Official Emory University Transfer Thread Fall '09

Who applied/was already accepted/was already rejected? Thoughts, concerns, chances, stats, etc...

My Emory transfer application was completed last week… when do you think I’ll hear back?

Also, what do you think my chances are, coming from NYU?

SAT - 2250

Fall term: A, A-, B, B
Winter session: A
Spring term: A, A-, B+, B

Thanks!

I’m pretty sure you’ll get in from NYU with those stats. I’m a student at Emory and I know some ppl from NYU that transferred from Emory and they dont have as good as stats as you.

zhangtime, anyway you could give us a little more info on those transfer students you know? what school their from, waht majors, and maybe some stats if you know them?

anyone else applying/heard back?

Has anyone checked their OPUS account lately at SAPROD;

Either they stopped updating the accounts or they managed to lose both my SAT scores and my high school transcript :O. I guess I’ll call them tomorrow and see what’s up.

Hi everyone,

I too applied to Emory for the fall semester and sent in my final grades three and half weeks ago. They still have not updated any information on opus; so could this mean that they sent out the decisions by mail or a letter that tells us we’re complete?

I am also applying to Emory but I am extremely nervous, because I did not realize that SATs are required for transfers! I am going to call them, but I have a somewhat peculiar case, and I just wanted your opinion if I would get accepted… (bear with me please!!)

(I am a 21 year old white female)

HS GPA: 2.9

Although I always liked to learn, throughout high school I got into a lot of trouble: skipped school, suspended numerously, expelled 3 times, lots of legal trouble: name it I did it back then. You can kind of see this from my HS transcripts because I have a whole lot of F’s or either A’s and a couple B’s. The high school I graduated from was a VERY small alternative school, and during my last year I had all A’s and a couple B’s and an A in a dual-enrollment psychology class. Right around the time I was supposed to finish my work to graduate I went to jail for ther sixth time, and had an “epiphany” and decided to change my life. I miraculously got bailed out and was able to graduate on time. (I wrote to Emory explaining I got in a lot of trouble in HS and I changed my life- but I did not give details.)

And I did change my life. I waited a half year to start college (I was on probation in 4 different cities with a warrant in another and had a lot of court cases to settle) but during that time I was working as an assistant teacher/ math tutor at a small christian high school and doing a lot of volunteer- community service.

After 2 years of college, I have over 80 credits and a 3.97 GPA (All A’s except for one B+ for missing a test and not being able to retake it.)

Major: Theoretical Physics (hopefully a double major in Math)

I now speak 6 foreign languages: I am fluent in Italian (and I won a scholarship through an international organization last summer to take an advanced italian class in Florence, Italy) I am pretty much fluent in German and Spanish (finished last class last semester but need to expand on vocab) and I am intermediate in French and at the beginner level in Greek and Russian. I took all these language classes during my two years at college.

EC’s: obviously science, math and foreign language, but also art, dance (salsa, ballroom, belly dance), writing and reading, yoga, classical guitar, (not very sporty but I want to play tennis and sometimes play baseball)

I am a member of the International Honor Society (PTK), the international Dante Alighieri Society (on education and cultural committees, nominated for board), American Physical Society (international physics), local meet-up groups for my langauages, etc.

Lot’s of community service: Went through training to be a camp counselor every summer for a foster children’s camp, I work with homeless people during the winter at various churches in the area, orchestrate and demonstrate dances at a kids vacation bible school during summer (I started it as a favor for one of my friends) and this summer involved in programs to work against drug addiction and mental illness in Detroit.

Also, I just graduated this last semester with an associate degree (summa cum laude) and I won the (most prestigious) honor of “The Most Distinguished Graduate” representing the class of 2009 and had to give a speech.

So what do you think?

you wont need SATs…I will be extremely dissappointed with the Emory admissions staff if they do not accept you. honestly you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

I got in for Summer 2009, but declined the offer. If anyone has questions about how the process works, feel free to ask me.

You are beast.

Are you sure I wouldn’t need the SATs? I figured it would make my app incomplete and they wouldn’t review it. I applied to Duke and had an incomplete because of the SATs and they didn’t accept me, but then again I didn’t have much time with my app, I forgot to add some things and my essays were horrible…

I got an email yesterday saying that I was accepted, but my online account hasn’t updated yet to reflect that. I am coming from a community college in south Florida with a 3.70 GPA and some good extra curriculars.

Good luck to all the other applicants!

hey congratulations.

If you don’t mind me asking, was the decision on opus or through your current school’s email.

Bella, I think it’s a toss-up. There were others with OK high school records, behavioral records that didn’t amount to anything legal and who have nearly impeccable college records and ECs that were promptly denied at every top school they applied to.

I do hope you get in, though. You seem like an incredibly interesting person.

ibanmd, congrats. how long ago did you submit your app and was our everything on your opus account marked as completed?

Okay I am very nervous but I am going to call them - Does anybody know what number and who I should speak with?

Everything has been complete since the beginning of May or so? Maybe even by mid-April I had everything submitted.

The email came through my gmail, which is the email that I used for the commonapp.

I called them and they said my application would be incomplete, but they would still review it. During high school I did take the ACT but because of my lifestyle I previous explained, I got a measley 24. So would it be better for me to have an incomplete or to send them a low score?

I would send the scores as opposed to having an incomplete… standardized scores aren’t as important for transfers anyway. Also, don’t they assume your scores are bad if you don’t send them?
