Well Im not saying that they will deffer ALL Houstonians…They will just not accept as many as they really should because they want to guarantee geographic diversity

Someone more informed than I can correct me This is just what I heard from one of their admissions counselors

So an extremely qualified applicant will get deferred just because they are from Houston? To me that sounds very weird, because honestly, if they deferred me because I’m from Houston, Rice would cease to be my number 1 choice. That’s just so against what the college admissions process should be. So they would be losing a very qualified applicant with a very heavy legacy…

We just wanted to wish you all luck in the admissions process! We’re sure you’re all fantastic candidates, and hope you all get in. =]

As crazy as it sounds, this thread is getting me excited too… I really do miss the anticipation of college decisions. By the way, I’m putting my money on Friday :)

The fact that Rice is so popular with Houstonians really comes to show what a truly amazing, hidden gem school Rice is… I believe it is the most underrated school among the top 20 universities. Good luck to y’all (love the South and its colloquialisms)!

I had heard that if a high number of people had applied from a specific school, that could hurt their chances compared with someone that was the only applicant from their school. I don’t know. But we’ll all know very soon.
As my profile says, we’re from California. Again, best of luck to everyone here!

the dean told me that about 25% of Rice’s students are from houston. i dont really think being from houston will hurt you but i do think being from out the state will help you. thats just the way i see it.

… im from Aransas Pass Tx. Small little town on the Gulf Coast… I never thought about it until now… for all of us who are anticipating the results… its really going to suck if we get waitlisted and have to wait longer!

deb123098: Yeah, I’ve been thinking about the whole waitlist/deferred thing too. One nasty note is that Rice merit based scholarships are not open to waitlisters.
I think I’ll check Esther again.

Well last year, many people found out on the 13th or 14th (I think almost all found out the 14th). The people who found out on the 13th found out by checking their financial aid statuses…

Also, how much do you guys think a mother, father, 3 aunts and uncles legacy, and a grandfather who was a tenured professor there for 40 years will help?

westhamunited32: um, you’re basically in my dude haha. Granted, the admissions process is really unpredictable but if you have pretty decent stats, I don’t see how they could turn you down. But seriously…you’re whole family went to Rice! That’s awesome!

Haha yeah im still a qualified applicant. And yeah, i love it, and so did all of them. It was my dad’s stories of all the fun times and lifelong friends he made there that made it my number one :)

ahhhh
so cornell and duke decisions came out earlier this evening!
I’m freaking out…all these really qualified students were not accepted! I just really wish Rice gave out a set time they would be updating ESTHER like all the other schools.
