AAP!
Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2090 total. 720 CR, 670 Math, 700 Writing
[] SAT II: Math I: 670 Math II: 640. On the low side ):
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): N/A, my school only does weighted. Weighted 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 10%. School doesn’t report rank.
[] AP: European History (5), US History: (5)
[] Senior Year Course Load: One of the hardest for my school. Taking AP Calculus BC, AP Language and Composition, AP Spanish, Art Major, AP Physics and AP Chemistry.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
-NAHS
-NHS
-NSHSS
-National Hispanic Scholar Award
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
-Swimming for both Club (National Team) and High School. Actually was 2 seconds away from Trials in 100 Fly Sophomore year, state finalist for 2 years, won an open water competition for my age group. Super Sectionals qualifying times.
-Diversity Camp 2011 for Swimming. Needed Sectionals swimming cuts + minority status to apply and be selected. One of two representatives from Middle Atlantic.
[] Job/Work Experience:
-Intern for Exponent Animation Department
-Intern for Thomas B. Wagner, architect
[] Volunteer/Community service:
-Pre-school Spanish teacher
-volunteer work with NAHS and NHS, timed at swim meets, helped create a mosaic for the school on my free time, helped other students in art class.
[] Summer Activities:
-Learned Japanese at Drexel for 3 summers, got an A-, A, and A for final grades.
-Spent Summer of 2012 at Cornell Summer College for Architecture, got a B+ in Studio and A in Lecture
-Traveled abroad to Japan alone Summer of 2012 to stay with my host family OUTSIDE the exchange program to immerse myself in Japanese language.
[] Essays: Very good. Probably the reason why I was accepted. Short response on swimming, common app on teaching preschoolers Spanish, supplement on connecting Architecture to Japanese language and how my interest in Japan lead me to Architecture.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Also very good. Physics teacher and Art teacher wrote them since I wanted to major in Architecture. My art teacher has known me for 3 years and 3 different classes, my physics teacher knew me for two years (Honor and AP Physics)
[] Counselor Rec: Mainly to explain my incredible absences (I’ve missed over 20 days of school each year). I am the oldest of 5 kids, and my parents have put their careers first now that I’m older, leaving me to feed, drive to school, clean and care for four younger siblings who don’t really want to listen to me. My brother was also diagnosed with Guillan-Barre syndrome freshman year, was completely paralyzed and nearly died, and I got really depressed and sick. It’s also hard for me to balance swimming and school into all of this since I have frequent morning practices at 4 AM and this also made me really sick a lot. I appealed and was awarded all lost credit for my classes for the last 3 years.
[] Interview: Had a mandatory interview with an alumni. Went great! Talked about my favorite architects (Tadao Ando and Santiago Calatrava), what we thought about Milstein and swapped crit horror stories. I enjoyed it, after getting over the initial nerves.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, because I have 4 siblings.
[] Intended Major: Architecture
[] State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic (Puerto Rican)
[] Gender:Female
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Didn’t go for URM because I thought that there was more to me than that. I don’t speak Spanish at home, only with my grandparents and a lot of it I learned from telenovelas and school. Parents are legacy, Dad from Engineering, Mom from Architecture, although apparently it’s harder to get in if you’re legacy from Architecture because they hold you to a higher standard.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Japanese, Swimming, Minority status? One of my Mexican-American friends applied and didn’t get in with better SAT scores and grades than I, so clearly Minority status alone isn’t enough IMO.
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Being well-rounded, multi-faceted. Student-Athelete, sister, teacher, a person who genuinely enjoys learning and is excited to experience new things.
[] Weaknesses: Portfolio wasn’t that amazing. SAT Math scores were weak.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Essays and recommendations I think set me apart from others.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere! Just applied to Cornell! Was actually expecting to be rejected so I had a bunch of applications lined up for Drexel, Arizona (full ride scholarship), Rice, Carnegie, Pratt, and Syracuse.
[] Your “Cornell” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I definitely had a nice parallel between architecture and Japanese in my supplemental essay and my portfolio, and I think it’s that connection that got me in because my SATs weren’t amazing and my portfolio a little above average in my opinion. I started Art late, so my portfolio was a lot of photography since I took a lot of photography courses in my high school (actually, I took the photograph for my High School website). I do have a background in photoshop and design, and several people commented that my portfolio was well-organized. I don’t know what to think. I still can’t believe I was accepted.

That’s disgusting. I’m so sorry. ): @NYBohemian.
I was an athlete, but I put it on the backburner because there’s no way I would have gotten into architecture on swimming alone because it is all portfolio based. I know how you feel. Two people were accepted into Penn from my school, one an athlete who isn’t that smart, and actually the class drug dealer because his father is a high-level professor. It makes me sick, because the other smart, qualified kids who applied to Penn got deferred.

^Once again, what the hell? That’s so messed up…:(
