@MichLover Right, but the “bad” letter seems very cold while the other letters seem more personable.

that’s medium. the good one says you’re still in a group that remains under consideration…beyond that, we have everything we need to make a final decision.

I think I got the bad one, it doesn’t seem cold, but the “good” one definitely seems like they really want you.

But both do ask for grades, so…

sorry, i thought only one asked for grades

i got the good one

i hope this means something

But if all the letters supposedly mean the same thing, why would they send out so many different versions?

I know! This makes no sense to me. Do we actually think that UM intended to create variations of deferral letters each with its own “meaning”?

I’m just confused as to why wouldn’t they send one uniform one if they all essentially mean the same thing?

I got:

Dear (name):

We have carefully considered your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for Fall 2013. Given our surging application volume and very strong credentials of our applicants, admission to the University is becoming increasingly competitive. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date.

Your application will be re-evaluated, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this years freshman applicant pool. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early-April, 2013.

Please refer to the website www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred for FAQs about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available and be sure your U-M ID (excluded for privacy) is on the material. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues, and you have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful senior year.

Sincerely,

Theodore L. Spencer
Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director

IT DEPENDS ON WHICH SCHOOL YOU APPLIED TO. engineers, LSA, etc got letters based on the school. THERE IS NO GOOD OR MEDIUM OR BAD LETTER.

I don’t think one sounds more “cold” than the other.

And I’m struggling to find logic in ANYTHING umich is doing lately haha. Why did they defer so many qualified applicants? Why did they send so many different deferral letters? Tbh I doubt there’s a real reason. We just have to accept what happened, send in our grades, plan for the worst but hope for the best! Trying to psychoanalyze everything they’re doing is going to make me go crazyyy

Emshi, no it doesnt. I applied to LSA and got a different letter than you

People trying to analyze it is just a sign that you are doubting yourself. A deferral is a deferral, there is nothing we can do now except send in our grades. At the end of the day you do the best that YOU can without trying to compare yourself to others and putting people down because of the email certain people got.

sooo basically we dont know what these different letters mean? lol well do we even have a chance of getting accepted if our grades are basically straight A’s for senior year??

Does anyone know what proportion of deferred students end up getting accepted, or if it’s on the high or low side?

I’m so glad I’m not alone! Well I’m not happy that we all got deferred but at least someone understands

I was so depressed when I got the e-mail (the “good” one). I am a highly qualified in-state student; I was so confident that I would get in with no problems… I’m just shocked.

I’m still debating sending in a letter of interest along with an additional letter of recommendation. My fall semester grades won’t be ready until the end of January, and I just think that is a long time for them to wait for an update and more time that I’ll have to wait for a final decision. I don’t think it will hurt anything… will it?

@kobudnik Did you only submit the materials they asked for (grades) or did you send a letter of interest or an additional letter of recommendation?

My uncle works for the university of Michigan, I got deferred, and received the “we are impressed with your achievements” letter.

From what I understand, there IS a difference depending on the letter received.

There is a “good,” “medium,” and “bad” letter, although in previous years, applicants have been admitted as well as rejected with all three letters. The rankings are as follows:

“Good” letter: Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan ____ for Fall 2013. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.

“Medium:” We have carefully considered your application to the University of Michigan _____ for Fall 2013. Given our surging application volume and very strong credentials of our applicants, admission to the University is becoming increasingly competitive. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date.

“Bad:” Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2013. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by mid-April.

This may not be true, just the information I’ve gathered from reading several threads, from this year and past years.

I received the “good” letter, 31 act, 8 APs, 1990 SAT, 3.75 unweighted, 4.8 weighted, president of Spanish honor society (I’m Jewish and nonhispanic), vp of service club, good essays, pretty good rec letters, lots of community service, much expressed interest.

Hope this helps. Good luck everyone!

See other thread mollbex. Can you prove there is a difference?

Hey guys, I got deferred too and got the so-called good letter, but I don’t believe there should be any difference between these letters. Actually they are just sent from different email boxes (I got from the one which ADMISSION is spelled incorrectly). Probably it is just for the sake of reducing the workload of their internet servers.
And for your information, almost all the (90% I would say) students from my country got the “good” and apparently Umich is never gonna accept that many students from a foreign country.
