Decision: Rejected

My low GPA (and thus my rank) was influenced by the fact I was homeless on and off during the 9th and 10th grades.

Objective:[ul]

[] SAT I (breakdown): Did not take.
[] ACT: 34 Superscored (33E, 34M, 31R, 36S, 8W).

[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Physics C: Mechanics (4), Chemistry (4), Biology (3), Calculus AB (3, self study/for fun in 10th grade), English Language (3). (I was dead at the end of the year).
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): None.

[] Counselor Rec: Pretty good…
[] Additional Rec: None.
[] Interview: Great! I had a phone interview, (which was optional), and I was told it went very well and will help.
[/ul]Other:[ul]

[/ul]Reflection:[ul]
[li] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My experience and love in/for Physics and Math and my growth as a student.[/li][li] Strengths: 11th and 12th grade schedules. Test scores were ok, (I didn’t study). My best strength HAS to be my huge growth as a student. I was in the lowest level classes during my Freshman year and when I discovered Physics, I jumped. In the 10th grade I completed Geometry-Calc BC as well as several science classes. I took 3 AP Sciences in the 11th grade, as well as Multivariable Calc and Differential Equations. Also, I am the most advanced French student in my school, (I’m the only one taking the class so it’s pretty vigorous).[/li][li] Weaknesses: GPA and Rank. Definitely. My SAT II tests weren’t incredible.[/li][li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: GPA and Rank. [/li][li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/li][li] Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Once again, growth and Math/Science Diversity.[/li][/ul]

**Decision: Deferred **

[] SAT II: 750 US, 650 Bio E

[] Essays: I thought my Cornell essay and even my Common App essay (to an extent) really showed my fit for the school
[] Teacher Recommendation: Amazing I’d assume. They came from my Junior Year Physics Teacher and my Sophomore Year English Teacher
[] Counselor Rec: Also amazing. I’ve gone on a near-weekly basis since the final quarter of my Junior year and he knew how important Cornell was to me.
[] Additional Rec: Came from my AP US/ AP Macro teacher (he is an alum)

[] Supplementary Material (portfolio, etc.): N/A

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): NY
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Competitive Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Middle Class
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I have a strongly displayed interest in biology and business which is a huge factor with regard to the fact that AEM resides within CALS. (I want to go for Environmental Economics)
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: GPA and strong academic fit for the school as shown by some of my extra curriculars
[] Weaknesses: Average test scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m predominantly unhooked and have test scores approximately within the 50% range for the program (nothing astronomical)
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted EA to Fordham w/ scholarship (awaiting approximately 9 other schools both EA and RD)
[li] Do you like the cold?: Love it
[/li]

[/ul]**General Comments: ** I’m not gonna say it didn’t hurt to see a deferral but I’ll definitely be ecstatic if I were to be given an acceptance in the RD round. I haven’t seen too many deferrals so far so maybe that’s a good sign. Congrats to those who have gotten in and to those who were rejected or deferred, take a week, dust yourself off, and hopefully RD or EA schools will be more favorable. In hindsight, I’m still happy I can say I don’t regret applying; it’s really a great school.

[] Strengths: Grades, essays, volunteer work, extracurriculars
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I mostly tried to focus on the essay part.
[li] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself:[/li]My love of science; but at the same time, my interest in expanding my hemispheres of attention towards musical and expressive activities. I tried to tell them about personal things not mentioned in my app, such as my hobbies and types of music I listen to. I also tried to convey my interest in applying Cornell’s resources to the things I observed in my internship. The extra rec helped in this regard.

[li] Weaknesses: not a ton of AP courses or exams (seriously, i thought i wuz gunna get deferred when i saw who else got deferred from Ivies) not a ton of awards or ECs either and the ones i had wernt very original.
[/li]

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:legacy helped out most likely, but i would rage against the person who said it was the sole reason of my acceptance. Instead i think it was the way i utilized my hooks, expressed my interests on paper, and demonstrated to the univ just how much i was willing to do to get accepted. (Doing rotc and getting extra recs) oh and breaking 2300 on the SAT probably helped a bit lol.
[/li]

[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Didn’t apply elsewhere, Cornell bound babyyyy!!!
[/li]

[li] Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application:My Genuine Fit with this school.
[/li]

Comments:
Seriously, I know it sounds a bit cheesy, but colleges want to admit not just high numbers, but the most fitted towards what the university has to offer. They want to kmow what you can do and how you can help society if you are given their resources, so DONT DONT DONT be vague about showing your interests to them. Go overboard with your app, slave over every word in your supplements until it conveys exactly what you want itto convey, utilize every hook you think you might have, and put all your chips, heart, and soul into your interest for the school. Admissions officers will notice this; after all, they are only human. I’ve seen too many friends become hopeless after deferral/rehpjection and an even greater number resentful because of certain people who get into ‘name brand’ colleges. I do not wish these sentiments upon any high schooler. To any people planning on applying RD, focus on knowing and proving why cornell university is absolutely right for you. I promise you, that attitude will get you where you deserve to go:)

Just by looking at your data I think you have a great chance! I got deferred as well. But anyway, yeah, good luck!!!
=)=)!

[] Summer Activities: I work all year round, and continue training all summer for track
[] Essays: Read by a lady who used to work in University of Chicago’s Admissions Office and she told me they were great. Common App Essay was about growing up with ADD and how the struggle made me a stronger more empowered person. Supplement essay was about how I want to get an Engineering education so I can help those who truly need it, so I can make a difference in the world and that Cornell’s resources(particularly the diversity, and female professors) in combination with their philosophy on education would helps me achieve my goal. It was probably the best essay I have ever written.
[] Teacher Recommendation: My AP Chemistry teacher from sophomore year; A Cornell Grad and one of the most inspiring women I have ever met; I am sure it was a great rec. The second was from my AP Physics B and C teacher whom I have had for Junior and Senior Years; also a Cornell Grad in Physics Engineering, a brilliant man who really likes me, but I am unsure about his abilities to write a strong, concise rec.
[] Counselor Rec: As strong as it could be from a counsellor whom I met literally in August for the first time, since my old one retired. And I go to a public school in NJ with a graduating class of almost 600 so it was most definitely impersonal.
[] Additional Rec: The weight room coach at my school whom I have known since i was in 6th grade, I also am close friends with his son, and know him through church and FCA. He does not know me in an academic sphere so I am sure it was a great character reference.

[] Strengths: Essays, Extracurriculars, Transcript
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Conquered a learning disability, how I want an engineering education to change the world and help those in need not just to make money
[] Weaknesses: SAT II scores, Not a part of any engineering related clubs at school so hard to show how I know I want to be an engineer
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Cornell Engineering’s education philosophy perfectly aligns with my career goals, I am also a female going into engineering, Cornell also has a strong acceptance rate from my school; two of us were accepted ED to the engineering school this year
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to WPI and given the Presidential Scholarship without even filling out the Merit Scholarship Application
[] Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: That I want an Engineering education to help people, to make things that will make life easier for those who truly need it; those in developing nations or impoverished communities, Cornell is really big on this philosophy.
