Official Cornell transfers for Fall 2014

Hello all,
This forum shall be used by Cornell official transfers for Fall 2014 and serves as a media to introduce each other, learn from each other's experiences and plans to do at Cornell.

I am a Civil Engineering major, entering, as of now, as a Sophomore (2nd semester). I am from New York City, and I look forward to meet you all. I am currently an Engineering Science major at CUNY and received my acceptance from College of Engineering this week. Very content with the offer, and I am in.

Congratulations to all in advance.

Hey buddy! I’m joining Cornell as an operations research major. I’m an international student from mainland China:) Right now I’m studying at UCSD double major in Stats and Econ. I am so thrilled to be accepted by college of engineering! Really looking forward seeing you all!

@Amos2014 Hey there! Very happy for both of us. We all have worked hard, and deserved the acceptance. Now, that is very interesting that you are doing Operations Research. Is there any specific area you are mostly interested on? I believe that is a broad field, so I am just asking because so far you are the only person I know studying Operations Research.

@engineeringboy‌ yea, OR might not be a hot major these days, lol. I’m really interested in the buy side of finance and want to get a job in a hedge fund or something related. I really like the course settings in this major which is like the blend of my former majors with more applications. And I feel the sense of belonging as engineer, not the kind of spoiled kids Ina sui, haha

Spoiled kids in suits…the UI on my cellphone got messed up…

Oh I see! That’s very nice that you have found the perfect match. As for me, Cornell’s Civil Engineering program is the ideal for the things I want to do. It gets me experience my major field of interest, Structural Engineering while also touching Environmental Engineering, my 2nd one. I’ll then get a Ph.D concentrated in Structural Analysis, so they definitely provide what I need. @Amos2014

Hi guys, I’m also civil engineering, though I’m not sure between transportation and structural at this point. Before I come to Cornell I’m taking one last class at my current school, Northeastern University, on transportation engineering (it’s a summer class) to help me decide.

Transferring is certainly quite a process. At NU I had my housing, dining, and classes for the fall all figured out, and a general plan for the next couple years, but now I’ve got to start from scratch, essentially. But I’m hoping it’s worth it.

It will definitely be worth it @vanelephant . A change is always good. I am not sure why you are leaving your school, but if you decided for Cornell, it’s for the good.

I did not (or still don’t) know what to go for, either for transportation or structural. It was a very tough decision to choose for Structural because I do enjoy both, and want to do both. However, I figured that Transportation is just one field, whereas with structural I can explore many areas, including transportation because any civil infrastructure requires structural engineering, so I will get to explore all areas. I really hope that’s the best decision, and I hope to prove that at a research project at Princeton University this summer in Structural analysis.

I look forward to meet you. It looks like we share some common goals, and we will definitely take at least one class together at Cornell. Congratulations for getting into Cornell.

“common” not needed. Lol

Hi guys!

I got into CALS for Bio sci, most likely concentrate on Biochemistry. I’m a freshman right now from NYC at Macaulay Honors at CCNY. @engineeringboy‌, you said you were from a CUNY as well?

I’m still indecisive about going, it’s mainly an issue of starting over from scratch, having to replan everything, having to give up my research opportunities, but most likely I think I’ll end up going. I also hope it’s worth it. How easy was it for you guys to decide to go to Cornell?

@engineeringboy‌ have u received your admission packet yet? I feel a bit anxious cuz I have to take financial aid into my final consideration.

Hey guys! I got into ILR and hope to eventually go on to law school to concentrate in labor law or something similar. I have commuted to my current school, so this will be my first experience living on campus. Should be fun!

(Just wanted to post on this thread, since the discussion one is kinda quieting down.) Hey guys, so I just got an email this morning from an admission officer at COE telling me that my application was denied. He (I assume) said that my app made the final cut for faculty review and stated that I got rejected because they didn’t think my intended major matched my academic interests. So I just sent out an email to him to clarify and explain what my academic plan is. Then he got back to me and said he’s flagged my file and added the explanation to it. If the admitted students and wait listed students choose not to matriculate, he will make a case for me with the department I applied to. I don’t fully understand the current situation. Is this an appeal? Any ideas what I can do at this point? I’ve submitted a deposit at Wash U, but I’d be thrilled to enroll at Cornell. The chances are pretty slim though. I saw a post before on this thread. A previously denied applicant got an email from admissions for an offer, but I don’t know if we are in the same situation here.

Hey folks,

Sorry for the delay. Finals week this week and did not have the time to post.

@mathloi95 Hey there. Yes. I am from BMCC CUNY. Nice to see you here. So, how do I start? First, you are in Honors College at City, which is good. But think the main reason you applied to Cornell? Was it because of its standard or just because you don’t want to be at City anymore? You know. We all do things for a purpose. If you applied to Cornell, and got accepted, that could mean that is where you have to be, considering the competition is good. It will definitely be worth it because of the strong bonds you can build up there which will eventually benefit you in the work market. I am not saying that with Maculay CCNY you can’t get the same thing, rather, Cornell has a name, a name more popular than that of City.

Look at my case. I came from the Dominican Republic. I graduated from HS there at the age of 14. Got accepted to the top 3 universities in the country. Based on my calculations, I will be able to graduate by 18. However, Mom brought me here to explore and take benefit of the all the opportunities, including (paid) college. At the beginning it was incredibly hard since I will be basically starting from zero. I did not know English, but I had faith it was all for the good. I went to CUNY, and see, now I am 18, and I got accepted to Cornell University, which is a world-recognized university, and a to a Princeton University research internship this summer.

Now, my point is that, sometimes it is worthy starting from scratch. If you consider that Cornell is the place where you want to be, do so. Don’t mind starting from scratch. It is better to do things at a slow pace (and enjoy them) than to do them and not enjoy doing them.

Also, my decision to go to Cornell has been since I was in my country, it has always been my dream school. I knew I would go to Cornell for a Ph.D, but look, I got accepted for undergraduate studies so now I am looking forward to Standford, Princeton or MIT (first choice) for a Ph.D in Structural Engineering.
@mathloi95

@Amos2014 Nothing here yet! I actually got my decision via email, and then I corroborated it on the decision website. I emailed them about it, and they said I would get it next week.

@shockastrika83 Yess! Same here! This will definitely be one of my best academic experiences. I look forward to seeing you there. Keep in touch!

Hey all,

Have you received your financial aid decision? I am anxiously waiting for it as I have to make my deposit in about a week. @Amos2014 @mathloi95 @shockastrika83

@engineeringboy I received my aid letter about a week after my acceptance letter. Is there anything on your financial aid to-do list? If not, I’d contact the financial aid department and ask them when they think they’ll have your award ready.

hey guys, is anybody from NNJ or NYC area? One - we can drive to Cornell together on 22nd, two - looking for a roommate! (mechanical engineering major)
