Essays: About how my high school was a second home. People said it was very well written, but the topic wasn’t controversial or especially revealing.
Teacher Recommendation: From the same teacher that got me into the Harvard internship, so probably amazing. I don’t think the other one was read, Commonapp only listed the first one being downloaded.
Counselor Rec: School uses two teacher “assessments” in place of this. Both of my assessments were from Harvard alums.
Additional Rec: Lab mentor, probably amazing
Interview: I think this is what tipped it for me. I really connected with my interviewer, we both liked the same aspects of Dartmouth.

Weaknesses: Virtually no major awards, did not submit my Harvard research to any competitions, limited community service, essay?
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I made it very clear to my interviewer and the admissions officers what my motivation was and why I pursued the activities I did.

Subjective:
Essays: Outstanding. I have had my math teacher for four years, and we are very close. English teacher openly told me I was one of the strongest students he has had. Counselor and I are very close as well. Art teacher wrote a very positive and detailed rec. Peer rec though was probably the best - written by my best friend who is herself a very talented writer. We also do a lot of activities together including art, clubs, and classes, so she had a lot to say.
Personal Essay: Too long, but apparently they liked it.

Hook: Not sure there is one in particular, but here are a couple angles:
Newspaper Editor-in-Chief: Led the paper to publishing online for the first time. Manage a staff of 50 writers and editors
Art Supplement: Very good quality images of broad painting portfolio. I also contacted/had correspondence with painting teachers at Dartmouth and I taught classes over the summer to local kids
Independent research: For the IB diploma I completed a massive research paper. I sent Dartmouth the abstract.
Published work: I’ve had a couple of letters to the editor published in the NY Times
Athletics: Not officially recruited for cross country and track, but the coach wrote a formal letter on my behalf for a “soft recruit” aka notifying the school that if I were to be accepted, I would run on the team.

Location: NJ, USA
School Type: Private
White, female
Major: Government

Strengths:
Very hard transcript and stellar grades from freshman year through senior fall. My essays and recommendations were very strong. Testing was not outstanding, but my ACTS were strong besides the Science part, and I am not in any way a science person. I’m not sure that the arts supplement helped much, but I bet that the athletics did. One of my teachers is also a Dartmouth alum, and he wrote a special letter to admissions on my behalf. Again, probably inconsequential, but in the file. Finally, my role on newspaper really shined. Turned an average school paper into an online version that publishes twice as often, and created a staff writer system from scratch.

Still on shock. Cannot wait to get on campus.

Summer Activities: Pennsylvania School of Global Entrepreneurship, travels, working
Essays: I thought my essay was really strong. It was about my interest in history and how it has evolved as I’ve gotten older.
Teacher Recommendation: I also think that this was a strong point. I had recs from my junior year English teacher, chem teacher, and journalism teacher (he wrote mostly as newspaper adviser though)
Counselor Rec: I’m sure this was awesome. She already had it done when I asked her for it and she told me that it was really good.
Additional Rec: I sent two peer recs. One from a friend who I’ve had classes with for the last six years and that I’ve worked with closely in both newspaper and band. The other was from a friend who’s graduated from college.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t think anything about my application was particularly strong or weak. I think I was accepted because of the recommendations and well rounded-ness, but I’ll never know. There are so many little things that may have been what put me over.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Just Dartmouth!

General Comments: I’m posting this for younger students to show that not everyone at Dartmouth will have a 2300+. I applied with zero expectation just to try my luck, and it worked! Congrats to everyone who was admitted and I wish the best for everyone that was deferred and rejected.

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Started a club at my high school which raises money for a scholarship fund that puts impoverished children into a school in the Beijing area has raised over $6000 to date (Founder/President, 10, 11, 12); NHS Executive Board, in charge of our tutoring program (12); business plan competition which my team placed 2nd in (9, group leader); part of a town-wide committee formed to review the district’s anti-bullying policies and to assemble a new course of action (12); local middle school tutoring (10); shadowed an organic chemist at a local pharmaceutical company (11); piano (1-present); flute (3-10); XC (9); Winter Track (9); School musical (9)
Job/Work Experience: Worked at an organic soap start-up over the summer. I was involved with production, packaging, and keeping inventory (30 hrs/wk). I’ve held onto the job for this Fall (8 hrs/wk).
Volunteer/Community service: Started a middle school tutoring service with 100% of profits going to the scholarship fund previously mentioned (10, 11, 12); put together a benefit concert with the help of 2 club members, with profits going to the scholarship fund (11) raised $3200, and almost 400 people were in attendance; tutor at a local boys and girls club (11, 12); camp counselor/CIT w/ no pay (summer 10, 11)
Summer Activities: Visited an impoverished school in China which became the motivation for starting a club at my high school (summer 9); CTY-Civic Leadership Institute (summer 10), which was a 3 week program about identifying leadership qualities and raising awareness of social inequalities and injustices; Camp counselor/CIT for the past 2 years (summer 10, 11); worked at an organic soap start-up (summer 11)
Essays: My essay was very strong. It was about my experiences starting up a club at my high school that raises money for an impoverished school in China. I discussed my motivation, the hurdles that I overcame, and the successes that we’ve had.
Teacher Recommendation: One was from my AP Chemistry teacher (11), and the other from my British Lit. teacher (11). To quote my chem teacher, “I made you look like a glowing candle.” Must’ve been good, haha. The English one should have been good, but not particularly outstanding.
Counselor Rec: My guidance counselor very much respects me, and I believe he wrote a strong recommendation for me. He wrote about my involvement with the club that I started at my high school.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: My interview went quite well, although it was this past Tuesday (12/7), so I doubt it had any impact on my decision.

Reflection:
Strengths: Extracurriculars, Dartmouth Book award (?), SAT II and AP scores, and GPA.
Weaknesses: While my SAT I scores were not bad, the 690 in CR I think reinforced a trend of not being quite as proficient in English as compared to Math and Science. My only B in high school has been in AP English this Fall semester, so I was a bit worried about how that would look.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The underlying theme for my entire application was my utter devotion to the club I started over 2 years ago. My essay particularly highlighted my experiences with the founding of the club, the recruiting of members, the planning of fundraisers and programs, etc. My SAT I scores were pretty solid, and my GPA puts me in the top 10 (perhaps even 5) or so students in my class, though my school technically does not rank.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Did not apply anywhere else. I was really banking on this, and I’m thankful that now I do not have to prepare another 9 or 10 applications for other schools…

General Comments: SO EXCITED! CANT WAIT TO MEET MY CLASSMATES!

Big envelope came yesterday .

Congratulations comparedtowhat! It is nice to see a female Latino make it with an accept to Dartmouth as I had not seen many or any on CC besides you not sure.

Ironically, you have almost same stats as my D cept the captain of LaCrosse must help compared to my D being on 2 teams for 4 years but never captain-alas…and also your CR score was 730, hers was 690 which another counselor had told me she might retake to get higher but I figured the composite of 2250 on a single sitting would offset it-alas.
Probably helped you also is you managed to get into a couple of APs earlier (or you did I should say). She found it tough getting schedule right for APs by junior year in her school (block scheduling so only 4 classes per semester, one elective and boom) claim to offer 13 but actuallly offer I think 7–like they say they offer AP Latin in their syllabus but its not taught-maybe not enough students take so no way to take not sure. She is taking Calc, Lit, and another I think in spring so maybe if she does well on grades (tests wont be in in time for deferred decision).
So close, frustrating for me (and yet so far for her) as she was deferred but is far from giving up!

Anyway, hope that you love the college and I hope my D eventually succeeds in joining you. Anyway, congratulations and kick butt in Dartmouth!

ten floors.
i’m sorry to hear your admission outcome was not the desired one.
maybe some insight into the recruitment of swimmers at dartmouth would be useful, particularly as half of Dartmouth’s 2015 ED acceptances were reported to be athletic recruits.
how many swimmers are recruited each year? was there an “early read” on your candidacy giving a reasonable assessment of your chances? it’s my understanding that an “early read” of “looks good” is the most favorable assessment. Anything less favorable and the recruited athlete might not be brought along further in the process in terms of applying ED. The implication of being “recruited” is that the coach is going to do their utmost to gain admission for the candidate. Do you feel the swimming coach gave an honest appraisal of your chances?

Good luck in your pursuit of higher education and a collegiate swimming experience

Dancin, you are an example that shows legacies for what they usually are: deserving, regardless. All the c*** you/they get – “oh well, they’re legacy…” is usually undeserved. You clearly would have gotten in on your own merits. Congrats.
